A Jubilee Year of Mercy11-Day Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

MON, DAY 1: DEPART THE USA: We depart the USA en route to Tel Aviv with complimentary meals and beverages served on board.

TUE, DAY 2: ARRIVE TEL AVIV / CAESAREA / MT. CARMEL / TIBERIAS: Upon our arrival in Tel Aviv, we are met by our Catholic Travel Centre guide who will accompany us throughout our journey. Boarding our pri vate motor-coach we visit Caesar-

ea, the Roman city of Herod where we visit the Crusader fortifications, the Roman aque ducts and amphitheater. We visit the Church of Stella Maris (Our Lady – Star of the

Sea), which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. We continue to our accommodations at the Sea of Galilee in the city of Tiberias. Dinner awaits us at our accom-modations. (D)

WED, DAY 3: TIBERIAS: CANA, NAZARETH & MAGDALA: After a sleepover and a good breakfast, we will travel to Cana, where Jesus performed His first miracle at the request of His mother (John 2:1-11). In Cana we will visit the Franciscan chapel, where Jesus

began His public ministry. We invite couples to renew their wedding vows, followed by some time for lunch on our own.

This afternoon we focus on Nazareth, the site of Joseph and Mary’s home and the town where Jesus played as a child, learned a trade, and grew to manhood. We will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of the An-nunciation and visit other sites of the city. Returning to the Sea of Galilee, we stop in Magdala, to visit the excavation site of the first century synagogue, calling to mind Mary Magda-len, who lived in this area. Dinner will be served at our hotel. (B, D)

THU, DAY 4: TIBERIAS: SEA OF GALILLE SITES: We begin with Mass at the Mt. of Beatitudes, and its stunning panoramic vista of the Sea of Galilee. Then we make our way down the Mount to board our boat

for a brief ride on the Sea of Galilee, recall-ing the various en-counters of Our Lord with His disciples on and around this body of water. We will also have an opportunity to view the ‘Jesus Boat,’ a

recently discovered fishing vessel dating from around the time of Jesus.

We will have our lunch of the traditional Peter’s Fish at Magdala Restaurant, then continue our day’s visit at Capernaum where Jesus began His Galilean ministry. Here we’ll explore the synagogue which dates to the time of Christ and see as well the site of the Apostle Peter’s home. We see the church which has a glass-floor and is constructed over the site, allowing us to peer down into the excavated ruins of Peter’s house.

Next we make our way to Tabgha to visit the Church of the Loaves and the Fishes, commemorat-

ing where Jesus fed the crowd of 5,000. Our last stop of the day is known as “Peter’s Primacy.” Here, after His resur-rection, Jesus met with His disciples and told Peter,

“Feed my lambs; feed my sheep” (John 21:9). We re-turn to our accommodations for dinner. (B, L, D)

FRI, DAY 5: TIBERIAS / MT. TABOR / JERICHO / DEAD SEA / JERUSALEM: Today after breakfast we depart the scene of the early ministry of Jesus in Gal-ilee and head for Jerusalem where He suffered, died and rose from the dead. But first we stop, as he did, on Mount Tabor, the site of the Trans-figuration (Luke 9: 28-36). Our motor coach will park in the parking lot below and we will board taxis and make the winding ascent. The basilica here is an inspiring structure. Here we celebrate Mass.

Then we head down the Jordan Valley to Jericho. After some free time for lunch, we visit the Qasr Al-Yahud baptismal site. A short distance from Jericho, this site holds the oldest and most ancient tradition for being the place of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River (Matthew, 3: 13-17). Back on our motor coach, we stop for a short visit of the Dead Sea (swimming optional – bring your swimsuit). Then we continue on to the Holy City of Jerusalem for check-in, dinner and a leisurely evening. (B, D)

SAT, DAY 6: JERUSALEM: EXCURSION TO EIN KAREM & SHRINE OF THE BOOK: This morning visit we visit the town of Ein Karem, the home of Eliza-beth and Zechariah, parents of John the Baptist, and the site of the Visitation of the pregnant Mary to her

pregnant older cousin (Luke 1:39-56). We visit the Church of John the Baptist and the Church of the Visitation, where we celebrate Mass.

We continue to the Shrine of the Book at the Is-rael Museum where the Dead Sea Scrolls are kept, to learn about their importance in understanding Jewish think-ing and life at the time of Je-sus. Just outside the museum

is a model of first century Jerusalem, which will help us gain an understanding of the old city at the time of Christ. We return to our hotel for the balance of the afternoon at leisure, followed by dinner at a local res-taurant and the evening. (B, D)

SUN, 10, DAY 7: JERUSALEM: EXCURSION TO BETHLEHEM: This morning after breakfast, we travel to Shepherds’ Field where we visit the Shep-herds’ Cave, where we celebrate Mass in the cave. Next we visit Bethlehem, beginning at Manger Square which stands in front of one of the oldest of Christian churches, the Church of the Nativity. Bending low so as to enter through the Door of Humility, we enter the Church and descend into the Grotto of the Nativity. Beneath the Altar, a 14 point-ed Silver Star marks the exact spot sur-rounded by the Latin inscription: HIC DE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary).

We walk the short distance to the Milk Grotto (of-ficially the “Grotto of the Lady Mary”). The Grotto, with a Franciscan chapel built above it, is considered sacred because tradition has it that the Holy Family took refuge here during the Slaughter of the Inno-cents, before their flight into Egypt. Tradition has it that while Mary was nursing Jesus here, a drop of milk fell to the ground, turning it white. We return to our hotel for dinner and the evening. (B, D)

MON, DAY 8: JERUSALEM: MT. ZION & MT. OF OLIVES: We begin at the site where Jesus was led up to the Palace of Caiaphas for His first interrogation by the High Priest. The site is known today as St. Peter in Galicantu (“crowing rooster”). Here we celebrate Mass. Then we make our way to visit the Upper Room, com-memorating the Last Supper and Pentecost. We visit

the nearby Franciscan Chapel of the Cenacle and the Benedictine Church of the Dormition. We will have some time for lunch on our own.

This afternoon our bus takes us to the Mount of Olives, where we begin at the Pater Noster Shrine, commemorating the ‘Our Father’ in languages from around the world. We then walk down the Mount of Olives, stopping first at the beautiful little Church of Dominus Fle-vit (“The Lord wept”), commemorating how Jesus wept over Jerusa-lem prior to His death (Luke 19:41). We come next to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Basilica of the Agony, also known as Church of All Nations. We also take some private time for prayer and reflection in the Garden of Gethsemane. We return to our accom-modations for dinner. (B, D)

TUE, DAY 9: JERUSALEM: HOLY SEPULCHRE & OLD CITY: This morning we begin with the

Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross) in the Old City of Jeru-salem, followed by Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. There is much regarding our salvation history connected with these sites that will be explained to us by our guide. We return to our hotel for a late breakfast and some time to rest.

This afternoon we will visit the Western or Wail-ing Wall of the Temple, and view the Temple Mount, and the Dome of the Rock from the distance and then move to St. Stephen’s Gate and the Church of St. Anne. We will visit the Pool at Bethesda where Jesus healed the paralytic. We then have time to walk in the Holy City and experience the culture of Old Jerusalem at our leisure. Dinner will be served at our hotel. (B, D)

WED, DAY 10: JERUSALEM: PATRIARCH, VISIT OF ABU GOSH – EMMAUS / JAFFA / AIRPORT: This morning we re-quest a meeting with His Beatitude Fouad Twal, the Latin Patri-arch of the Holy Land, to learn more about the experience of the local Christian com-munity (subject to availability). We make our way to Abu Gosh, where we recall the disciples’ post-Resurrection recognition of Christ. Here we celebrate the final Mass of our pilgrim-age. We visit the 12th century Crusader Church, one of the best preserved Crusader remains in the country. Afterward we make our way to Jaffa, where we visit the Church of St. Peter followed by our farewell din-ner at a local restaurant. After dinner we proceed to the Tel Aviv Airport to check-in for our late evening departure. (B, D)

DAY 11: ARRIVE IN THE USA: After breakfast we transfer to Tel Aviv airport to board our flight back home.
