A Level Bridging Work 2020-2021 BTEC Engineering Single (Unit 3)
The tasks below are designed to support you as you prepare to start BTEC Engineering Single (Unit 3).
These tasks have been developed to build on your GCSE knowledge and help with the transition into sixth form, using your time wisely over the coming months to ensure you
maintain a level of education that will be needed to be successful in your subject when you enroll into the sixth form in August/September.
1, Complete the Bracket problem PowerPoint, use the Bracket Assessment PowerPoint to consider the work required based on the mark scheme provided 2, Compete The Design Ideas PowerPoint, this will test your creativity and sketch skills
Question Part 1 - Isometric drawing
Marks AwardedBand 0 Band 1 Band 2 Band 3 Band 4
0-1 marks 2-3 marks 3-4 marks 5-6 marks
Level of response not worthy of credit
The solution shows a simple variation in form and/or approach from the brief. Little sketching quality in isometric, little or no annotation
The solution is feasible but doesn’t represent an improvement from the original product and shows variation in form and/or approach from the brief. Sketching showing improvement in isometric, with some annotation
The solution is an improvement from the original product, showing a clear variation in form and/or approach from the brief. Sketching is reflective of isometric, with appropriate annotation
The solution is optimised, demonstrating a justified variation in form and/or approach from the brief. With good quality isometric sketching and comprehensive annotations
Question Part 2 - Orthographic drawing
Marks AwardedBand 0 Band 1 Band 2 Band 3 Band 4
0-1 marks 2-3 marks 3-4 marks 5-6 marks
Level of response not worthy of credit
three views reflecting plan, front and side views, detail is limited

three views reflecting plan, front and side views. Views are aligned as per engineering expected drawing, includes dimensions and other relevant detail such as tolerancing and hidden line detail
Question Part 3 - Orthographic drawing
Marks AwardedBand 0 Band 1 Band 2 Band 3 Band 4
0-4 marks 5-9 marks 10-14 marks 15-18 marks
Level of response not worthy of credit
Appropriate material/s selected that meet the requirements of the brief. Limited investigation of options.
Appropriate selection of manufacturing process/esthat meet the requirements of the brief. Limited investigation of options.
Material/s selection is appropriate to the brief and partially justified by an investigation that considers limited options.
Selection of manufacturing process/es is appropriate to the brief and partially justified by an investigation that considers limited options.
Material/s selection is appropriate to the brief and mostly justified by an investigation of options.
Selection of manufacturing process/es is appropriate to the brief and mostly justified by an investigation of options.
Material/s selection is appropriate to the brief and fully justified by balanced investigation of options.
Selection of manufacturing process/es is appropriate to the brief and fully justified by balanced investigation of options.

Isometric sketching skills are developing
Isometric sketching skills are well developed
Isometric sketching is well annotated
Isometric sketches have dimensions detailed
Orthographic drawing reflects three views - plan - side - front
Orthographic drawing views are in line
Orthographic drawing has detailed dimensions etc…
A positive material selection, little justification
Identified manufacturing process, little description or justification
Good use of technical language in your written response
Spelling, punctuation and grammar good
EBI
Isometric sketch skills need developing
Isometric sketches need annotating in more detail
Isometric sketches need to include dimensions
Orthographic drawing needs to reflect three views - plan - side - front
Orthographic drawings requires the views to be in line
Orthographic drawing needs to reflect dimensions and tolerances
Material selection needs to be justified
Manufacturing process needs to be described in more detail
Manufacturing process needs to be justified
Develop your use of technical language in your written response
Spelling, punctuation and grammar needs developing
Next steps 'ABC' - Add, Build, Change
Add to your work by improving the responses to the questions using a green penBuild upon your work by developing the answer response to include and access the higher bands in the mark schemeChange the work by correcting elements to ensure accuracy in your response
Design improvement and manufacturing processes
Problem:The road barrier pictured below (fig1) raises and lowers many times a day. The end of the barrier hits a stop when lowered and the stop is failing over time.
Fig 1
Stop, see enlarged sketch of current design (fig2)
Fig 2Bracket NotesCurrently made from Mild steel and is attached to the post using two M12 Cap head screws. The brackets are manufactured in batches of 1000The brackets are not finished with any paint or coating and are subject to corrosion over timeAssume sizes of 100mm x 100mm x 100mm for the bracket, with a thickness of 19mm
Task:1) Redesign the bracket to solve the problem of fracturing and bending over time, sketch your design in isometric and a detailed orthographic sketch.2) Describe in detail the manufacturing process of the newly designed bracket.

Design Ideas – Produce 3 to 4 different design ideas to solve the problem presented.
Problem – Design and detail a drill jig to manufacture using a pillar drill the Strap component, ensure the jig incorporates health and safety elements and a system that allows the component to be made accurately first time and every time
