1 ISSUE | DECEMBER 2018 A LITTLE HISTORY Launched in February 2017, VCQ Project is the world’s most comprehensive CO2 capture and utilization project. Bringing together multiple partners and technologies, it aims to develop and demonstrate commercially viable end-to-end solutions to capture and utilize CO2 in various applications while reducing greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions. Initially, the VCQ Project was projected to operate for three years, ending in March 2019. The Government of Québec extended VCQ’s end date until March 2022 to enable the full realization of the project’s potential. The VCQ Project is located at the Chimie Parachem site in Montreal-East, Quebec. CO2 CAPTURE The VCQ Project uses the same 10 tpd unit CO2 capture unit that was built by CO2 Solutions for its successful 2015 Valleyfield demonstration. It has been operating at the Chimie Parachem site almost continuously, except for planned shutdowns, since August 2017. The CO2 capture unit draws flue gas from a Chimie Parachem natural gas fired boiler located 100 meters away. To protect the CO2 capture unit during the winter, a temporary cover of wood and canvas was built in 2017. It was replaced by a more permanent winterization structure when the VCQ Project was extended until 2022. This new structure designed and built by our general contractor JR Mécanique from Valleyfield, Quebec. CO2 UTILIZATION One of the first utilization technologies to the VCQ Project comes from Pioneer Energy in Denver, Colorado. A LITTLE HISTORY Launched in February 2017, VCQ Project is the world’s most comprehensive CO2 capture and utilization project.

CO2 UTILIZATION

One of the first utilization technologies to the VCQ Project comes from Pioneer Energy in Denver, Colorado. It will be used to convert captured CO2 into methanol in a first stage, followed by dimethyl ether (“DME”). This CO2 utilization unit was designed by Pioneer Energy and built by Pro-B from Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

This 3D drawing offers an overview of the Pioneer

utilization unit.

Work have been on-going this year to prepare the Chimie Parachem site to receive the various CO2 utilization units, including the first one from Pioneer.
