With a career in the industry spanning over 10 years, Gav the Tinker, AKA Gavin Baird, is sure to entertain you tonight at Annie’s Place with his impressive vocals and guitar skills. With a style he described as a mix of folk, infused with Bob Dylan and The Police, Gav said he tended to play music by older artists. ‘‘I do a lot of covers here, like Johnny Cash — I love country music,’’ Gav said. ‘‘I play a bit of a mixture, mainly older stuff, up to about 1978. ‘‘I think song writing, as far as me coming up with new ways of putting words with beats comes from everything. ‘‘The sky, I love the sky. ‘‘People’s lives and trains. ‘‘I don’t know, it’s just the travelling, people get on a train and just go, so I guess travelling too. ‘‘My love of music started when I bought a guitar and started playing in my bedroom — just me and my radiator playing songs together. ‘‘I went to an open mic night and I was so nervous I couldn’t breathe. This one girl said it was a really nice song and from then I knew I wanted to write and sing music for the rest of my life.’’ The self proclaimed rambler has been in Alice Springs for about six weeks, and said prior to coming to the Red Centre he had been travelling the country with his girlfriend, Laine Harkins. ‘‘I’m here with my beautiful girlfriend whom I followed to Australia,’’ he said. ‘‘I was living in Glasgow and she just asked — I came with bells on. ‘‘Alice is great! There seems to be loads of talented musicians.’’ Gav said his stage name, Gav the Tinker, originated from the first band he played in. ‘‘It was a little psychedelic ‘60s band. I thought my name was so boring so I called myself Isaac the Tinker Thomas. ‘‘Tinker is like an old Irish word for someone who is a bit ragged like a hobo who wonders around wearing waistcoats. I was like this and it kind of just stuck.’’ So come to Annie’s Place to- night from 7pm for great live entertainment by Gav the Tinker. He is sure to have you singing along to his music one minute, and in stitches from his witty banter the next. Macumbale spices up act for final show of year ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER Monika O'Hanlon Macumbale composer Carlos Naranjo being creative on the keyboards SIZZLE to salsa as local band Macumbale perform their final show for the year next Friday. Be whisked away by their Colombian Afro-cuban infused sounds, as they transport you from Australia’s Red Centre to a Salsa club in Latin America. The event will be held at the Gapview Hotel, and is the perfect way to celebrate the venue’s recently reno- vated facilities. The eight-piece band will be playing original songs composed by the foun- der of Macumbale and piano player, Columbian-born Carlos Naranjo. Joining the group will be Carlos Mora, a former member of Sydney- based band Son Veneno, who has also collaborated with Naranjo. Erica Riley is the band’s manager, and said they were looking forward to the event. ‘‘This will be the first gig since we’ve been actively putting songs online to listen to,’’ Ms Riley said. ‘‘It’ll be interesting to see how the audience responds, as they’ll know the words. ‘‘Naranjo and Mora are going to re- unite for this show which will be pretty cool. ‘‘It’s our last gig for the year. It’s a pretty big deal for us.’’ The event marks a successful year for Macumbale, who performed vari- ous shows around town including at the Alice Desert Festival. Ms Riley said everyone was welcome, and the performance would be a little different to what the Alice Springs community were used to. ‘‘If you don’t like heavy rock music it’s calm but fun,’’ she said. ‘‘In our community it is really rare, and that should be explored by people here. ‘‘We have hot weather at the mo- ment so you might as well get hot and sweaty dancing salsa.’’ Macumbale were formed after Naranjo moved to Alice Springs from Sydney, where he played with Carlito’s Orchestra, as well as many other well- established jazz and great latin music- ians.
