MESSAGE FROM RABBI BERKMAN
A Lesson in Welcoming – In Spite of COVID
In these mes, when social distancing is the norm, when we keep even our closest friends and family at
arms length, the no on of reaching out to those outside of our social bubbles seems fool hardy at best.
Yet, the Torah commands us, some thirty‐six mes, to welcome the stranger in our midst ki gerim
hayitem b’eretz Mitzraim, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. If you have ever felt what it’s like
to be a stranger in another country or an unfamiliar place or in a strange synagogue, you may also
know the redemp ve power of being on the receiving end of a friendly gesture or invita on. In the
midst of a global pandemic, our family recently had an object lesson in the mitzvah of hachnasat
orachim, welcoming strangers.
This summer we traveled to Israel for our daughter Shira’s wedding. Since last April, Israel has imposed severe travel
restric ons limi ng entry only to those holding Israeli passports or foreigners who wish to be present for births, deaths
and…. weddings of immediate family members. The process of obtaining permission from the consulate is rigorous and me
consuming but a er one month we had obtained wri en permission. Addi onally, anyone coming from outside of Israel
must quaran ne for two weeks upon arrival. We were fortunate to have made arrangements to stay in a beau ful house for
our period of “bidud,” or quaran ne. As I am wri ng this ar cle, we are in day twelve of fourteen. It is isola ng, lonely and
boring at mes but the house is spacious, has a cool breeze blowing through from side to side and overlooks the western
hills of Judah all the way to the costal plains. On a clear day, we can see the Mediterranean on one side and the lights of
Jordan on the other. The narrow girth of this country tells you everything you need to know about maintaining security. A
stonework stairway leads from street level down to the entranceway as the homes here are built onto the hillside.
We are s ll required to stay within the confines of the house and its a ached yard. However, on our first erev Shabbat I
stepped outside and heard sounds of prayer coming from the street. I went up the stairs to find an outdoor neighborhood
minyan mee ng right outside the house. Standing on the top step, I looked out onto the group of par cipants as they
chanted the Kabbalat Shabbat service. One of the men mo oned me to come closer. I stood at the street level, s ll holding
on to the stair railing, and explained that I was in bidud and couldn’t go any further. Following the services, a number of
couples came over to ask if we needed anything while quaran ned. We were asked about the reason for our visit and when
they heard that we had come for a wedding they began to sing and dance in the street. In the days that followed, we were
visited several mes by neighbors bringing dinner, cookies, cake, wine as well as some art supplies to pass the me. The
follow Shabbat, a Kiddush was made at the top of the stairs in honor of the bride who was visi ng with us for the weekend.
To these neighbors, we were complete strangers – worse, we were quaran ned – for fear of COVID! Yet, they did everything
they could to make us feel a li le less isolated, a li le less lonely and a li le less like strangers.
The Rosh Hashana Torah reading picks up where the story of Abraham si ng outside his open tent leaves off. The narra ve
features three strange visitors whose presence prompts Abraham and Sarah to welcome them with food, drink, and the
opportunity to rest. The text is founda onal as the basis for the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim. For Jews, being welcoming is
intrinsic to who we are. From the Hebrew Bible, through the lives of the patriarchs and the matriarchs, to the rabbis of the
Talmud followed by genera ons of Jews living across the globe; welcoming the stranger, opening our tents, being inclusive,
warm, and open is what we do… even during a global pandemic.
As we prepare for a very different High Holidays celebra on this year, let’s remember, especially now, to prac ce the
mitzvah of opening our homes. We may be prevented from invi ng people inside but we are a resourceful people. We can
welcome in many different ways, as the Berkman family learned this summer.
The street where we are staying is named Elonei Mamere, the terebinths of Mamre. It’s a fi ng name for a street with such
kind neighbors as it recalls the very place where Abraham sits outside his open tent, wai ng for visitors, strangers, so that he
can welcome them in.
Wishing you a sweet, healthy and safe new year.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MICHAEL BACKELMAN
As I sit here thinking about what to write in my first Hakol ar cle as President, one word
keeps coming back to me – Community. I know, you’re thinking “Oh no, not another ar cle
about how a community has come together in the face of the COVID pandemic, helping each
other get through these difficult mes!” Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but that is exactly
what I’m going to write about. However, I plan to do so from a viewpoint that maybe you
haven’t yet considered, and in doing so I hope that you will come away with an
understanding of just how lucky we all really are, and what we need to do to make sure that
we remain that way.
You see, I am very aware of how our NCJC community has come together to help one
another. And if you’ve been watching / listening, you’ve seen it too. Our staff has stepped up
big me, transi oning very quickly from in person to online schooling and programming, se ng up helpers to shop and
speak with congregants who are in need, working with our USYers and our B’nei Mitzvah students, maintaining the upkeep
and day to day opera on of our shul, whether inside the building or virtually, and doing a myriad of other things that we may
take for granted. Thank you to Jessica, Lynne, Jackie, Rabbi Berlinger, Beth, Francine, Robert, and all the teachers and
maintenance staff! Our Rabbis have also “upped their game,” running our morning and evening minyanim, as well as
Shabbat and B’nei Mitzvah celebra ons, planning ways to halachachly and meaningfully observe our high holiday rituals both
virtually and in person, and all the while maintaining a personal connec on with our congregants and performing their
pastoral du es (o en at personal risk of illness). Thank you Rabbis Berkman and Graber! Our Board of Trustee members and
their commi ees have also been working diligently to maintain our programs and services, as well as taking on the addi onal
responsibility of calling each of our congregants just to stay in touch. Thank you Board members! And finally, our
congregants have stepped up as well, paying for High Holiday seats that they know will go unused this year, and selflessly
dona ng to our “Stay and Pray at Home” fund, helping to secure the financial stability of our congrega on. Thank you to all
of you!
So far, everything I’ve said may sound like something you could hear from many other synagogue communi es throughout
the country, and hopefully it does. But what we really need to stop and consider is this – how did it happen? You see, while
our NCJC community has been there for us since the pandemic began in February / March, it didn’t start then. It’s been there
for over 60 years! It started back in the 1950s, when our founding members along with Rabbi Sosland z’l established the New
City Jewish Center. And it has con nued to grow throughout all of these past decades due to the contribu ons, both
financially and in terms of me, of all of our congregants. None of whom foresaw a global health pandemic! The point is, we
have been able to celebrate our simchas together, mourn our losses together, and live in a community that cares for and
helps each other (even through a global pandemic) because of what others before us did to build our community. I think we
owe it to future genera ons to make sure that they have the same NCJC community available to support them that we had
for us.
And so it is my hope as we celebrate the new year that we will commit ourselves to our community, to support it financially,
to support it with our me and effort, and to be there for one another, G‐d willing without the need for a pandemic to make
us realize how important we are to each other.
I wish you all a sweet, happy, and HEALTHY new year.
Shana tova u’metukah!

HEBREW SCHOOL NEWS: RABBI ALLISON BERLINGER
About 9 months before I came to work at NCJC, I experienced a tremendous loss. My father died suddenly. My father
and I were very close. He was my confidant, my advisor, my protector and my daddy. I will never forget that morning,
the call from my mother, her voice, her words, the swi ness with which I moved.
I arrived at my parent’s home twenty minutes later, my mother was already on the phone with the funeral home mak‐
ing arrangements. It was the Monday before Thanksgiving. My parent’s rabbi was in Belarus Russia. There were ar‐
rangements to be made. The funeral would be Tuesday.
My parents have been ac ve and dedicated members of their Shul forever. I can’t even remember a me that they
were not involved. Their synagogue community is small. My father was the Kohein. He was there every Shabbat morn‐
ing and holiday for the Aliyah. He was also known in the shul as the person who greeted everyone and was sure that
every person who came for services felt welcome.
My father’s funeral was packed and as we sat shiva for 7 days, I can tell you that even on Thanksgiving, we had a min‐
yan. The community was there for us in our deepest grief, even sending Thanksgiving dinner for the meal that night.
Yes, we cried through that worst Thanksgiving, but we felt cared for.
My friends commented how amazing my mother’s friends and community are and I responded yes, this is what being
part of a shul is. The community has con nued to care for my mother beyond the hardest of those first days and
weeks.
When it was me for me to recite Yizkor for the first me for my father, Barbara Federman put her arms around me
and said: “you shouldn’t be alone, it’s your first me” and she held me as I wept. I will never forget that kindness. It is
what community is built on. I had found my community.
As I listen to the many conversa ons about reopening schools, and whether Hebrew School learning should be in person
or virtual, I want to respond to the popula on of people who feel that if Hebrew school is virtual, they will take a year
off or they will go and create their own experience.
I have learned many valuable lessons from losing my father so suddenly. Two of those lessons are:
1. Community will be there for you if you are there for the community
2. The strength of Judaism — its power — is not wedded to a building
If we want the community to be there for us in our mes of need, maybe we need to be there for the community when
it needs us.
My father died right before Thanksgiving, it was not a convenient me but it is when it happened. There were people
who changed their flights or cancelled their plans to be with us. They were not all related to us and they were part of
our community because we were in shock, we were hur ng and we were lost. That is what you do when you are part of
a community. You step up‐you don’t step away.

To Rabbi Berkman, Rabbi Graber, and the wonderful congrega on of NCJC:
I hope this email finds you all well and making it through COVID in good humor and good health. On my
end, I was lucky enough to have a spectacular winter wedding and honeymoon in South East Asia,
making it back to a new Manha an apartment right before the world turned upside down. Since
March, my husband and I have enjoyed spli ng our me between Manha an and my childhood home
in Rockleigh, NJ, with my parents, and we are all doing well and in good spirits.
I am thrilled to share that star ng this August, I will be joining Congrega on B’nai Sholom Beth David in
Nassau County as their new Cantor, where I’ll be sharing the pulpit with Rabbi David Lerner.
I will always have a special place in my heart for NCJC, and you, each of the congregants I’ve go en to
know. Thank you so much for being such a rich and important part of my life. I will always cherish the
memories and will look forward to visi ng.
I would love to hear from you and to keep in touch. Please find my contact informa on below.
(Website coming soon)!
Wishing you all the very best,
Cantor Xan Weiser, formally Cantor Xan Weinstein!

Social Ac on
My name is Bonnie Winograd and I’m the new social ac on chair.
On August 16 we held a Blood Drive at NCJC. This was the first drive NCJC had held since last year (our previous ones
being canceled due to COVID) We had 50 people sign up to give blood and 38 people donated whole blood Units and 2
donated red blood cell units. This means that our blood drive will be able to help 118 people as a result. I want to thank
Sandy Cohen our blood chair and Fran Satran for all their help making phones calls to previous donors. Also Lara
Epstein and our Youth Commi ee for ge ng the word out via social media.
And a special thanks to Fran and Mike Satran for helping all day at the blood drive as well as Molly Winograd. And of
course Robert and his staff for keeping the building clean so people felt comfortable being in the building.
You may ask so what’s next on the agenda? Rockland Jewish Family Services is collec ng school supplies. This is an easy
way to help our community that takes li le effort on our part but can make a big difference I’ve a ached the info
below:
Rockland School Supplies Drive
We are suppor ng Rockland Jewish Family Service's collec on to help make the first day of school a success for local
families in need. In the interest of keeping everyone safe, RJFS requests that people make financial dona ons online
this year instead of bringing materials into the office. Use the RJFS online form to donate any amount you can to its
School Supplies Drive; RJFS will order the supplies students need most. Suggested dona ons range from $10 to $36.
For more informa on, go to rjfs.org/back‐to‐school‐drive or call (845) 354‐2121, ext. 140.
Rockland is very lucky to have a Kosher food Pantry. And at this me the need is even greater than ever. NCJC has been
asked to provide Kosher Pasta. If you are shopping and can purchase a box or two they can be dropped off at the
synagogue. We will be se ng up a bin just inside the door so you do not even need to enter the building.
If you are willing to help with any upcoming events or have sugges ons (you can help as much as you feel comfortable
and even from home) please feel free to call me or email me.

Any other September, I would be wri ng about how excited we are to start school again. Any
other September, I would be le ng you know about all the special programming and events
that we are planning. Any other September, I would be telling you about what a fun summer
we had in camp. But, unfortunately, this is not any other September – it is September 2020.
And while we are looking forward to re‐opening school and seeing all of our li le students
again, the stress and anxiety of that re‐opening is also weighing very heavily on us.
I have spent all summer on webinars and zoom mee ngs with the state, OCFS, Child Care Council of Rockland, The
Jewish Educa on Project, and numerous and sundry other organiza ons, making sure that NCJC ECC is in compliance
with all current mandates and protocols that need to be in place in order to open school as planned. Addi onally, we
have to take into account all suggested prac ces as well. It is an arduous, daun ng task, but with the help of Jessica
and Robert, and my right hand, Beth Dinowitz, we are at a place where we feel reasonably confident that our opening
will be safe while s ll being able to run a vibrant, happy program for our children. It won’t look exactly like it usually
does, but we hope the results will be just as wonderful.
So, we have the teachers star ng on Sept. 1, the children on the 8th. We will have zoom and in‐person visits with our
families beforehand, and much of our class me will be outside as long as the weather holds. We are prepared to flip
to virtual learning if it becomes necessary, but we are planning in‐person classes as usual. We are working with a
psychologist on the best ways to ease our children back into the social environment of school, a er being home with
their parents for 6 months. The teachers have been told what will be expected of them, besides their usual teaching
du es, and the maintenance crew will be cleaning and disinfec ng throughout the day. We are as ready as we can be
in an environment that can change in an instant.
This Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, let’s all put a li le more into our prayers – a li le more thought, a li le more
intensity, a li le more soul – that this New Year really and truly brings a new beginning filled with health and peace.
Shana Tova U’metukah – a sweet and good New Year.

CHESED CALLERS
What does it mean to be a part of a “caring community” and how can we create this type of community within our synagogue? In responding to these ques ons, the Gemilut Chesed Commi ee is pleased to be launching a new response team called the “Chesed Callers”. Our Chesed Callers are a group of people who make phone calls with compassion and love for those members of our congrega on who could use a li le kindness.
If you, yourself, would benefit from the helping hands of our team, or know someone else who would, please be in touch with us! We thank you, in advance, for the opportunity to do such an important mitzvah!!

CEMETERY PLOTS AVAILABLE THROUGH NCJC
“It is an ancient Jewish custom to purchase a gravesite during one’s life me and to own it outright prior to burial. The Bible states explicitly that Abraham brought a grave for Sarah. Likewise, Joseph was buried in the family plot that his father Jacob had acquired in the city of Shechem”. (from the Jewish Way in Death and Mourning by Maurice Lamm)
Have you put off arranging your final res ng place because you just don’t want to deal with the details? Allow us to assist you making this an easy process with minimal hassle. New City Jewish Center currently has numerous plots avail‐able for purchase at Gates of Zion Cemetery located at 670 Saddle River Road in Monsey. Addi onally, in comparison to other area cemeteries the cost is more reasonable and the check is made payable to NCJC.
For further details or to make an appointment to schedule a personal tour of available plots please call our cemetery chairperson Jay Shaffer at 845‐634‐5697.

MEN’S CLUB
It is a New Year and a new beginning. This new beginning gives us hope that be er things are ahead. Times where
families can see one another, Grandparents can be with grandchildren, and friends can congregate once again.
While we may not all be able to come together in person this High Holiday Season, we encourage everyone to use the
resources they have to par cipate safely. If you do not feel safe coming to Synagogue in person please join us virtually
in prayer on Zoom.
We would like to thank those who par cipated in the Virtual Tour of Israel. It was an interes ng and informa ve virtual
trip. We are looking for addi onal programming this year, so please send us your ideas and we would be happy to help
support them. Some poten al events we are looking at are ge ng someone to speak to us about the Tree of Life
Synagogue and what has been done since that fateful day, and how they are dealing with Covid, a Ne lix Party, Virtual
Casino night, etc. We will also be running our football pools so good luck to those who enter.
Our goal this year is to make sure we try to resemble our current lives with those a year ago. Please let us know if there
is anything, we can do to provide support during this me.

This has been an extremely challenging me for many and we want to offer thoughts and
prayers to all who have been impacted by Covid‐19.
