a low cost power-quality meter with series fault detection capability
DESCRIPTION
IEEE paper slide on A Low-Cost Power-Quality Meter With Series Arc-Fault Detection Capability for Smart GridTRANSCRIPT
Smart metering has been seen as an essential part of the vision of smart grids .
Concerns about power quality (PQ) is growing due to the appearance of new components, which are sensitive to various powersupply disturbances like harmonic distortions, voltage drop, voltage spikes, arc faults etc.
Low cost
Detect and log PQ related problems
Arc fault detection capability
Helps monitor voltage/current peak and rms values, THD, etc.
Arc faults normally take place due to wiring problems and is one of the main reasons for home fires. Two types:
SERIES ARC FAULT
o PARALLEL ARC FAULT
Using Mayer’s Arc Model, we get
o Using the equations, a MATLAB simulink model for series arc fault is created.
The following parameters were used in the simulation:
α=2.9e-5, Ip=25A,Lp=2 mm, uc=25Lp.
System voltage is 120v/60Hz,RL=5ohms,Rs=1ohms,
arc start time=0.03s
SERIES ARC FAULT SIMULATION RESULTS
The wavelet transform is used to analyse the signal and hence extracting the local signal disturbances.
Daubechies Wavelets allows extracting local signal disturbances with very high quality.
A system was designed and developed that is capable of measuring single-phase PQ related parameters and series arc-fault conditions .The system is built around a low-cost microcontroller with DSP capabilities and can be easily extended by adding features in firmware. It could be directly applied to smart grid due to its low-cost, wireless, and logging capabilities.
