Good morning to you all

Today, the day that the work of the XXII International Meeting of Young Scientists from UNESCO Associated Schools begins, under the theme: “The fight against desertification - the great challenge for young people”, allows me to confess the pride I feel for the quality work that Escola Secundária de Sá da Bandeira has been developing over the years, promoting the discussion and consequent awareness of such relevant updated pressing issues.

This year, the work focuses again on an urgent problem - desertification - which we urgently need to reflect on, with the awareness that the problems facing the contemporary world must be the object of awareness, intervention and of everyone's commitment.

Considering that desertification results from climate change and human activity, we must all face the problem, aware that the degradation of the soil and the terrestrial bio-productive system inevitably lead to a decrease in the quality of life, to depopulation and, ultimately, it questions the survival of man. I recall that, currently, desertification threatens the income of more than a billion people in about 100 countries. It is seriously compromising 44% of the cultivation systems in the world - facts with disastrous repercussions, within the scope of the world economy.

Therefore, in addition to the application of fighting measures that prevent the advance of desertification, it is also necessary that we rethink our relationship with nature, training ourselves for the importance of a natural heritage that is collective responsibility and requires the commitment of all.

I would like to remind you of the importance of strengthening research and training, transferring, and disseminating knowledge, investing in innovative solutions, generating the so desirable sustainability.

As far as innovation is concerned, I mention, for illustrative purposes only, the contribution of information systems, digital tools and mobile applications for this fight to be successful and reach the goals, allowing, for example, to identify and diagnose situations of stress in the cork oak (which I mention, as it is a protected tree, which was considered the national tree of Portugal), thus monitoring the vitality of the tree.

Thus, using new digital tools, useful information is generated, providing specific management recommendations, and promoting more effective intervention, capable of reversing undesirable situations. (Regarding the cork oak, I recall that in one of the recent meetings, a cork oak was planted in our school).

Considering, therefore, the magnitude of this relevant problem, I would like to thank, gratefully to all the participating schools, which are up to participate in this Meeting with the ideas and proposals that the current world needs.

I wish you all a prolific work and a pleasant stay in the Scalabitan lands.

Santarém, 8 de janeiro de 2020

Bom dia a todos,

Agradecemos o convite formulado para participarmos na sessão de abertura do XXII Encontro Internacional dos

Jovens Cientistas das Escolas Associadas da UNESCO, e muito saudamos os professores e alunos dos países aqui

presentes.

Felicitamos especialmente a ESSB pela coorganização deste XXII Encontro bem assim a temática associada “A

luta contra a desertificação: o grande desafio para os jovens?”. Não esquecendo também todos os parceiros

que se nos apoiaram.

Falamos especialmente da Agenda 2030 dos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e do ODS 15 —

Proteger a Vida Terrestre.

Dia 17 de junho a UNESCO celebra o Dia Mundial de Combate á Desertificação e á Seca e, em 2019, o tema

foi - “Juntos, cultivemos o futuro”. Esta celebração tem como objetivo sensibilizar o público para os

esforços internacionais desenvolvidos com vista à neutralização da degradação dos solos, graças às

ferramentas de cooperação científica, à resolução de problemas e ao forte envolvimento das comunidades

no terreno. A UNESCO tem estado na vanguarda deste esforço coletivo apoiando-se nos seus programas

científicos e promovendo programas relativos á água e ao ambiente.

Trabalhar juntos é fundamental, o progresso só pode ser alcançado no combate à seca e à desertificação com a

participação de todos os agentes: autoridades públicas, agentes do setor privado, cientistas, associações e

comunidades locais, especialmente as escolas e os jovens. Afinal, não esqueçamos que atualmente, a

desertificação afeta mais de 165 países em todo o mundo.

Não me alongando muito mais, queria terminar esta breve exposição sem uma vez mais agradecer o apoio de

todas as pessoas e instituições que tornaram possível mais este Encontro. Fazemos votos de uma jornada feliz.

(J) We learned what desertification was and saw how it impacted different parts of

the world. Many people do not understand what desertification is, but nonetheless

is important and needs to be addressed. (AF) Desertification is the process of fertile

land becoming dirt. This is caused by many factors, but mainly overpopulation, over

irrigation, deforestation, agriculture, and misuse of natural resources. (B) Every

part of the world is impacted by desertification, but central Asia has the greatest

impact. During our discussion, we heard research from different countries that face

this problem, and the solutions they came up with. (M) To combat deforestation

and climate change, planting trees and reducing carbon dioxide are simple ways to

solve this, since it creates life and absorbs gases from the atmosphere. (AP)

Furthermore, in the We Are Running out of Time presentation, they talked about

reusing rainwater to wash personal items and irrigating a garden as an easy way to

make a difference. (V) Here are a few ways to face the effects of desertification

around the world. Spreading awareness and creating a domino effect (more people

involved, the bigger the impact) towards this global issue is the best way to combat

this problem, as seen in the discussion.

• The causes of desertification are mainly caused by human activity. Deforestation, deforestation, overgrazing, forest fires, climate change, poor farming practices, and poverty.

• The consequences of desertification are poverty, loss of resources, economic repercussions, political instability, famine, and loss of biodiversity

• Places that are being directly affected by desertification include the Gobi Desert, Portugal, Spain, and Australia. Up to 30% of land globally is affected by desertification

• Educating our communities is an important part of the fight against desertification. By educating the younger generations, they will be able to grow up with the knowledge and information to continue working to find solutions.

• Some solutions include greenhouses to create optimal conditions for plants to combat desertification. Other ideas include forms of conservation of water to keep the soil hydrated and fertile. Reform agricultural practices to maintain the health of the land and avoid damaging irrigation systems. Working collectively as a community is the basis of all these solutions, for any of them to be truly effective, everyone must be working together.

We learned more about what desertification was through other presentations’, such as its causes, consequences, and socioeconomic effects. We learned that climate change is related to desertification through presentations shown, and how it influences our planet. As humans, we accelerated the process of climate change, therefore, causing desertification to speed up. It is our responsibility to find solutions to this problem. For example, the “Hydroponics: Sensible use of water”, the “SMART Green House”, and the “Desertification: a great silent threat for our planet” presentations showed us direct solutions and preventions to take in order to combat desertification. We learned that we could minimize the usage of harmful materials or everyday products that can damage our ecosystem, such as the “Desertificalgae” project, where they suggested replacing chemical fertilizers with algae. During our discussion, we pointed out that each of the presentations touched upon some ways to prevent desertification, and everyone had a different point of view depending on where they came from. Overall, seeing everyone’s presentations as well as creating ours allowed us to realize the real dimension of this issue.

Ways to deal with desertification without government intervention 1. Education Lots of people don´t know about desertification Young kids will grow up to create better government, start at beginning The issue with this is that it takes too long Also educate older people (human resources, TV, media) 2. Finding new forms of energy and agriculture Intersection of profitability and sustainability - Coal will become too expensive soon, companies should learn to make the switch now - Another example is going back to glass bottles so that companies don´t have to pay for packaging and less waste will be created - Sustainable agricultural practices will be profitable because selling food makes money - Making it clear that the consumers of products want them to be sustainable - Food prices higher w desertification because if an individual pollutes, farmable land will decrease, and food prices will increases Spreading ideas beyond this conference - Celebrities - Media - Innovation from young scientists like us!

Monsaraz a graceful medieval village one of the oldest in Portugal maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. Made of lime and schist, this place whispers us, between the echo of our footsteps in its streets. Its privileged location on the top of the hill with a magnificient view over the river Guadiana and the frontier with Spain.

We are going to visit the Roman Temple, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Igreja (church) de São Francisco and the Chapel of Bones, the Colégio do Espírito Santo, now part of Évora University and Praça do Giraldo (the main square).
