Purpose and Promise: The purpose of the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) is to enhance and empower the lives of all Arkansans by offering lifelong learning opportunities through high-quality educational programming and services. The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) fulfills its purpose

by providing: educational resources to schools and all educators; innovative and high-quality public media programming and services that illuminate the culture

and heritage of Arkansas and the world; and opportunities to engage and explore new ideas. This relevant AETN content will expand the minds of children, inform

Arkansans about public affairs and current events in our state, highlight arts and culture, and invite Arkansans to explore the outdoors and the world around them.

Dear Friend and AETN Foundation Member,

Each year in our commitment to be fiscally transparent and share with our viewers, members and donors how we work to benefit Arkansas and its citizens, we release an annual report.

A large part of the annual report falls to AETN’s chief financial officer – a position I accepted in January after 15 years of service to the network and following the retirement of our previ-ous CFO. The CFO is responsible for ensuring the investment made by the citizens of Arkansas in AETN is used in their best interest.

While an annual report may just seem like a lot of numbers, we also like to include an overview of how all those numbers worked for AETN by recapping key outreach and educa-tion efforts, original productions and fundraising successes.

Education is crucial to the improve-ment of Arkansans’ lives and is at the center of everything that we do here. AETN provides lifelong learning opportunities to every citizen of the state – services that are necessary and depended upon in rural and urban areas alike.

I am very fortunate to have worked in AETN’s finance and administration division for 15 years. We have a great group of people working at AETN, and I will use my experience to help them – and our viewers, members and donors – any way I can.

I am grateful to be able to serve the state in this new capacity and will work to maintain AETN’s excellent record of due diligence and steward-ship to the citizens of Arkansas.

Sandra Sherman, CPA, CGFMAETN Director Finance & Administration

Sandra, a native of Cabot, is a graduate of Conway High School and received her BBA in account-ing from the University of Central Arkansas. She has more than 20 years of experience as a financial controller and is a certified public accountant and certified govern-

AETN Productions

AETN supports independent productions

Arkansas is the Natural State, and this month AETN showcases the natural talent of some Arkansas filmmakers with the first statewide broadcast of four home grown productions.

“Mineral Explorers”

“Mineral Explorers” is an unscripted reality series packed with adventure, travel, education and the world’s fin-est gems, crystals and minerals. Join Thomas Nagin and his team as they travel to some of the richest and most remote mines on earth, such as Bolivia in this episode. Digging, dynamite, danger – it’s all in a day’s work, as Nagin demonstrates just what it takes to un-earth these natural wonders. Produced by Thomas Nagin.

“Unearthing the Dream”Years ago, the African-American com-

munity in Malvern was forced to accept secondhand materials for its schools. But, it refused to accept a second-class education for its children, giving rise to a black high school that cultivated suc-cess and pride. In 1968, desegregation closed the doors to this school forever. Today, its role in this town is just begin-ning. “Unearthing the Dream” follows the journey of A.A. Wilson High School as former students talk about its importance to the community and the new road to its remodeling. Produced by Pam Uzzell.

“Home at Last: Hmong People in the Ozarks”“Home at Last: Hmong People in the Ozarks” is an extraordinary journey for this remarkable group of people – from a subsistence farming culture in the highlands of Laos after the Vietnam War to refugee camps in Thailand, as refugees to the US, and finally to the Ozark Mountains of the 21st century. After a short historical look at the background of the Hmong, the film explores why the Hmong came to the Ozarks, what their life is like now, what their contributions to the area have been, and what challenges they face. The film includes a glimpse of the loss of their unique culture as the younger generation assimilates into American life. Produced by Judy Luna.

‘The Island President’

featured in April Community Cinema

screenings

President Mohamed Nasheed is trying to prevent 385,000 people from drowning. His nation of 1,200 low-lying islands, the Maldives, is sinking into the Indian Ocean as sea levels rise due to global warm-ing. Climate change experts say that some of the islands will be submerged within 20 years, threatening the lives of the largely im-poverished inhabitants, as well as inundating the lavish resorts that dot the islands. Nasheed’s unprecedented contin-gency plan is to move his entire population to a new homeland.

Community Cinema, a free monthly screening series engaging communities through films produced

by the Independent Television Service (ITVS), features monthly screenings fol-

lowed by panel discussions with leading organizations, local communities and

special guest speakers. The program is designed to help people learn about and get involved in the social issues raised in the documentaries.

Join AETN and community partners in Central and Northwest Ar-

kansas for a free, advance screening of “The

When severe weather affects Ar-kansas, it is AETN station policy to broadcast tornado and flash flood information statewide from the Little Rock National Weather Service office.

Although emergency notices are broadcast on AETN, the process is completely automated. AETN has no control over the broadcast time or length of the alerts. Weather alerts come directly from the National Weather Service in Little Rock, and are not initiated or modified by AETN.

Emergency Alert System (EAS) alert tones must be broadcast to notify other stations monitoring AETN for EAS information. While EAS messag-es can disrupt the viewing experience, emergency messages are always of a duration of two minutes or less.

This is an important service that AETN provides to the state, and we appreciate your patience and under-standing as we work to keep Arkan-sans safe during severe weather.

The AETN Foundation exists to raise the funds necessary to support AETNís mission of enhancing lives through trusted public television programs and educational services, offering opportunities for involvement through volunteering and financial gifts.

As we do every year, you will find AETN’s annual report in this edition -- our direct message to you, our loyal base, about how we value and use your support both financially and in public service to communities throughout Arkansas.

Because you care about public television in Arkansas, AETN was able to produce several local programs that help parents get the tools they need to get their child to graduation; inform you about candidates and ballot initiatives so you can make an educated choice during elections; and bring you arts and culture programs you can’t find anywhere else on Arkansas television.

You made it possible for “Downton Abbey” to come to Arkansas and become one of PBSís most successful programs in history. You were entertained by several AETN-supported concerts such as Celtic Thunder. You supported our public service initiatives such as Read Across America Day so AETN could reach out to schools in south Arkansas and throughout the state who need a little extra support and attention; our education initiatives offering free professional development to more than 35,000 Arkansas teachers; and helped us grow into the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock to bring our award-winning childrenís programs and educational resources for visitors.

We look forward to sustaining our public service promise for years to come – and offering you the best of public media in Arkansas.

Sincerely,

Allen Weatherly Executive Director, AETN

“Kind Hearted Woman”Airs in two parts, Monday, April 1, and Tues-day April 2, at 8 each night.

In a special two-part series, acclaimed film-maker David Sutherland (“The Farmer’s Wife,” “Country Boys”) creates an unforgetta-ble portrait of Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation. “Kind Hearted Woman” is a special co-presentation of “FRONTLINE” and “Independent Lens.” “Syria Behind the Lines”Airs Tuesday, April 9, at 9 p.m.In the rural heartland of Syria’s countryside, the bloody uprising against President Bashar

Al Assad has taken a terrifying turn. In this highly charged documentary, award-winning filmmaker Olly Lambert lives on both sides of Syria’s sectarian frontline, witnessing the devastating effect of a religious feud that, re-gardless of the outcome of the war, is shaping Syria’s future.

“The Retirement Gamble”Airs Tuesday, April 23, at 9 p.m. Ten trillion dollars in Americans’ retirement savings are invested in large and small ac-counts managed by banks, brokerages, mutual funds and insurance companies. But, whether your IRA or 401K will assure a safe retirement is largely a gamble. Building off reporting from the groundbreaking special “Money, Power and Wall Street,” “FRONTLINE” raises troubling questions about how America’s financial institutions protect our savings.

“Never Forget to Lie”Airs Tuesday, April 30, at 9 p.m.In his latest film, Marian Marzynski (“Return to Poland,” “Shtetl”) returns to the Warsaw ghetto of his childhood. In “Never Forget to Lie,” Marzynski tells the extraordinary story of how he as a Jewish boy escaped the Holocaust, hiding from the Nazis, and surviving the war as an altar boy in a Catholic monastery. In a deeply moving and personal film, he shares the poignant, painful recollections of other child survivors, many of whom are visiting scenes of their childhood for the last time.

“Growing Hope: The Resurrection of Arkansas Baptist”“Growing Hope” is a documentary film about the resurrection of a school and neighborhood in what was once known as the “war zone” in Little Rock. The dy-namic leader and president of Arkansas Baptist College, former football coach Dr. Fitz Hill, has taken a broken down, bankrupt school and turned it around to become a shining example of what can happen when faith and determina-tion trump depression and degrada-tion. Produced by Larry Foley and Jim Borden.

For more information on how to get independent films broadcast on AETN, contact Carole Adornetto, AETN Director of Production, at [email protected].

“El Latino”AETN is proud to announce that “El Latino” will now be presented with the addition of English subtitles. Join host Michel Liedermann and guests as they share valuable information concerning Arkansas’s fastest growing minority population. The program content promises to inform, educate and enlighten all viewers, English and Spanish speaking alike.

Loupe AETN is shining a light on the Arts in Arkansas through Loupe – an interactive website paired with a series of broadcasts of arts programs. The objective of this initiative is to increase

visibility of Arkansas arts, arts organiza-tions and artists around the state. The website features articles written by art-ists, about artists, and video segments, among other things.

“Cooking on the Wild Side”

The fun and food keep on coming in this month’s “Cooking on the Wild Side.” John Philpot and Phyllis Speer are warming up with her Aunt Fern’s simple and tasty venison taco soup. Speer is also cooking one of her favorite wild game recipes, a delicious wild turkey thigh and pepper casserole. The pair finish by enjoying a uniquely Ozark dish, Ozark fricassee. “Cooking on the Wild Side” airs Tuesday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m.

towards our goal of adding 750 new Sustain-

ing Members by the end of our fiscal year, June

30, 2013. And we are so pleased to say, Thank You!

More than 550 new Sustain-ing Members since December

means that we have already acheived 75% of our goal.

Thank you to all of you who have joined us as new members

in the Sustainer program and all of you that have switched your regular

membership over. Your generous gifts make such a difference.
