Tiziano(Titan) Vecellio-(1485-1576)Born in Pieve di Cadore, Italy Titian is considered one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. In his teens, Titian became an apprentice to the Venetian artist Sebastiano Zuccato and soon went to work with leading artists Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione. Giorgione was especially influential to the young painter. He was asked by the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso d’Este to paint some mythological paintings for him ,Worship of Venus, Bacchus and Ariadne, and The Bacchanal of the Andrians. Most art during this time was religious so this move into pagan subjects was relatively new and not popularized. The brightness of the figures is because of the oil paint which was a innovative technique. Titian married Cecilia and gave birth to his sons Pomponio, Orazio and daughter Lavinia, but Cecilia died giving birth to Lavinia. The two sons eventually became assistants to Titian. Titian was hired as a court painter for Charles V of the Holy Roman Emperor and awarded the title Count Palatine and knight of the Golden Spur by the Emperor. To thank Charles for the job he gave Charles V a self portrait of him-self, which Charles cherished very much. The Golden Spur is given out to people who have contributed to the glory of the Catholic Church. Titian died on August 27, 1576 in Venice. He died of the plague.Titan loved to paint mythology and always made the audience feel like they were seeing the scene in person like in Artemis and Actaeon where Actaeon sees the goddess in the nude and one can see by the anger in the goddess face she is going to punish him. So the audience should be technically punished too because they see the goddess naked.
