Hassan Naeem

GHAZALS

Translated from the Urdu by Kalimur Rahman and John 0, Perry

In our ranks knowledge, courage and time*; It cannot be that truth will be defeated.

All hopes dashed to nothingness, to whom shall I show these? ^^ Everyone tells me his own long tale of woe.

%JPP/ Courage flows as the blood in the veins of my verse; Q&iwL My poems are soldiers carrying fire in their hands. mm ^£*v Not with the moon only, with the burning sun my madness makes

friends, Though it is true, 0 Hassan Naeem, right now the sun is merciless,

merciless.

The first translator notes that these lines are "more like speech delivered from a platform than a rjhazal."

From: Asri adcb (Contemporary Literature) (Winter 1976).
