It is a pleasure to bring to you another edition of the City of Belmont Business Talk.

The City recently launched the BeCrimeFREE.com.au website to stakeholders to assist our residents and the business community to keep the City safe and secure.

The website consolidates all the available Community Safety and Crime Prevention services including BeCrimeALERT, Alarm Assist, free security appraisals and property marking kits, City of Belmont Community Watch, Neighbourhood Watch and the graffiti removal service. BeCrimeALERT is a fantastic tool which alerts local residents and businesses with any activity and provides useful tips.

Nominations for the 2014 City of Belmont Business Environmental Awards have opened to local businesses who demonstrate achievements in environmental or sustainability areas such as water, energy, waste, biodiversity and transport.

If your business is excelling in one of these areas, I encourage you to nominate your organisation – you never know, your organisation could be the winner of one of the four $1,000 cash prizes!

Cr. Phil Marks, Mayor

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

MIXED BUSINESS TRANSPORT SURVEYA survey of companies in the Belmont Mixed Business Zone was conducted in February 2014 to gather information on travel patterns and services that workers would like to access during their work day. The City is now using the results of this survey to advocate for improved public transport services in the area.

Many businesses voiced concerns regarding inadequate public transport services and resulting issues with cars parking on the street. Respondents identified

that they desired easier access to banks, supermarkets, restaurants, retail outlets and medical services providers.

Industrial and business districts across Belmont and the wider Perth area often lack infrastructure that supports sustainable and active travel modes such as walking and cycling. In addition, public transport services are often sporadic, limiting access to employment and increasing parking issues and traffic congestion. This restricts access

for customers and ultimately impacts on an organisation’s bottom line.

In order to make Belmont an attractive place to work and do business, the City is committed to working with the State Government to improve or introduce alternative transport solutions in our commercial and industrial districts.

To find out more about this initiative, contact the City’s TravelSmart Officer on 9477 7163 or [email protected]

OUR COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS wIN wITH KULBARDI Australia’s first Aboriginal business and office supplies company recently opened in Belmont, cementing a unique joint-venture with national company Quick Corporate Australia (QCA).

‘Kulbardi’ the Nyoongar name for magpie – is set to offer a ‘win-win-win’ proposition for its customers, employees and the Aboriginal community as a result of a Community Investment Fund (CIF) which has been integrated into Kulbardi’s business model.

“Kulbardi is going to be a one-stop shop for all business and office supplies, from stationery to furniture and workwear to canteen services, while at the same time we will create employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal people and offer the business sector the chance to support a dynamic Aboriginal-owned business,” said Kulbardi CEO, Kim Collard.

Kulbardi is 51% Aboriginal owned and managed. The business is a joint-venture with Quick Corporate Australia.

“This is a great union for Quick Corporate Australia and makes perfect business sense given the growth stage we are at commercially,” said Darren Hayes, CEO of QCA. QCA has been operating in the Australian market for close to 20 years.

The company is focused on creating employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal people – significantly 66% of Kulbardi’s current workforce is Aboriginal. In addition, the company has an Aboriginal Employment Strategy and will seek to employ additional Aboriginal staff members as the business grows.

Kulbardi will offer a diverse range of business and office supplies, including stationery, furniture, promotional marketing, work wear, janitorial facilities, print management and kitchen and canteen services and 24/7 online ordering.

Kulbardi Pty Ltd are located at 63 Belmont Avenue, Belmont and can be contacted on 1300 551 042 or at www.kulbardi.com.au

The City of Belmont development application process has been improved. A new suite of checklists for the application forms have been tailored to the development type and zone. The checklist reduces the likelihood of a request for additional information which can cause a delay in your approval time.

For more information, contact the City’s Planning Team on 9477 7222 or visit www.belmont.wa.gov.au

CHEMICALS OF SECURITY CONCERN The Australian Government and industry have developed a voluntary code of practice to help businesses stop terrorists gaining access to chemicals that can be used to make bombs.

The code is for importers, distributors, transporters, universities, farmers, hardware stores, pool chemical suppliers, pharmacies and any other business that sells or handles the 11 chemicals the code applies to. Applying the code is not expensive and makes good business sense. We can all work together to help keep Australia safe from terrorist attacks.

The website contains many resources designed to help businesses improve their chemical security including sector specific guidance, training information and details on the 11 high risk chemicals that terrorists can use as ingredients to make bombs.

For information and to obtain a copy of the national code of practice, visit www.chemicalsecurity.gov.au The National Security Hotline can be contacted on 1800 1234 00 or emailed at [email protected]
