The modern medical I Botanical scientists have also carried out so many researches on Arjuna and do not find any difference with the ancestery knowledge. Arjuna is one ofthe most useful drugs of Ayurvedic materia-medica, the study of the progress of knowledge with regard to this drug has to be examined in a sequen- tial pattern mainly from Vedic era to the medieval period . ~BSTRACT

Ancient Indian Medical knowledge known as Ayurveda goes back to a imme-

morial past. The Vedas and Puranas refer various materials of medical importance

including herbs, plants and trees etc.

The ancient medical scientists have mentioned the properties of the Arjuna,

and recommended mainly for the management of Hrita I Rudhira vikaras, Vrana,

Prameha, Visa Vikaras, Asrugdhara, Kshetriya I Shukra dosha etc .. The modern

medical I Botanical scientists have also carried out so many researches on Arjuna

and do not find any difference with the ancestery knowledge.

Arjuna is one ofthe most useful drugsof Ayurvedic materia-medica, the study ofthe progress of knowledge with regard to

this drug has to be examined in a sequen-tial pattern mainly from Vedic era to themedieval period .

I. Vedic Period:Arjuna is mentioned in Vedas. In

Atharva Veda (IV37:3) it is said that theKrirru (microbes) keep themselves awayfrom U1e Arjuna.

The drug was widely used in Vedicperiod as:1 Krimi nashaka (IV3734)2. Vayu mandala shodhaka (IV 37:31 )3. Kshetriya roga nashaka (11:2:8/3)4. Bala vardhaka (V:285)5. Hridya (V:28:9)4

II. Sarnhita period:

In Charaka Samhita (3rd centuryB.CD

), the medicinal plants have beenclassified according to Karma (action) andprabhava (specific action).

Arjuna is mentioned in theKashayaskandhagana as Udardaprashamana (anti urticarials). It has alsobeen amentioned in 84 varieties ofAsavas which are considered the mostwholesome, out of the innumerable variet-

ies resulting from different combinations.The uses of Arjuna for various con-

ditions found in Charaka Samhita are asunder:1. Its decoction to be taken with honey bypersons suffering from Urinary anamoliesdue to kapha and pitta.

2. As one of the ingrediants inTrikantakadya taila ghrta for managementof prameha (urinary anomalies) withpredominence of vata and kapha doshas.

3. As one of the ingrediants in ShadyushaYoga for the management of Diarrhea.

4. As one of the main drugs in theLutavisha Siddhayogas which are curativeof ulcers resulting from the insect and spi-der bites.

5. Used for the wound healing.

6. Used in the form of Udumbaradileha,Mahaneelataila for the treatment of theaffections of the three vital regions associ-ated with kapha dosha

7. As an ingrediant in pushyanuga churnafor the management of Asruqdara?

Sushruta (6th century B.C.13 classi-fied the drugs according to actions, odourand taste The Arjuna has been describedin Salsaradigana These drugs cureKushtha, Meha (Diabetes) and pandu(Anaemia). These drugs also pacifieskapha and rnedas (fat)

In One context, Sushruta describedthe Arjuna's medicinal values that, the pulpof the Kapitha (Feronia elephantum) fruit

should be taken out and its shell shouldbe filled with goats urine, kasisa etc. andthen be burried for a month in the groundunder Arjuna tree and then applied over theblack portions of the scar for restoraticn ofnormal skin colour.

Sushruta mentioned the following somany therapeutic uses of Arjuna.

1. Along with the barks of Ashvakarna etc.and latex trees for the preparation of oilyformulae in the management of woundhealing.

2. Poultice of bark of Arjuna alongwithMadhuka (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and Jambushould be applied for glandular swellingsdue to pitta after application of leeches andirritation.

3. Paste of Arjuna along with padmotpalaetc., in the management of upadamsa (ve-nereal disease) with pitta predominance.

4. In the form of Neelitaila andSairiyakaditaila for blackening the greyinghairs.

5. As alkaline antivenomous compound"Ksharagada" for anti poisonous virtues.

6 As anti dote to bites by a spider of therakta species.

7. In the form of ghrita along with Dhatakipushpa, durgs of salsaradi group for theclotting of semen.

8. As an Anjana (collyrium)prepared alongwith paala etc. for the management Rakta-bhishyanda.

9. In the form of taila along with Bijaka etc

for the management of Jirna jwara.

10. As paneeyarn with Badariphala twaketc. for the management of Atisara.

11. Along with udumbara, jambu, it is usedfor the management of Raktapitta.

12. In the form of liquid along with gayatri(Acasia catechu wild) etc. for the manage-ment of urdhwagata Raktapitta .

13. In the form of liquid with Matulungaetc. for the management of Na sa gataRaktapitta.f .

Vagbhtah -II (4th century AD.)13,theauthor of Ashtanqa Hridaya, the popularwork of highest authority and essence ofCharaka and Sushruta Sarnhita describedthe Arjuna as pa rtha and indicated inNyagroda:Jhi gana8 He was the first to pre-scribe as tonic the pulverised bark withmilk and treacle water or Rasa ghrita andvery elaborately described its therapeuticuses, such as:

1. As ghrita, along with Dhataki etc. forthe management of Kunapa (smelling likedead body).

2. As Rasayana along with Rodhra, Ga;atrietc. for the treatment of Prameha (urinarydisorders including Diabetes).

3. One of the ingrediants for the treatmentof Arshas .

4. Useful in Bala chikista.

5. As nasya, kavala grahana, along withMustaka etc. for the management ofMukharoga

Govinda Dasa, 19 th century A.D.13,the author of Bhaishajya Ratnavafi, hasmentioned Arjuna in the following formula-tions for the management of Hrita Vikaras(Cardiac disorders):-

1. Arjunadi siddha ksihram

2. Arjunatwak chlirna

3. Kakubhadi chirna

4. Arjuna ghrita5

Description:

It is a large, ever green tree, with aspreading and drooping branches. It ex-tends northwards to the sub Himalayantract, where, it is distrubuted along thebanks of streams, rivers. It is comon inChota Nagpur, Orissa and Northern Circars.It is extensively planted in many parts ofIndia specially in avenues I parks for shadeand ornament. Its stem rarely long, straightand bark is very thick, grey or pinkish green,smooth leaves sub-opposite, elliptilc, usu-ally 10-15 cm; flowers in paniculatedspikes; fruits 2.5-5.0 cm. long wingedangles, seeds ripen during Feb-May andfit for collection during April-May.

Rasayanika Sanghatana (chemicalcomposltlon") :

Bark contains - B-sitosterol, ellagicacid and tri Hydroxy, triterpenemonCarboxyllic acid. (arjunic acid -C30H4805H20;MP335° ) glucosidearjunetin (C36H580163H20;M.P238-240o)

Fruit contains ··720% Tannin

Parts used - Leaves, Bark, Seeds.

General Uses:

The bark is easily leached and thesolution used in Tanneries. It ferments moreslowly and penetrates more rapidly thanthe solutions of other tanning materials.

1. Arjunarishta.

2. Arjunatwak churna

3. Arjuna siddha kshira

4. Arjuna ghrita

5. Arjuna taila

6. Arjuna kwatha

7.Pushyanugachurna

8. Baladya ghirta etc.

Therapeutic indications / Uses:

The ancient medical scientists of India,have very extensively described its prop-erties which are as follows:

Guna - Laghu, Ruksha

Rasa - Kashaya

Virya - Shita Virya

Vipaka - Katu

Prabhava - Hridya.

According to the modern medical? botanical scientists, Arjuna is found effectiveas ebrifugal, anti dysenteric, cardiac stimulent and debriding agent of wounds. Its fruitis tonic and deobstrument.
