Arrive on Fogo Island for Tibb’s Eve celebrations on December 23rd. Originating on Newfoundland’s South Coast, Tibb’s Eve emerged as an excuse to imbibe two days earlier than the end of Advent on Christmas Day. That first evening, enjoy festive cocktails as you begin to settle in to this place where the customs and community spirit of English and Irish ancestry have been preserved in all their old-fashioned goodness. Christmas Eve finds Fogo Islanders partaking in activities ranging from crafting to carolling. Our Chefs will prepare a customary Christmas Eve supper of salt cod and other bounty of the land and sea, and those wishing to join the residents of Fogo Island at a local church in sharing their midnight celebrations are heartily welcomed to do so.

Christmas Day and beyond are filled with numerous other customs to celebrate this season marked by snow in the air and under our feet. The tradition of mummering that was brought to Newfoundland by our English ancestors is alive and well here today; join in with the locals as you render yourself unrecognizable with oversized clothing, dance, play instruments, and look just plain funny. For quieter moments, cozy up to the wood stove with a good book and a cup of locally-foraged juniper tea. Solace comes easily here as you reflect on the closing year. On Fogo Island we never let the winter keep us indoors, but it is indeed comforting to know that the warm Inn always awaits you as the great, wild North Atlantic carries on outside your window.

Sample Three-Night Itinerary DAY 1 – Tibb’s Eve – Sunday, December 23, 2018

AFTERNOON Arrive on Fogo Island for Tibb’s Eve celebrations on December 23rd. Originating on Newfoundland’s South Coast, Tibb’s Eve emerged as an excuse to celebrate two days earlier than the end of Advent on Christmas Day. Let the island start to reveal itself during the 30-minute drive through outport communities as you make your way to Fogo Island Inn.

before retiring to your suite, or head to the Cinema for a late screening of a holiday favorite.

DAY 2 – Christmas Eve – Monday, December 24, 2018

MORNING Greet the morning with a handmade wooden daybreak box left outside your door filled with coffee, tea, and fresh pastries. Linger.

7 – 10 PM Breakfast is served in the Dining Room. 10 AM Immerse yourself in a variety of outport yuletide

activities: enjoy a quiet moment by the fire, set out on an invigorating guided winter’s hike and revel in the natural beauty of Fogo Island found around every bend, or join us in the Gathering Hall for crafting tree ornaments and tree decorating.

12 – 2 PM Lunch in the Dining Room. AFTERNOON Island Orientation with a Community Host. Be

prepared for fresh perspectives and insights, stories and laughter during your half-day outing. Allow yourself to be oriented to this “salty Narnia” by the people of the place - who have retained their 400 year-old heritage; whose sense of self comes from deep historical ties to landscape and seascape; people who are profoundly at home on this “edge of the known.

6 PM Warm up with a Tetley Tea Hot Toddy in the Lounge.

6 – 9 PM Enjoy a Christmas Eve Supper in the Dining Room featuring the best of Fogo Island’s seasonal bounty of the land and sea.

LATE EVENING Gather ‘round a roaring fire in the Library for carolling, story-telling, and tales of Christmas past clutching a warm beverage in the company of loved ones and new friends.

DAY 3 – Christmas Day – Tuesday, December 25, 2018 DAYBREAK Daybreak tray placed outside your door. 8 – 2 PM Begin the day’s celebrations in the Dining Room

with a special Christmas Day Brunch and Caesar Bar made up of festive favourites culled from local Fogo Island foodways and traditions.

MORNING See our Community Host Coordinator to plan your

perfect Christmas morning activities ranging from a gentle hike along the Back Western Shore, a thrill-seeking toboggan down neighbouring hills, a snowshoe into the woods, or a skate upon the ocean.

2 PM A Christmas Day outing through the neighbouring community of Joe Batt’s Arm— the only way to truly know Fogo Island is to explore it by foot. Walk along ancient footpaths steeped in history, following the trail to Joe Batt’s Point to culminate in a visit to The Great Auk, a bronze sculpture created by artist Todd McGrain in remembrance of the now-extinct flightless seabirds which inhabited the nearby Funk Islands.

AFTERNOON Explore more of the great outdoors throughout Fogo Island’s winter wonderland, cozy up in your suite, or head to the rooftop for a warming sauna.

6 – 7 PM Cocktails and mocktails in the Lounge. Sip on our special birch eggnog—a refreshing twist on a Christmas favourite.

7 – 9 PM Traditional Festive Turkey and seasonal offerings in the Dining Room for Supper.

LATE

EVENING Head to the Cinema for a screening of a holiday favourite, or close the day with a nightcap in the Lounge.

DAY 3 – Wednesday, December 26, 2018

7 – 10 AM Farewell breakfast served at your leisure in the Dining Room.

DEPARTURE TBD… Depart Fogo Island for the ferry or nearby landing strip.
