How do I know if my child is cyberbullying others? If your child is treating others badly, is dismissive of their feelings or targeting or intentionally excluding a particular child or group, they could be seen as someone who bullies. If they also socialise online there is a chance they may also be bullying that person or group online too.

How can I stop my child from cyberbullying others? Finding out your child is bullying others can be very painful but you can help them to change as it is an early warning. We find that many children who target others may need help and guidance and positive engagement with you.

• Identifying activities where your child can be successful or feel good about themselves such as membership of a sports club or an art class.

• Praising your child’s strengths and any behaviour changes they try to make and practice treating others well at home.

• Spending one on one time with your child such as watching a movie, playing sport together or cooking with them.

More information and support can be accessed via https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent/online-risks/cyberbullying/what-if-my-child-is-cyberbullying-others

Melissa Babic Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing Leader

Strategies you can adopt include:

• Talking to the school about your child’s academic achievement, learning style and abilities and whether they need additional support. Ensure you praise strengths.

• Helping develop their social skills - your school can help support your child’s social skills development.

• Talking about how it feels to be left out or teased in a manner that they can relate too.

• Encouraging your child to be honest about their behaviour and apologise to those they have bullied.

• Talking about accepting differences and how to better deal with annoying people.

• Modelling appropriate ways of dealing with people with examples from your life such as a difficult colleague—younger children can learn about being a good winner and loser in games.

• Talking about the consequences of treating others badly and following it through, i.e. if they are rude they need to apologise and lose access to something they enjoy. Remember to also praise any change for the good so they start afresh.

Values PosterStudents at AVPS have had the opportunity to design a poster to represent our new value – Resilience. The winning design (as seen on the front page) is a collaboration of 3 posters created by Charli, Kaitlyn and Jay.

Well done to everyone involved. There were some very creative ideas put forward showing many of our students have a great understanding of what being resilient means.

Art in Miss Crystal’s class Ms Valley’s 5/6 class

Miss Crystal’s Year 2/3 class have been looking at the work of Wassily Kandinsky. He was a Russian artist famous for his abstract art. Students used crayons to recreate one of his well-known pieces, Squares with Concentric Circles.

Valley’s Victorious VIPs have had a busy term 3! Our class has been learning about and creating persuasive texts, reading a class novel called ‘Wonder’ and using literacy rotations to practise and improve our comprehension and questioning skills. In Maths we have been participating in hands-on activities to learn new concepts and have begun an investigation on budgeting. Ms Valley has introduced us to new technology this term – both the Edison and Ozobot robots. We have been learning to program the Edisons using the IPADs and Ozobots using coloured code. Mr Petch also taught us how to create animation using the IPADs. We are hoping to share our knowledge with some of the junior primary classes at the end of the term. In Art we are learning about foreshortening and creating pictures to demonstrate this effect. We chose our own topics for our Inquiry Projects this term and will be presenting our learning in week 10. As a class we decided that we are going to turn our classroom into a more flexible learning space for the last week and a half of term– to see if it helps us improve our focus and enjoy our learning in a new way!

Real Life Inquiry in H.A.S.S.On Tuesday 29th August, Mr. Docherty (Mayor of Playford) came to visit the respectful Year three and four citizens of Ms. Keenihan’s and Ms. Maloney’s classes. The visit, organised by Mrs Majstrenko, was to enable him to keep his promise to meet with students after he was unavailable to meet with them due to illness during our visit to the Playford City Council Chambers last term, which supported the students’ HASS learning program. The student representatives of both classes shared the responsibility of greeting and guiding the Mayor around the school during his morning visit. Mr. Doherty shared personal and professional information during our student forum and answered questions the students had left with his Executive Assistant Ms. Susie Reichstein after our excursion on 26th May. Our students also took the opportunity to share samples of work that both classes have been focusing on, in order to develop their understanding of how a community supports and develops its citizens. The work samples shared with the Mayor were selected by students who voted on the pieces created by their peers. Local Council services and responsibilities were also explored and identified within our Angle Vale Community. All students were very engaged during the visit discussing a range of community needs with Mr. Docherty. The Mayor accepted the invitation to meet the staff after the forum, before his afternoon commitments.Compliments and thanks were extended to our canteen manager Jo Bolderoff for her freshly baked scones and jam treats.
