Families are our biggest asset. They share valuable support and essential advice with each other in addition to the care received from medical professionals. Facebook, phone calls, emails and letters pass from home to home every day with news good and bad, with hope and laughter.

The Medley family is from Jacksonville, Florida, where parents Dean and Jennifer were both born and raised. Their children are Caroline (age 13), Anna (age 11), and Jake (age 8). Caroline and Anna are both healthy and thriving, though their little brother, Jake, is living with Late Infantile Batten disease. In September 2007, two weeks before Jake's third birthday, he experienced his fi rst seizure. Four months later he was diag-nosed with epilepsy. The next 21 months were spent trying countless anti-seizure medications, consulting with multiple specialists, and undergoing much genetic testing, while Jake was slowly losing the skills he had once acquired. He was fi nally diagnosed with LINCL in October 2009, after he lost his ability to walk and talk, and when he was beginning to lose his vision. The Medleys have received much love and sup-port from their community, family and friends over the years. Their faith in God has helped them to remain strong, even when they felt like giving up.

BDSRA: You seemed to have done well with Jake’s seizure control. Can you tell us a little about what has helped you feel successful from the beginning stages until now?

Jennifer: When Jake was fi rst diagnosed with epilepsy, his neurologist prescribed an anti-seizure medication that we thought would begin controlling his seizures within several weeks. That particular medication actually made his seizures more frequent and severe, so we began weaning him off it and onto a new one. This went on for over a year, trying one medication after another until we fi nally found the best com-bination for Jake. We learned that we were likely not going

to be able to stop the seizures altogether, though we fi gured out what medications were most successful in minimizing the number of seizures with the least side effects. Jake has been on a combination of Banzel and Clonazepam since 2009. We have learned that when his seizures become more frequent it is usually time for an increase in dosage due to weight gain. Last year we had to add Keppra, and have been satisfi ed with his seizure control since then. We know that he is going to experience myoclonic seizures daily and there is nothing we can do about that, so we do not let that stress us out. It is the tonic-clonic seizures that we closely monitor. Jake will have one every 3-8 weeks or so. I am very active on the BDSRA Facebook group, and have learned that that is about average for other children with LINCL in Jake's age range. We are comfortable with Jake's current seizure control, even though every single one is diffi cult to witness.

BDSRA: How did you monitor his seizures and how those seizures were treated?

Jennifer: We keep a written record of the tonic-clonic sei-zures Jake has, indicating the date, duration, and if emergency anti-seizure medication was administered. We time every sei-zure, and administer Diazepam rectally if it lasts longer than three minutes or if Jake's color turns bluish and he appears to be struggling to breathe.

BDSRA: Can you share your thoughts about how Jake’s treatment team is engaged in his care?

Jennifer: We are very fortunate that Jake's primary doctor is his uncle, my sister's husband. He is a family practioner and is very involved in Jake's care. He makes home visits when-ever we need him to, and is very accessible to us. He works closely with Jake's neurologist, who is very familiar with Bat-ten disease. We see Jake's neurologist in his clinic every four to six months now. He is also recently being seen by a pul-monologist due to respiratory issues over the last six months. We have chosen to minimize the amount of specialists Jake sees over the last few years. He used to see his dietician and gastroenterologist regularly because he is G-tube fed, and has been to other specialists, though now we only see these specialists if problems arise. We have a pretty good handle on his care now, and have chosen not to spend all of our time running Jake from specialist to specialist.

BDSRA: How has the family adjusted over time to Jake’s seizures? What do you tell his sisters about what he is going through?

Jennifer: We all know that Jake's seizures are a part of this dreadful disease we all are forced to live with, and unfortu-nately, they are just a part of our daily life. Caroline and Anna

have lived with this for 5 years now, so it's about all they know. We explained to them years ago that Jake's brain's nor-mal electrical activity is disrupted during a seizure, which will cause him to jerk or "zone out." They are used to Jake mak-ing little jerks throughout the day, and know how to "snap him out of" an absence seizure. They say that he is in "Jake Land" when he has one of these. He started having tonic-clonic seizures about 15 months ago. Caroline witnessed her fi rst one a few months ago, and Anna has yet to see one. I have prepared them both for what one of these seizures will look like, and even showed them a video of him having one of his worst tonic-clonic seizures. We have always been real honest and up front with the girls about every aspect of this disease.

BDSRA: Any other tips or ideas to share with other families?

Jennifer: Always do what you think is best for your child when it comes to seizure control. Seek advice from other parents of children with Batten disease, who can be a tremendous sup-port, though don't base your decisions solely on the advice of other parents. You know your child better than anyone and know what will make them the most comfortable and happy.

February 28th is Rare Disease Day. How will you tell your story?

This international advocacy day helps bring attention to the challenges faced by families just like ours. In the U.S., any disease affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans is considered rare. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there are nearly 7,000 such diseases affecting nearly 30 million Americans. We all know the challenges:

• Diffi culty getting a timely, accurate diagnosis• Too little research• Too few treatments• Reimbursement or other issues affecting access to treatments• A sense of isolation • Diffi culty fi nding medical experts

Tell your story to your local paper, congressional representative or even your Facebook friends.

NEWS FROM OUR SUPPORTERSBy Julie Conry, Senior Director of Advancement & Outreach

2012 BDSRA Annual Fund Meets Challenge Goal

Donations to the 2012 BDSRA Annual Fund surpassed the challenge match by an anonymous donor to generate a total of $114,000 for BDSRA research and services. The challenge match of $50,000 was met through more than 550 donors who contributed nearly $64,000 in cash to the annual fund campaign. The campaign was launched in October 2012, and concluded in December. Many donors noted they were inspired to help meet the match goal and double their donations dollar for dollar.

“We are amazed and grateful for the generous response and contributions this campaign has brought for BDSRA,” noted Margie Frazier, executive director. “The challenge was very motivating for our supporters and we will strive to exceed this goal in coming years,” she said.

California Friendship Group Supports BDSRA Annual Fund

The Ta Da Circle of Friends, a California-based group of women who dedicate craft shows profi ts to favorite charities, chose to honor Jessica Hynie and the Batten disease research efforts as their 2012 nonprofi t focus for their fundraising efforts. Ta Da, which stands for “Totally Awesome and Deeply Appreciated,” has a mission to ‘pay it forward,’ according to Linda Smith, a founding member of the group. The women’s group meets regularly for fellowship and they devote signifi cant time to create handmade products they sell at specialty craft shows, she said.

“One member of the group knows the Hynie family and we chose to dedicate our 2012 charity project proceeds to support Batten disease,” Smith noted. “We knew very little about this devastating disease, like so many people we talked with, so com-munity awareness also became our mission as part of the project,” she said. Through the sales of items such as sock cupcakes, sold at craft shows and on the group’s website Little Gems, the group donated $650 to the BDSRA annual fund campaign.

Created in 2008, the Circle of Friends is dedicated to “defying age through emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual well-ness,” according to Smith.

California Teens Honor Cousins and Raise Funds for BDSRA

Vacaville, California, teens Jakob Sharp, 13, and his brother Zack Sharp, 17, do-nated $1,885 to the BDSRA Annual Fund through contributions they raised by sponsors for their participation in the Vacaville Recreation Foundation’s Annual Run for Fun last October. The two brothers dedicated their race to their cousins Korry Sharp, 19, and Rachael Sharp, 16, who have Late Infantile Batten disease. The boys each pushed their cousins in their wheelchairs during the event.

“My hope is to raise money for this cause, not just for this disease, but for other diseases as well, and just raise awareness,” Zack noted. “For the two of us, it’s sort of a chance to do something for our cousins,” Jakob added. The boys said creating new memories with their cousins has taken on more importance as time passes, and that this event was one way to honor their courage and share in an experience that would help educate others about Batten disease.

Georgia Sharp, Korry and Rachael’s mother, said her daughters were diagnosed after symptoms began to appear when they were in kindergarten. Often people ask what they can do to help, she said, and it is sometime diffi cult to fi nd a response to that. “But this is absolutely what people can do, this is the best kind of help there is,” she said of the teens and their efforts to raise funds for BDSRA.

High School Students Donate to Celia’s Walk

Kacie Lang is a typical high school student at Hilliard Darby High School near Columbus, Ohio, one who enjoys hanging out with friends and planning social activities. Not one to sit on the sidelines, however, once she learned about Batten disease and research initiatives across the country, she enlisted classmates, teachers and friends to donate volunteer time and money to Celia’s Walk this past fall. Attending the walk several times with her mother, who works as a nurse at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Lang was inspired to do more for a cause that touched her heart.

“I do not know Celia’s family, but the walks and amazing things I heard about them from my mom’s coworkers were magnifi cent and I wanted to help,” Lang said. “After many weeks of hard work on our project, we were able to raise and donate $558 to BDSRA in honor of Celia,” she said.

Through bake sales, raffl es, restaurant promotional events, and school donations, Lang worked with her fellow students in her high school’s Renaissance program, a leadership development group, to gener-ate donations for BDSRA and Celia’s Walk. A main effort, she noted, was raising awareness as well as funds for Batten disease.

“We put a great deal of effort into getting the word out about what Batten disease is and the tremendous toll it takes on families,” Lang said. “I recited count-less times what Batten disease is to teachers, students, and staff because many had never heard of the disease before.”

Celia’s Walk to Defeat Batten Disease Holds 2012 Event in Grandview

Hundreds of supporters, family members and friends of the Betz family of Grandview, Ohio, gathered at the local high school track November 4, 2012 for the 4th Annual Celia’s Walk to Defeat Batten Disease. Jenni and Andy Betz lost their daughter, Celia, in January 2012 from INCL. The annual walk is organized

and hosted by staff from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Inten-sive Care Unit, led by volunteers Sara Zeller Chernick and Allison Walker. For 2012, $5,959 was donated to BDSRA through par-ticipants and donors to Celia’s Walk. The link

to the nursing community is strong for the Betz family, as Andy Betz, his father, an aunt, and Jenni’s sister are all nurses who helped care for Celia.

“This year was another successful chapter in our journey to raise awareness and fi nancial support for research for Batten disease. We believe that the support we garner from generous community members does positively impact the lives of those affected by Batten disease,” according to Chernick and Walker. “Just like the Batten Disease Support and Research Association’s mantra, we too aim to be a ‘light in a world of darkness.’”

Each year brings new ideas to expand and enhance the local fun-draiser, according to Walker. In addition to making raffl e items available, T-shirts and other promotional proceeds are included to support the ef-fort. The Wexner Medical Center MICU nurses also have projects they organize throughout the year to help fund the costs of the walk, supplies, and refreshments for participants. The group has also focused on making registration and contribution processes more streamlined, and created a website for the event (https://www.facebook.com/CeliasWalk) to share photos, raise awareness, and thank donors. The Betz family also maintains a blog with Celia’s story at http://betzfamilycolumbus.blogspot.com.

“We are fortunate to have the continued support of the Medical ICU staff at the Wexner Medical Center,” noted Walker. “Their fundraising efforts in the months leading up to the event this year paid for more than 80 percent of all operational expenses.”

Shining stars not only light up the skies at night but also shine here in BDSRA’s Illuminator.

This Christmas season, the 3rd Grade Class of Water Oak Elementary, Sulphur Springs, TX, re-ally wanted to do something special for someone. One of the students is friends with Emily Collins. After much discussion, they set up a hot chocolate stand in front of a local bank (smart thinking) and raised money in Emily’s honor to help fi nd a cure for Batten disease.

With grateful hearts we recognize Alexis Coffman, Jasmer Coleman, Ty Grant, Addie Price, Kiara Stowater and Jadyn VanWinkle. We thank all of you for your sincere compassion for others.

BDSRA is very fortunate to have a dedicated Board of Directors whose members contribute their time, experi-ences and expertise to help the organi-zation meet its mission and goals. We asked Debbie Ham of Vancouver, WA, and new board member, Tony Ferran-dino of Newtown, PA, to share a little bit about themselves.

In a few sentences, talk about how BDSRA was made known to you and how we helped your family when your children were/are af-fected?

Debbie: In the spring of 1991 our son Daniel Yanak was diagnosed with Batten disease at Oregon Health Sci-ences University. When we received the diagnosis we were given a couple of brochures with information about Batten disease, the brochures were published by BDSRA. I contacted BDSRA, that was my fi rst conversation with Lance. I always appreciated know-ing we weren’t alone; I was connected with other families in Washington and

Oregon. I always appreciated know-ing that BDSRA was there when I had questions or needed support.

Tony: On January 30, 2007, after a two year journey of trying to fi gure out what was wrong with our little Drew, we received the devastating news that Drew has Late Infantile Batten disease. Little did we know, our journey was just beginning. The team of doctors admit-tedly had never seen a child with Batten disease so they had limited information. Katie and I were determined to fi ght for our son and give him the best pos-sible life we could. That fi ght started with BDSRA - we reached out to Lance the day we received the diagnosis. Lance gave us so much great informa-tion about what to expect and what is going on in the scientifi c community. From that day on, BDSRA has been in our lives and has been a great source of support and hope.

What are you most proud of accomplishing with your board team?

Debbie: The board consists of smart, dedicated and compassionate people. All organizations go through changes which aren’t always easy; in the past year that is certainly true of BDSRA. I’ve been so impressed with the vision the board has for BDSRA, their willing-ness to work together on behalf of all of our children and their dedication to fi nding a cure. The new changes regarding how research projects are evaluated and the partnerships regard-ing funding are very important and I

believe, over time, will prove to be more effective in fi nding the cure.

Tony: The Batten community is fortunate to have a team of people as dedicated as the Board of BDSRA. The focus is clear; we need to fi nd a cure for this disease and help our fellow families cope with life while that cure is being pursued.

What do you want membership to look forward to?

Debbie: I am excited about the vision Margie and her team have for BDSRA. I think families will see BDSRA grow as an organization and in our ability to infl uence and partner on research. I also believe our family support pro-grams will become more streamlined and effective in reaching an even larger number of families affected by Batten disease.

Tony: Our membership should look forward to a day when Batten disease is a thing of the past. With hope and pas-sion we will get there.

BDSRA partnered with the Child Neurological Society’s NDC Symposium on October 31, 2012 in Huntington Beach, CA. The Symposium is a forum for preeminent investigators assembled to discuss recent accomplishments and future directions with a large group of child neurologists, program offi cers from the National Institutes of Health, and members of dedicated foundations and associations.

350 attendees listened to a full day of presentations by Batten researchers who work with us on an ongoing basis. Additionally, Marcus Kerner, immediate past board member and his wife, Joanna, joined us for the day’s luncheon. Marcus spoke eloquently about his family’s experiences raising Daniel, whom they lost in 2010. We were excited and honored to be part of this important event. To listen to highlights, log on to www.neurobiologyofdisease.com. Many thanks to Jon Mink, David Pearce, and Bernie Maria of NDC for helping us organize this great event.
