August 2017 Newsletter

The United Methodist Church

of Garrettsville

Hello All!

As I am writing this we are less than a week away from

August, which goes to show that the Summer moves

along just as quickly as the rest of the year! Even

though we have grown accustomed to the feel of

Summer ( and a slower pace of things ) there is a lot of

news for us to receive.

First of all, it is finally coming to a sanctuary near

us! What is that? The WINDOW PROJECT is

scheduled to begin around August 7. We do not know

exactly how long it will take, but we know it will be done.

We do not know how this will affect us on the inside of

the building, but we imagine it will in some ways.

Please know that we might need to relocate to the big

fellowship hall for worship on an occasion or two to

accommodate the workers.

Second, it has been very nice to have had about

10 people in the Music Room on recent Tuesday

mornings watching and learning from a really great PBS

program entitled, “God in America”. And some of our

people have been coming to this deeper understanding,

and I think they have enjoyed it very much as well. This

will be wrapping up on August 8th, but, a new cycle of

the program will begin on September 11, the Monday

night after Labor Day Monday. It will be the same as

what the Tuesday morning group experienced. This

will go from 7 to 8:30 PM for 6 nights.

2 Rev. Rich Thewlis

It is exciting to see people learning in this way. Why? Is this just

a matter of new information? Is this just like learning fun facts about

Iceland or something ( actually, I would love to see Iceland )? No. We

need to realize that our Faith has content. It is not just a matter of

saying we trust God’s grace. When we say we believe it means that

there is something there that we do believe. That is why our closing

Benediction has us say these words: We have come to Worship -

Learn - Grow - Serve. Yes, we say this when we have just concluded

worship, which is our corporate celebration of being the Body of Christ

in this place. And worship is so important. But there are more words

there. If in fact there is something there for us to believe, we need to

do something to find out what this is. It takes some effort and desire on

our part to explore this with others. When we do this, we do in fact

grow, and then we finish the process by serving in some way which

adds God’s goodness to life and others. Worship - Learn - Grow

-Serve.

Third and finally, while it has been too much like trying to herd

cats, I believe that the NETWORK program will start very soon. My

plan is to have a section of it on Tuesday mornings beginning on

August 15 from 10 AM till 12 noon. This will include August 15, 22, and

29. There will also be an evening group starting on Wednesday nights

beginning August 9 at 7 PM until 9 PM. This will cover August 9, 16,

and 23. I believe that this will be very beneficial for our church. And

please know, this is sequential which means it requires a promise to

attend all three sessions in a row, and then it will be done. These two

groups will not be the only ones. I hope that there will be many others.

Please know that you can mix and match between morning and

evening if that helps your schedule. There are three distinct sessions

which all need to be completed. But you could do a few morning or

evening :-)

We march on. Take God’s goodness with you beyond our

building. But also be a part of the sacred community that can only be

built within our walls. Both parts are needed. May God bless and keep

you, and all the world.

And yes… GO TRIBE!
