A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Saginaw Valley State University remains committed to excellence in academic and professional

programs that prepare highly qualified graduates. To this end, the office of Sponsored and Academic

Programs Support aims to increase faculty participation in sponsored programs and seeks to develop

their capacity in the area of grant proposal development while supporting them in the submission of

proposals. Assistance is offered by providing access to information about potential funding sources,

aiding in the preparation and development of budgets, editing proposals prior to submission to external

sponsors, publishing campus announcements and updates, hosting workshops for faculty and students,

and assisting in the preparation of required reports.

Sponsored Programs staff facilitates the external proposal development and submission process and

administers selected awards after they are received. The staff in this office works with principal

investigators/directors to monitor compliance procedures once grants are awarded. Careful

management of selected institutional grants is vital, as the acquisition of future external funding is

dependent on the University’s ability to prove they are good stewards of the funding that has been

granted.

This annual report marks the achievements of our faculty and staff who further their work by winning

grants and contracts from diverse sponsors. Saginaw Valley State University’s sponsored and academic

programs help build partnerships with institutions, agencies, and corporations—receiving nearly 3.7

million in external grants, contracts, and sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2010. We commend

the members of the University community for their accomplishments.

INTERNAL GRANTS FOR FACULTY DEVELOPMENT The internal grant opportunities described below are available to SVSU faculty to support their

professional growth and research. Fiscal year 2010 recipients of internal funds and release time are

listed in this report under the college in which they reside.

SVSU Faculty Research and Professional Growth Awards

Each year the University Unit Committees recommend funding for faculty proposals requesting release

time for research and/or professional development with consultation between the president of the

Faculty Association and the vice president for Academic Affairs. The charge of the committees is to

encourage and promote scholarship, advanced studies, and research among SVSU faculty. Committee

responsibilities include the evaluation of applications and recommendation for the allocation of these

funds. In fiscal year 2010, the University Unit Committees supported faculty requests totaling $63,549

and 66.4 hours of release time.

Sabbatical Leave

Fifteen sabbaticals were granted by the Board of Control in fiscal year 2010. SVSU professors are eligible

to apply for sabbatical leave upon six consecutive years of service to the University.

SVSU Faculty Supplemental Funds

Each academic dean and vice president for Academic Affairs determines additional University support

for professional development conference participation. Fifty–nine faculty requests were supported with

$27,846 in fiscal year 2010 for presentations and conference participation.

SVSU Foundation Resource Grants

SVSU Foundation Resource Grants enhance scholarship, further the academic and cultural missions of

the University, and/or have significant impact on the University community for projects and programs

which directly benefit and involve SVSU students. The evaluation committee includes appointed

community members from the SVSU Foundation Board. For fiscal year 2010, thirteen grants were

awarded totaling $38,397.

SVSU Allen Foundation Student/Faculty Research Grant

SVSU Allen Foundation Research Grants support student/faculty research that addresses various health

and nutritional issues facing the region. For fiscal year 2010, four grants were awarded totaling $15,078.
