A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life...neither height nor depth nor anything else in all

creation will be able to separate us from the love of God” Rom:8:38

Last weekend I had the privilege of attending the wedding of Matthew and Sarah Deeth at the

beautiful grounds of Mater Dei. Matthew was a member of the 1999 Graduation class of Broughton

and has gone on to undertake work as a journalist. Matthew and Sarah sought to use their

wedding service to remind their guests of the wonderful relationship that we all can have with God

through Christ. They chose the verses from Romans to give us the assurance that through Christ all

barriers to our relationship with God have been removed.

Attending this wedding and catching up with a number of ex-students reminded me again of the high quality of the

Broughton graduate. I was also reminded of how the College can be used as a means for leading present and past

students to accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

It was interesting to note that the verses from Romans were discussed both in my bible study and in my church’s

sermon in the past two weeks. Matthew and Sarah had no idea that the verses in the marriage service were going to be

mentioned in my study or sermon in the same week. Because of this ‘co-incidence’, the verses have been in my

thoughts throughout this week and I have been eager to share them with the College community.

As we approach the Easter season the verses give us an understanding of the reasons behind Jesus’ death and

resurrection. Through his death on the cross, Jesus broke down the barrier between us and God allowing us to gain all

the blessings and grace that God has promised us.

COLLEGE TOURS

Over the past week there have been a number of tours of the College, as part of our Year 7 (2011) and Preparatory –

Kindergarten (2011) Information Activities. These tours have allowed us to showcase the quality of education that

Broughton provides.

A large number of guests on the tours have asked me to pass on how impressed they were with the College. Many

commented on the open spaces of the College, the excellent facilities and resources and the technology that our

students have access to. However, there were two particular aspects of the College that our visitors were most

impressed about and that is the students and the staff.

Parents who joined us on the Year 7 Twilight tours were impressed with the quality of our College Captains and our

Middle School Leadership Team. The way these students presented themselves and shared their passion for Broughton

was a credit to their parents, their teachers and themselves. Similarly, the Junior School Leadership Team took on the

challenge of meeting and talking to parents attending the Prep – Kindergarten tours and showed a high level of

maturity and leadership.

The parents and grandparents who attended the Prep – Kindergarten tours on Monday 22 March were able to visit the

classrooms and witness teachers and their students interacting. Parents have commented on both the positive learning

environment in our classrooms and the way in which staff and students relate.

Parents interested in our Prep – Kindergarten program have an opportunity to take a Twilight Tour of the College

immediately before the Preparatory – Kindergarten (2011) Information Night to be held on Tuesday 30 March 2010.

Other opportunities for tours will be available throughout the year. Bookings for College tours can be made by

contacting Mrs Auterson in our Main Administration Office.

PARENTS AS COACHES

At the Parents and Friends meeting this week, Mr Colin Morse (Head of Senior School at Broughton 2000 -2008) gave a

presentation of a program entitled ‘Parents as Coaches’. This program operates on the premise that parents can assist,

guide and coach their children by building a strong relationship with them.

The program believes that parents are the best ‘life coaches’ that their children can have. Through this program parents

build on the skills they have and allows them to develop improved communication with their children. It gives them

strategies to develop leadership qualities in their children.

The program involves workshops over an eight week period which would be held at the College. On-line support

would be available to assist parents to develop their coaching role. The cost of the eight week program is $30 per

family (if one parent attends) or $40 (if two members of the family attend).

Please note this program is suitable for parents of students in both the Secondary School and the Junior School.

Parents who wish to enrol in this program or would like further information may contact the Secondary Office of the

College or email [email protected]

CULTURAL VISIT TO HONG KONG AND BEIJING

During the April vacation Mrs Murdoch and I will be travelling with 20 students on a cultural exchange tour to Hong

Kong and Beijing. This tour has been in the planning since 2008 and the students who are travelling are excited as the

final countdown commences.

The itinerary for the tour will include a visit to Saint Too Canaan Christian School in Hong Kong. The College and Saint

Too Canaan have been working towards developing a partnership to allow students from both schools to experience

the richness of a different culture and to understand the diverse opportunities for Christian worship in different

countries. Both schools would like to negotiate ways in which we can combine and undertake a humanitarian project in

China at a future date.

The students travelling with the tour and their parents have asked me to pass on their thanks for the many hours of

work undertaken and the number of meetings that Mrs Murdoch has arranged on their behalf.

I ask that the College community keep the students on this tour in their prayers.

CHINA EXCHANGE STUDENTS – AUGUST 2010

As part of the developing relationship between Broughton and Saint Too Canaan Christian School, there may be

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Our Writer of the Week is Rachael Nieuwenhuis of Year 8 for her imaginative narrative in the Fantasy genre

‘She lay there, quietly panting. Swift had been running far too long and her legs were weak. The forest where she was

hiding had trees so tall that Capricorn’s blood drakes wouldn’t be able to see her.

‘Why am I here?’ she asked herself. ‘Why didn’t I stay home?’

The local dragon had stolen her most prized possession, a necklace. It had a single gem set in the centre of a silver disk.

The disk was intricately carved with serpents and fire-birds, so intricately that the serpents seemed to writhe

menacingly, and the fire-birds burn and flap their wings protectively.

Naturally she had followed the dragon after he had taken it from her. She remembered the stench of old bones and

soot, the dampness of the cave, the dragon’s one silver eye, the other ice-blue. But most of all she remembered his

voice. Speaking in a deep rumbling baritone that shook her to her bones, he had asked why she was there…
