A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

“EVERYONE AND ANYONE”

 

Last  Sunday  I  asked  you  to  do  “everything  and  anything”  to  help make  up  for  the  $3,000.00 shortfall in our Sunday‐Offertory (Collection) which resulted from the record rainfall and floods of 14 August 2011.   Please take a  look at the Faith and Finances Page of this Bulletin and see  just what “everything and anything” did. 

After  you  read  that  Good  News,  please  keep  reading  and  take  a  close  look  at  the  Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) Page.   For over three months that page has charted the growth  in the number  of  CMA‐donors,  the  amount  pledged  to  the  CMA,  and  the  amount  of  CMA‐satisfied pledges.   Well,  as  of  this  past Wednesday  (24  August  2011)  our  CMA‐satisfied  pledges  have exceeded our CMA‐goal!  Thanks be to God and the Spirit of Generosity that moved 267 of you to help us get there!  (That 267 represents less than 10% of our registered families.  Just imagine if “everyone and anyone” in the family did what they could to help.) 

His  Holiness  Pope  Benedict  XVI,  in  a  recent  message  to  Bishop  Adolfo  Uriona  of  Anatuya, Argentina wrote: “even the smallest donation counts for God!”   With that  in mind,  I am asking those of you who have not made a pledge to the CMA, to please do “everything and anything” you can to  join the 267 others who have.   Please.   Your contributions will not only continue to help get our Pastoral Year Seminarian Jacob Onyumbe (and others) to the Priesthood (like it did Associate  Pastor,  Father Mastrogiacomo),  but  because we  have  surpassed  our  CMA‐goal with paid pledges, 80 cents of every dollar pledged and paid to the Catholic Ministries Appeal will be returned to Our Holy Redeemer! 

In the past, the CMA‐rebate (a direct result of your contributions to the Appeal) was used to help make Our Holy Redeemer School building safer and more energy efficient with  the addition of new boilers and windows.  An addition that has both saved the Parish money and improved the environment where we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, educate the children, and gather to pray.  Over the next few weeks as the number of CMA‐donors and CMA‐satisfied pledges continues to grow, so too will our CMA‐rebate grow, and as it does, people who come home will see even greater things than these at Our Holy Redeemer, where coming home is what it’s all about and has been for one hundred years! 

Scripture Reflection “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (See Matthew 16:21-27). Saint Peter, who had just been praised for acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God--something that flesh and blood had not revealed to him--is now rebuked for reverting to

thinking “as human beings do.” We could easily say in his defense, isn’t that what we are? Aren’t we all human beings? How are we expected to stop thinking as such? Christians are called to be different. Christians are called to let themselves be guided by the Spirit of God. It is not what I think, but what God thinks. I can think clearly and correctly only when my thinking is in harmony with God’s thinking. This is why we need the Church. The Church helps us to know what God thinks. This is why we need to pray—prayer helps us to get in touch with God’s thoughts. This is why we need to come regularly to Mass, because in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass we see in front of us the example of Jesus who molded His life in harmony with the thoughts of God. This is why we also need the intercessions of our Saints, especially of the Blessed Mother, because even though they were human beings, their aim was to think as God did. May that be our aim as well. It is worth it. Our life depends on doing it. As Jesus goes on to say in this Gospel, “what can one give in exchange for his life?”

“Everything and Anything”: that is the answer I got from Human Services Director Mr. Alfonso Martinez when inquiring about September’s First Sunday Works of Mercy. If anything speaks to the difficult times we are in, Alfonso’s response certainly does. I cannot thank God enough for the gift of Alfonso, and the growing (thanks be to God) number of volunteers who take “everything and anything” we offer, and patiently give it away to people who really need it! And I cannot thank God enough for the gift of each (and every) one of you who offer “everything and anything” (the food, the drink, the clothing, the money, the time) to Parish Human Services. You continue to show the world that everything and anything is possible with God! (cf. Saint Luke I:37).

UN MENSAJE DEL PASTOR

¡El Misal Viene! ¡El Misal Viene! ¡El Misal Viene! El Misal Romano que los Servidores del Altar conocen como el Sacramentario (o el “libro grande”) es “el” libro que dirige el modo en el que adoramos en la Misa. Contiene las palabras y acciones de tanto el Sacerdote como la Asamblea. Después de muchos años de ora et labora (orar y trabajar), una traducción más fiel del Misal Romano en inglés ha sido preparada y ya está lista para ser implementada universalmente el Primer Domingo de Adviento, 27 de noviembre de 2011.

PREPARACIÓN PARA IMPLEMENTARLO

“El prepararse para el Misal Romano no es sencillamente cuestión de comprar nuevos libros y aprender a recitar o cantar nuevos textos. Es una oportunidad para examinar y renovar nuestra celebración y entendimiento de la Liturgia Eucarística y está en el corazón de la vida Cristiana. La traducción revisada de la liturgia profundizará nuestra fe usando palabras e imágenes que han surgido de la rica Tradición teológica de la Iglesia. Nutrirá nuestra fe para el día en el que podamos celebrar el Banquete del Cordero con el Señor mismo en el cielo. También celebrará el amor sin límites de Dios, que se muestra más profundamente en el Misterio Pascal de Jesucristo, que se celebra y se hace presente en la Liturgia Eucarística. El período de implementación nos ofrece la oportunidad para profundizar nuestro entendimiento y aprecio de la Liturgia, afianzar nuestras prácticas litúrgicas y nos llevará a una participación litúrgica más plena con un propósito renovado. La implementación del texto revisado no es una rechazo de las últimos cuarenta años (o cuatrocientos años) de práctica Litúrgica. Es una oportunidad de profundizar el entendimiento y dar mayor atención a las palabras y ademanes, así como aumentar la participación intencional. La Liturgia renovada nos ayudará a formar discípulos que vivan en comunión con Dios y los unos con otros—discípulos que vivan la vida cristiana. No es suficiente para los sacerdotes el practicar los textos revisados y para el coro aprender las textos músicos nuevos. Cada miembro de la parroquia debe entender no solo el contexto de los cambios (los textos revisados de las oraciones) sino también las razones subyacentes para esos cambios.” Es con esto en mente que me complazco en anunciar que: a partir de Septiembre, ofreceremos aquí en Nuestro Santo Redentor un curso gratuito sobre el Misal Romano y la Misa. Este curso nos ayudará a estar seguros de alcanzar la meta declarada por los Padres del Segundo Concilio Vaticano –“una participación plena consciente y activa” de todos los fieles en la Acción Litúrgica; no solo durante el tiempo del Primer Domingo de Adviento, ¡sino también para cuando el Señor Obispo Murphy venga a casa (el 10 de junio de 2012) a Nuestro Santo Redentor donde el venir a casa es lo importante!

 

    

REFLEXIÓN SEMANAL “¡Tu modo de pensar no es el de Dios, sino el de los hombres!” (Ver Mateo 16:21-27) San Pedro, que acababa de ser alabado por reconocer a Jesús como Hijo de Dios—algo que la carne y la sangre no le habían revelado—ahora es reprendido por pensar como “los hombres.” Fácilmente pudiéramos salir en su defensa diciendo que después de todo San Pedro era un hombre y tenía que pensar como los hombres lo hacen. No obstante, los cristianos han sido llamados a ser diferentes. Los cristianos han sido llamados a ser guiados por el Espíritu de Dios. No es lo que yo pienso, sino lo que Dios piensa. Yo puedo pensar clara y correctamente solo cuando mi pensar está en armonía con el pensamiento de Dios. Es por eso que necesitamos la Iglesia. La Iglesia nos ayuda a conocer el pensamiento de Dios. Es por eso que necesitamos orar... la oración nos ayuda

a estar en armonía con los pensamientos de Dios. Es por eso que necesitamos venir a Misa con regularidad, porque en el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa vemos ante nosotros el ejemplo de Jesús, quien moldeó su vida en armonía con los pensamientos de Dios. Es por eso que necesitamos las intercesiones de nuestros santos, especialmente las de nuestra Santa Madre María, porque aunque ellos eran seres humanos, tuvieron como la meta de sus vidas el pensar como lo hace Dios. Que esa también sea nuestra meta en la vida. Vale la pena hacerlo, pues como pasa a decir Jesús en este Evangelio, “¿de qué le sirve a uno ganar el mundo entero, si pierde su vida?”

2279 Aunque la muerte se considere inminente, los cuidados ordinarios debidos a una persona enferma no pueden ser legítimamente interrumpidos. El uso de analgésicos para aliviar los sufrimientos del moribundo, incluso con riesgo de abreviar sus días, puede ser moralmente conforme a la dignidad humana si la muerte no es pretendida, ni como fin ni como medio, sino solamente prevista y tolerada como inevitable. Los cuidados paliativos constituyen una forma privilegiada de la caridad desinteresada. Por esta razón deben ser alentados.
