A Message from the PresidentThe holiday season is upon us – a time for giving thanks and reflecting on those who mean the most to us. This edition of Memberworks pays tribute to our members and donors during Fiscal Year 2015-2016. The financial support provided by these generous individuals and businesses positively impacted the lives of the 90,000 people who participated in Oglebay Institute’s arts, cultural and nature programs last year.

Personal stories of families and individuals whose lives have been enriched by arts provide a first-hand look at the meaningful impact of OI. One such story is that of parents who were seeking to provide as many positive experiences as possible for their newly adopted daughter who had a difficult start in life. The couple enrolled their daughter in OI’s dance, art and theater classes and summer camps over the years. Nearly a decade later, the mother looks back and comments, “She has not only enjoyed them all very much but learned to love these arts in life!” The young girl is thriving and has enjoyed remaining active in the arts. About her creative spirit and love for the arts, her mother adds, “I don’t believe she would be like this without her fun and educational experiences from Oglebay Institute.”

Stories like these inspire the work that we do at OI. Your gifts make these things and so much more possible:

• In-school arts and nature programs to supplement classroom instruction;

• Adaptive art, dance and theater classes for special-needs youth;• Continual improvements to OI’s art, nature and cultural exhibits that

inspire and educate local residents and those who make Wheeling a travel destination;

• Inspiring classes for all ages in art, music, dance, theater, history and nature;

• Financial assistance for hundreds of children to attend our summer camps;

• Studio space, galleries, stages and resources that help artists develop their skills and share their work

Director of Museums, Christin Byrum, served as a member of the 2017 National Program Committee of the American Alliance of Museums. The National Program committee is composed of 35-40 individuals representing diverse professional expertise, regional affiliations and types of institutions that have an overview of the entire museum field. Working with Alliance staff, the Committee met October 13-14 in St. Louis, MO to evaluate 418 session proposals and make the final selection of programs that will provide the Alliance membership with the most current thinking on a range of subjects at the annual meeting, May 7-10, 2017 in St. Louis.

Golfers hit the links September 19 at the Wheeling Country Club to support Wheeling’s premier arts organization at the annual OI Golf Scramble. The event was sponsored by Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal and The Monteverde Group.

Oglebay Institute's Board of Trustees hosted the most successful Board Benefit to date August 26 at the Mansion Museum. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and more than 480 guests, the annual fundraiser garnered $37,869 for OI.

As a leader in arts education, Oglebay Institute conducted a professional development workshop for Ohio County K-8 teachers September 20 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. The workshop, presented through support from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History’s STEAM Power Grant Program, which is funded through the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, focused on the power of incorporating the arts across school curricula.

Held October 7-9 in conjunction with the popular fall festival, Oglebayfest, the Phil Maxwell Artists' & Gourmet Markets featured more than 80 vendors selling original crafts, fine art and specialty food items.

Oglebay Institute's School of Dance once again presented the Raising the Barre Dance Gala October 29, welcoming stakeholders to support OI's vibrant dance program. Sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Gary Glessner & Family, andMr. and Mrs. James Carson & Family, the Gala raised significant funds to provide the best training, resources and instructors for the school.

The Stifel Fine Arts Center celebrated Halloween October 22 with the lavish Shadows Ball costume party, presented in conjunction with the Visions & Shadows art exhibition.

More than 100 guests were entertained with a variety of sideshow acts by Kabarett Vulgare of Pittsburgh and live music by Tongue 'N Cheek. A costume contest, film screenings, raffles and a wicked menu of food prepared by our friends at Ye Olde Alpha were also part of the fun.

The Mansion Museum opened "Behold the Labour of My Hands" in October – a collection of Schoolgirl Samplers donated by Dr. Betty Jane McWilliams. The exhibit, open through January 8, demonstrates the educational role that samplers played in the lives of their young makers while showcasing extraordinary needle skills.

Oglebay Institute's Fall Play Tour visited 17 area elementary schools this year with a production of “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.”
