Jean Nouvel’s works are marked by a preoccupation with surfaces, textures, falls of light, and the visual framing of spac-es, that help transform the space into an animated arena for poetic expression. It demonstrates the interesting effects that can be achieved with the material using light sources. In the Arab World Institute, on the Left Bank of the Seine, Nou-vel devised a façade with thirty thousand light-sensitive metal diaphragms behind glass. Opening and closing the diaphragms were designed to control the penetration of light into the build-ing, but they also mimic the perforations of a mashrabiya, a kind of latticework screen common on the windows of Arabian buildings. In the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, Nouvel’s design concept refers to the existing landscape as arid and explains that this has given way for the design to evolve into fantasy. The design is a beau-tiful translation of the bazar’s in the middle east and the way light filters through it’s domed roof structures to the interiors.

The public space acting as an intimate embracement allowing the guests to engage in the views of the city.

The first central element the front wall engraved orifices illumi-nate with dramatic light and the scene is revealed in sharp detail, creating a sophisticated ambiance.

A second element, the east side window solution louvers, work like coves for the morning light and its transition to the stronger mid-day light, they can be turned on the vertical axis so the sys-tem will diffuse the light.

The veiled openings in the ceiling element’s purpose is to tras-mit a light path to the backwall. The idea behind the veiling is to subdue the light next to the engraved openings so the front wall won’t be overwhelmed with light instead working as a homog-enous wash.

The dark floor works like a reverse screen for the wall openings’ light projection.

The colored concrete idea is to demonstrate how softness can be applied to a hard material. The metal ceiling adds to the reflection of the texture.

The large opening in the back is a night sky observatory.

Finally the large window opening in the west side is a screen to the sunset and skyline interpretation.
