Dear Friends of Irish Culture,
Welcome to the 2018 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival! We
are proud to offer you one of the crown jewels of the festival
season here in Butte, Montana. This is one of the longest-run-
ning Irish Cultural celebrations in Montana, with this its 16th
year in Butte and 20th year in total.
Your An Rí Rá Committee has
worked hard to bring you the best in
Irish entertainment, workshops, his-
tory, literature, vendors and fun. While
our headliner presentations are nation-
ally and internationally known, you
will also have the opportunity to see
the finest musicians and dancers from
Montana and the region.
The founders of The Montana
Gaelic Cultural Society, in particular,
Tom Sullivan and Richard Newman,
are to be commended for their vision
and hard work in creating this organization. Their dream of
creating a “Montana Gaeltacht” that would preserve and pro-
mote Irish culture has served to create an atmosphere in which
this goal is being achieved.
This year, there are classes in Irish language and Irish dance.
We also have an author and lecture series on Irish history. Each
year, Montanans and other people from around the country of
Irish descent are celebrating their heritage by keeping it alive.
As you participate in and enjoy this year’s An Rí Rá, you
will hear the strains of traditional Irish music, and you will see
dancing that will give you great memories for years to come.
Thank you for attending the 2018 An Rí Rá Montana Irish
Festival. We hope you enjoy all the events we have to offer you,
and we hope you will tell your friends and family, so they can
enjoy it with you in the future.
Grab your lawn chair and umbrella and come join us and
enjoy An Rí Rá 2018.
FRANK WALSH
Welcome to An Rí Rá
Beginning in the “Missoula” years
and continuing to date, Dublin
Gulch is the only act to appear at
every Montana Gaelic Cultural Soci-
ety Irish Festival. Dubbed “The House
Band” by Butte favorite son Bubba Malo-
ney, the band present materials ranging
from traditional and contemporary Irish
folk songs to tunes from across the Celtic
spectrum to songs about their historic
Butte foundation. Their name comes
from one of Butte’s Irish neighborhoods.
The current quartet have been together
for nearly two decades. Founding mem-
ber Tom Powers hails from Butte and
fronts the band with the lion’s share of
lead vocals and adding bodhran. Walker-
ville’s multi-instrumentalist Mick Cava-
naugh provides guitar, mandolin, banjo,
and whistle along with backing vocals.
John Joyner from Missoula plays fiddle
and banjo and
sings back-
up vocals.
True “Butte
wannabe”
Jim Schulz of
Helena con-
tributes guitar,
mandolin,
bouzouki, and
harmony and
lead vocals.
He is also
responsible
for the band’s
expanding
repertoire of songs taken from the annals
of Butte’s colorful past. As in recent
years, Tom’s son Conor Powers will join
in on percussion at An Rí Rá.

GIRSA The “young girls” of Irish traditional music
Girsa, the “young girls” of Irish
traditional music, learned their
craft from their musician mothers
and honed their skills competing against
one another in music contests. Hailing
from Pearl River, New York and having
played together since their pre-teens, Gir-
sa represents a fusion of the traditional
music and songs of Ireland and modern
folk music. Since completing their educa-
tions, they now divide their time between
their professional careers and musical
performances.
The band consists of Pamela Geragh-
ty, Emily McShane, Blaithin Loughran,
and sisters Maeve Flanagan and Ber-
nadette Flanagan. Among them, they
play fiddle, accordion, guitar, tin whistle,
piano, bodhran, banjo, and mandolin.
They have recorded a number of
albums and have played at major festivals
including Milwaukee, Kansas City, and
Dublin, Ohio. When they make their
first appearance at An Rí Rá, they follow
literally and figuratively in the footsteps
of family friends and musical heroes,
Cherish the Ladies.

After twenty years of
taking their rollicking
show to adoring audi-
ences far and wide, The Elders
make their final An Rí Rá
appearances during their fare-
well tour. And as lead singer/
percussionist Ian Byrne puts
it, they intend to go out with a
sizzle, not a fizzle! Their songs
feature story lines with vibrant
narratives that explore history,
legends, tall tales and true-
life experiences. They deliver
them with unbridled passion,
energy, and fire and develop
an electric rapport with their
audiences.
Joining Byrne on their swan
song tour of summer Irish
festivals are: multi-instrumen-
talists and vocalists Steve Phil-
lips, Norm Dahlor and Brent
Hoad, drummer/percussionist
Kian Byrne (Ian’s son), and
fiddler Diana Ladio.
MUSIC
The Dillon Junior Fid-
dlers return to the
Montana Irish Festival
for the first time in five years.
The group has performed for
audiences large and small, lo-
cally and far afield since1983.
The musicians are aged
primarily from kindergarten
through eighteen and perform
with only limited adult accom-
paniment. The players learn
their material both through
private, individual lessons and
through participation and
rehearsal with the group. Over
the years, they have amassed
a large repertoire of tunes. As
usual, they will tailor their An
Rí Rá set appropriately for an
Irish audience.

One was born in Ireland
and spent much of
his childhood in
North America. One was
born in North America and
spent much of his childhood
in Ireland. Each was born to
a father who was a legend of
Irish folk music and followed
his father into “the fam-
ily business”, and each has
earned his own due respect in
the Irish music world.
Rory Makem was born in
Drogheda, Co. Louth and has
become a staple on the Irish
music scene. Over the years,
he has taken the stage with
his father Tommy Makem, in
various combinations with
his brothers and Mickey and
Liam Spain, and most recently
as a solo act. Rory has enter-
tained the crowds at An Rí Rá
many times.
Dónal Clancy is making his
first appearance at the Mon-
tana Irish Festival. He spent
his early years in Canada
before his father, the renowned
Irish balladeer Liam Clancy,
settled the family in An Rinn
(Ring), Co. Waterford. Dónal
was a founding member of
Danu, spent time as a member
of An Rí Rá favorite super-
group Solas, and recorded
and toured with his father
and cousin Robbie as part of
Clancy, O’Connell & Clancy.
Along the way, he developed
a reputation as the “go-to”
guitarist in Irish music circles.
Perhaps it was inevitable
that the two would eventu-
ally combine their talents
and pedigrees to continue the
legacy initiated by their fathers
six decades ago. Together they
comprise: Makem & Clancy
“The Next Generation”.

twenty years plying his craft there. He
is also no stranger to An Rí Rá, having
accompanied the Trinity Irish Dancers on
several of their many appearances here
as well as playing solo sets. Brendan is
known for the passion, poignancy, and
intensity of his well-crafted songs. For
this trip, Brendan brings three musician
friends, all with impeccable credentials,
to support his vocals and guitar: Patrick
Firth on piano and vocals, Brian Killeen
on bass and vocals, and Steven Rutledge

The Irish sport of road
bowling traces its roots
to the 17th Century.
Today it is centered in coun-
ties Cork and Armagh, but is
enjoying a revival elsewhere.
The sport involves throw-
ing an iron and steel ball, or
bullet, along a predetermined
course of country roads.
This year, a road bowling
tournament is a part of An
Rí Rá. The tournament
will be Saturday, with team
registration at 9 a.m. at the
Original mine yard, and the
course is set out over a mile
on the walking trail above
the Original. There will be a
demonstration and practice
time starting at 9:30 and the
tournament will start at 10
a.m. The course should take
between an hour and a half
and two hours to complete.
For safety’s sake competitors
must wear closed-toe shoes
and no small children or
strollers will be allowed on the
track.

A series of three lectures
is planned as part of
An Rí Rá for 2018.
The lectures are Friday,
August 10, at the Covellite
Theatre, 215 W. Broadway.
At 9:30 a.m., the series will
kick off with Bill Farley’s
lecture: “James A. Murray,
Butte’s Radical Irish Million-
aire.”
This is the little-known
account of Ireland’s greatest
success story in the American
West. Working alone and un-
aided, James A. Murray built
a multimillion-dollar empire
throughout the Rocky Moun-
tains and along the Pacific
Coast, all the while funding
radical organizations fighting
to free Ireland from England’s
tyrannical rule.
Next, from 10:30 a.m. to
11:15 a.m., will be Katy Mey-
ers’ lecture, “Pulling Strings:
The History and Use of the
Celtic Harp.” Meyers will out-
line the History of the Celtic
harp and conversely look at
Irish history through the lens
of harp music. Historical
vignettes will be followed by
harp music to describe each
aspect of the history.
Finally, from 11:30 to
12:15, Myles Maloney, Naoise
Waldron and Tanner Sholey
will discuss “Hurling: Ire-
land’s National Sport.” Their
lecture will trace the history
of hurling from its ancient
roots and cultural relevance
to its newfound growth and
success in western Montana.
It will also provide a look into
the championship wins for the
University of Montana hurl-
ing team.
The lectures are
Friday, August 10,
at the Covellite Theatre,
215 W. Broadway.
