From the Pastor’s Pen…..

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ at Grace, Grace, mercy and peace be yours from God, our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen! I hope you will read this newsletter very carefully and take to heart how marvelously God continues to bless the congregation at Grace. We have been busy this summer preparing for the arrival of a new vicar, Taylor Rister. We at Grace will be sharing Vicar Rister with 3 other congregations; St. Martin’s, New Jerusalem, and St. James. Since her internship will be a “timeshare”, we will need to remember to be patient as we await those times Vicar Rister will be at Grace. And as another NALC Annual Convocation has ended, we have a new Bishop. Pastor Dan Selbo from San Jose, California (St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church) was elected on the fourth ballot by the convocation in Indianapolis this month. Bishop-Elect Selbo had 326 votes, Pr. Eric Riesen had 211 and there were 4 abstaining votes. 271 votes out of 541 ballots were required to elect. I invite you to look at the latest edition of the NALC newsletter or go on-line and read the story (thenalc.org). Bishop John Bradosky will remain as a consultant and advisor in the NALC as he leaves the Bishop’s position he has held for the past 8 years. Bishop-Elect Selbo will enter his new position as Bishop of the NALC on October 1, 2019. Then we will celebrate Rally Day on September 8. New classes of study (which will be called “The School of Biblical Studies”) will start on Sunday, September 8, for all ages, including three classes for adults. A new pictorial directory will be published during the Advent season with all members having their photographs taken in Fellowship Hall on September 27 and 28. All members should have their photos taken as this is a congregational event for ALL members. No one should be excluded from the pictorial directory. This is very important!! As some do not realize how important a pictorial directory is….not only from members, but for those outside the congregation and especially for new members. One last word - and it is a personal one. As many of you already know, our family situation has been put through the fire this summer as Karen and I have court ordered custody of our grandson, Sybastian. He is our joy and it is wonderful to have him in our home and in the life of the congregation at Grace. Sometime next year, when the courts and the Department of Social Services determine, he will possibly leave us to return to his mother. But for now, He is with us and we thank all of you for your love and concern for our family. Without Christ, we know we have no hope. With your caring prayers, this road would have been much more difficult. From the bottom of our hearts we thank God for you and your patience and understanding. Praying that we greet September and the rest of 2019 with thanksgiving, love and grace! God is GOOD! All the time! Blessings! +Pastor Gil Gilbert

THE GRACE ADULT LUNCHES will begin again on Wednesday, September 18, at noon in Fellowship Hall. This is a time for any adults from Grace or the community to come together for a lunch prepared by Betty Wilfong and helpers, fellowship, and a time to win prizes at Bingo. The September lunch will be Club Sandwiches, Potato Salad, Ice Cream, Cookies, and drinks. All are welcome. THE CHURCH OFFICE will be closed Monday, September 2, in observance of Labor Day. It seems strange that we take off work to celebrate the fact that we have job opportunities, but I think we all welcome the day off! THANK YOU, SAINT JAMES, for such a fun and meaningful time together on Sunday, August 11. The Catawba Valley Luther League and many of our leaders were in high spirits as they experienced friendly competition in bowling at Pin Station. Following that adventure we convened at St. James for an exercise in learning to open and to close a meeting with prayer. By using the word PRAY, we learned to praise, repent, ask, and yield. A couple of brave youth volunteered to read their own words. Pastor Rhodes noted that the Bible teaches us that grand words are not the basis of a meaningful prayer as the Lord knows our needs even before we ask. The afternoon was closed with a good quantity of pizza! It is truly a blessing to watch our youth beginning to come together as a more cohesive group, bonding with one another and sharing Christian values. THE CATAWBA VALLEY LUTHER LEAGUE will gather at Mount Calvary, Claremont on Sunday, September 8, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Parents are being invited to attend this meeting, but a count from each church is needed prior to the meeting. Please let Stormy Shull know if you plan to attend. If you have not attended these gatherings before, this would be a great time to join in the fun. It will be an exciting gathering for all Youth in grades 6 through 12 to learn, worship, and fellowship together. Please plan to attend. THANK YOU for allowing me to take off a week from working in the Church Office to attend Lutheran Week and the NALC Annual Convocation in August. It was a marvelous experience, although this time there was some feeling of dissension in the room, which has not been present for years. But that was temporary and joy and excitement prevailed. It is always great to see old friends and make new ones. Before the event started, we took time to tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and that was very interesting. I will be happy to discuss the convocation with you at any time, if you so desire. - Kathy Hefner

THE FILM, "ALISON'S CHOICE" will be shown at the Carolina Theater, Hickory on Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30 PM. It is an extremely powerful film with a bold and much needed pro-life message. The film follows the story of Alison, who discovering she is pregnant by her dead-beat boyfriend, turns to abortion. In the clinic as she waits for her name to be called, she is faced with a big choice, to go through with it or to keep the baby. Amongst the receptionist, a counselor and other girls in the clinic all offering her advice she encounters a janitor. The two begin to talk and it becomes clear that he is no mere janitor but the living God, Jesus Christ who has come to plead for the life of her baby. When the nurse calls Alison’s name, what will she choose? Alison’s Choice is written, produced and directed by Bruce Marchiano, and he has done a fantastic job. The story is relevant and well written and whilst the subject of the film is emotional and intense, it features a lot of comedy throughout, which helps to carry the message and give the emotions a rest. The cast is brilliant with Chanel Marriott bringing the character of Alison to life, we feel her struggles and questions, making her a believable teenager going through this situation, many will be able to relate to her. Bruce Marchiano also puts in a stellar performance as Jesus (the janitor), boldly bringing across the message. The main theme of this film is abortion and pro-life and it will give people insight and a new understanding of abortion. There are many powerful scenes including where we see Jesus weeping as girls go in and have their babies terminated and we see Jesus show Alison her baby and what she will grow up to be like. It also touches on why there is suffering in the world, free will and the choices we make and it also really brings home how much Jesus suffered on the cross, how much pain He was in when He took all of our sins upon Him. Alison’s Choice is extremely powerful and the message in the film must be heard, it is very emotional, hard hitting and bold. Lives are sure to be changed and saved. -The Christian Film Review

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! On October 10, Franklin Graham with the Decision America Tar Heel State Tour will be at the L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory. More details will be in future newsletters and bulletins. WILL YOU CONSIDER SERVING AS A COUNSELOR for the Franklin Graham Decision America Tar Heel State Tour? The Christian Life and Witness Course (CLWC) will equip you with practical ways to tell others about Jesus Christ and pray with those who want to make a decision for Him—during the event in your city or on your own. Whether you’ve shared the Gospel many times or you’re new to witnessing, CLWC will help you share Jesus and deepen your own faith in Him. Choose one of the following dates when you would like to attend the Christian Life and Witness Course (no registration required), which is one of three simple steps necessary to become a counselor.

September 21 September 23 9AM – 12PM 6 – 9 PM Safe Harbor Viewmont Baptist Church 112 2nd Ave. SE 1246 2nd Street NE (HWY 127 N) Hickory, NC 28602 Hickory, NC 28601

At the session, you will receive an application to complete prior to the end of the session. You must attend the class and turn in the application at that time to be considered as a counselor. Unfortunately, not all applicants are guaranteed a position. During the class, you will also be given a website link to a form that will grant permission to complete a background check. This check is a critical part of the process, so that the ministry can provide the best environment for those who are making decisions for Christ. All counselor applicants will be notified of final decisions, and given instructions for next steps. Thank you for your heart to serve. We’re grateful for your willingness and your patience as you complete the application steps. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email [email protected].

A Thursday night banquet honored Bishop John Bradosky for his service to the Church. Bishop Bradosky is retiring and did not seek reelection. Bishop Selbo was installed as bishop during the closing worship of the Convocation, but his four-year term officially begins October 1. The Mission Festival that preceded the Convocation highlighted the NALC’s relationship with Lutherans in Ethiopia and Tanzania. The Rev. Dr. Alex Mkumbo, bishop of the Central Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, and the Rev. Yonas Yigezu, president of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, were featured speakers for the Mission Festival. They also brought greetings to the Convocation and took part in the installation service for Bishop Selbo. The Mission Festival also featured a variety of breakout sessions to equip members for mission. Other Elections: The Rev. Bassam Abdallah of Prospect, Kentucky, and Scott Kramer of Boerne, Texas, were elected to four-year terms on the Executive Council. The Rev. Jennifer Gold of Helotes, Texas, and the Rev. Leslie Haines of Fort Wayne, Indiana, were elected to the Court of Adjudication. 2020 budgets were approved. The Convocation approved a $2.2 million Operating Budget for the NALC. Budgets were also approved for the church’s designated funds: $723,000 for the Theological Education Fund (which includes the North American Lutheran Seminary); $197,500 for the Great Commission Fund; and $123,500 for the Disaster Response Fund. Most of the budgets anticipate spending some cash reserves. A new NALC Global Worker, the Rev. Heidi Punt of Christ United Lutheran Church in Granite Falls, North Carolina, was commissioned for service in Haiti with Sundouloi Ministries (SMI Haiti). Reports of the work of the NALC’s staff, teams, task forces, ministries and ministry partners were warmly received. Events preceding the Convocation were the Mission Festival, Braaten-Benne Lectures in Theology, Women of the NALC Annual Gathering and the Ventures in Youth Ministry Symposium. The Convocation and the events preceding it comprise the NALC’s annual Lutheran Week. Documents, photos and videos from the Convocation and other events of Lutheran Week are posted at lutheranweek.com. A few copies of the NALC NEWS for August are in the Narthex and contain a summary of events. VBS 2019 - SHERLOCK HOLMES MEETS THE AMAZING RACE MEETS SURVIVOR

A DAY AT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Actually this day started many months ago with Stormy Shull picking up the ball when a new director was needed, and then carrying it all the way to score a touchdown. I cheered her on by putting up two new vinyl signs that were given to us by Shannon Rodgers. When the first day came, no one could get passed Kim Parker at the registration/check-in table. With a name tag, a t-shirt, and a tribal buff in hand we went to eat some food that Helen Leatherman and Lynette Momier got ready for us. Shelly Scronce was busy putting together meal boxes that Alan Shull, Herb Travis, and Sheila Drum with Emily Bumgardner delivered to some of our shut-ins. With full stomachs, the adults left to go to their classroom to study the topic “What Marks Your Faith” led by Pastor Gil; as we read the Lord’s Prayer from a board. Each night some lines were missing so we were forced to memorize it. Vacation Bible School was just that, “Bible School”. Each night we had to name the mystery person using clues from the Bible, crafts, games, and special music. And then finding out who is the ultimate mystery person that is the reason we are here doing all of this. Then Trish Panek and Pat Deitz using their magic hands got us to making things. One night Quez Little showed us how to weave a real basket using reeds and make crosses using dried grapevines. My job was to find songs with clues such as “Who Built The Ark”, “Baby Moses In A Basket”, “Coat Of Many Colors”, “On The Road To Damascus”, ”One Rock One Shot”. During this time Sherlock Holms (Joe Momier) in his hat and pipe, with Dr. Watson (Herb Travis) in his lab coat and magnifying glass was walking around looking and studying clues. One night while studying Noah a hard rain came and then after the meeting we all saw a rainbow! While Frankie Crouse and Susan Setzer watched over the little ones, Cindy Bivens and Libby Travis danced in the kitchen to the song ”The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Then off we go to the church sanctuary where David Cortello and his guitar were eagerly waiting to teach us some songs. One night Cheyenne Jarrett brought her Trombone and played along. I wished everyone could have seen little Kailee dancing and enjoying those songs and how much fun Sharon Whalen had leading us in the movements to “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”. Everybody was smiling. Nicholas Rodgers must have had magnets in his pockets as he attracted Michael, Sabastian, and others to his side. Before we “voted”, Stormy was giving us more clues from the Bible and from her own heart. Our reward on the last night was to make s’mores with help from Johnny and Jane Moss. Our delivery of canned goods to The Corner Table came at a time when they were out of food and hungry people were waiting outside. Special thanks to Karen Gilbert who helped wherever needed and our “go to” guy Zachary Speagle. What a fantastic time with a great bunch of young people and devoted on-the-spot volunteers. God has blessed all of us!! - Ricky Bivens

NEW COVENANT LUTHERAN MISSION NEWS The mission continues to grow! Grace is the sponsoring congregation for this new mission and Pastor Gilbert is lending his guidance and experience from his years as being a mission developer to help New Covenant continue being established as an NALC Mission Congregation. The worship time will soon change to Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM as Pastor Gilbert and the New Covenant Leadership Team will be looking to call a Mission Developer/Pastor. Please continue to pray for the people of God at New Covenant Mission as Grace continues to support them with our love, prayers and financial support.

NOMINATIONS BEING RECEIVED As we plan for 2020, one of the urgent items on the calendar is to accept nominations to be placed on the ballot to serve on the Leadership Board for 2020. Elections will be held according to the Constitution on November 3. RALLY DAY IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 On September 8, all Sunday morning Learning Classes will gather for a new year of learning, fellowship and God’s Word as we celebrate Rally Day. There are classes for all ages, including three classes for adults. In addition, the weekly Thursday Bible studies, “Connections” (10:30 AM) and the Men’s Bible Study (7:00 PM) will resume. “Connections” will continue with the OT Books of the Torah and the Men’s Study will begin “An Ordinary Day with Jesus” by Philip Yancey. Everyone is invited to these two wonderful opportunities to be in God’s Word!

DO YOU CARRY YOUR UMBRELLA? We all have something to learn from this young girl. As a drought continued for what seemed an eternity, a small community of farmers was in a quandary as to what to do. Rain was important to keep their crops healthy and sustain the townspeople's way of life. As the problem became more acute, a local pastor called a prayer meeting to ask for rain. Many people arrived. The pastor greeted most of them as they filed in. As he walked to the front of the church to officially begin the meeting he noticed most people were chatting across the aisles and socializing with friends. When he reached the front his thoughts were on quieting the attendees and starting the meeting. His eyes scanned the crowd as he asked for quiet. He noticed an eleven year-old girl sitting quietly in the front row. Her face was beaming with excitement. Next to her, poised and ready for use, was a bright red umbrella. The little girl's beauty and innocence made the pastor smile as he realized how much faith she possessed. No one else in the congregation had brought an umbrella. All came to pray for rain, but the little girl had come expecting God to answer. -- Author Unknown

MISSION UPDATE – DAKOTA BOYS AND GIRLS RANCH

As the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch is a friend and Recognized Ministry of the NALC, we want you to know all about the good work your support makes possible. There may be a few things you don’t know about us. And, I believe you’ll find the six Ranch facts below both enlightening and encouraging. For instance, did you know . . .?

The Ranch’s Dakota Memorial School is the only fully accredited school system in North Dakota that’s not a public school.

Many of our children were barely passing their classes before coming to the Ranch. Yet, two out of five made the honor roll last semester, while meeting the same rigorous requirements you’ll find at any public school.

Many of our kids never had a birthday party until they came to the Ranch.

This year, many of our students returned to their original schools to graduate with friends and peers.

We care for and cherish a herd of twenty-three horses. The children are encouraged to ride and make friends with the horses. They often experience healing as they ride and work with a horse.

Ranch thrift stores process more than eleven million donated items a year. Sales at our stores provide an important source of income to help kids.

I hope you learned something you didn’t know about why the Ranch is such an incredible resource for children who have struggled to find peace, stability and success in life. Children like Sara . . . Sara’s mom was young, single and unable to provide for her. Violence and instability were constants in their home. No wonder Sara was angry, verbally abusive, disrespectful of authority, and hamstrung by learning disabilities that made school a daily battle. At the Ranch, Sara experienced a very different kind of environment. Because our team recognized her struggles — and also her many strengths as a unique child of God — she responded positively. Sara says, “It didn’t feel safe at my old school. But at the Ranch, if I need more help or things aren’t going well at home, I can tell someone and feel safe. I don’t have to worry that more bad things will happen because I told.” Sara has been with us for about a year now. Her improved attitude, behavior and school performance have earned her the admiration of her peers, who increasingly see her as a role model. There’s a lesson here: With your prayers and partnership in this work, even a deeply wounded child can find healing, academic success and spiritual growth. Thank you for your continued support! To learn more about their work or to partner with them in ministry, please visit dakotaranch.org.
