Summer Assignments Looking for summer assignments or Fall Supply

Lists? You will find them on the SDSC Smart Phone APP or under the "For Parents" Tab on our

website. Have your child do a little reading & math each day… Keep them learning!

BUSY AS BEES AT SDSC! During August bees slow down gathering nectar and begin busily preparing their hives for the winter months ahead. At SDSC we are as busy as bees preparing for the start of the school year! We are facing many challenges as a school community during this global health

crisis and are taking active steps to ensure that we safely deliver to your children the very best education. Thank you to all of our new and returning families for placing your trust in us at SDSC!

Important School Supply Notices

Please note that required items may be revised or added

to the Fall Supply Lists once school reopening plans are

finalized and announced. Also, there may be items on your

child's list that are out of stock or in short supply due to

Covid-19 related supply issues. Don't worry! Do the best

you can. We understand and will make adjustments where

necessary Introducing AmazonSmile!

SDSC is now participating in AmazonSmile, a fundraising program offered by Amazon.com. It's easy to participate and you only need to sign-up once! Once you activate AmazonSmile, a percentage of most of your purchases will be donated to SDSC. You can even use the SmartPhone App. Please note: this program replaces the Amazon Associates Program, which is no longer valid.

Even MORE Chromebooks!

SDSC has acquired 40 more Chromebooks! The

total number of available devices to our students is

now 265! Pandemic or not, technology plays a

central role in our curriculum. These Chromebooks

will be invaluable resources for students for many

years to come.

Archdiocese Publishes Comprehensive Plan for School Reopening

After many weeks of reviewing safety

standards and guidelines, the Catholic School Reopening Council has set forth

general guidelines for returning to school both in person and remotely. More specific details for SDSC will be forthcoming. Once

our plan is finalized, reviewed and approved by all appropriate Archdiocesan, State, and local authorities, we will share it with all of our families. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work together to ensure the health, safety and

well-being of everyone.

Books, Books and More Books!

Nearly every week since the beginning of the year, boxes of brand new books have

been delivered to SDSC! Hundreds of books - all donated - for the school library. In

addition to the books, came a labeling machine and a large new bookshelf for

displaying featured books. This massive expansion of the SDSC library is the work

of one generous Guardian Angel and SDSC Grandma: Lillian Markowitz. We are so

grateful for her generosity! Both the students and librarian, Sr. Lucia, will be so

excited to check out all of the new releases when we return to the Library!

SUMMER NEWS #3

St. Vincent de Paul Back to School Drive Although there is uncertainly about students being in the physical classroom, we are still collecting back to school supplies. Students will need: pens, pencils, crayons, folders, composition books, glue sticks, wide ruled loose leaf paper, wide ruled spiral notebooks, scissors, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, rulers, erasers, back packs, tissues and lunch boxes. Any donation is gratefully accepted. Please drop off items where St. Vincent de Paul food items are collected. Thank you for your support!

What To Expect in 2020-21

There's a lot of uncertainty in the world right now,

and of course that extends to schooling. We don't

have all of the specifics yet about our return to

school, but we can confidently tell our families

some of what they can expect in 2020-21.

Uncompromised Learning

• Expect the same high academic standards

that distinguishes SDSC from other schools. We

are not lowering our expectations of what our

students will learn and accomplish.

• A full five days of structured teaching

whether your children are in school or at home.

• A well-defined class schedule used

simultaneously at home and in school.

• Homework and "in class" assignments clearly

posted on Google Classroom or See-Saw.

• Frequent communication from the School

Office to keep you informed about scheduling

and learning.

Safe Learning Environment

• You can expect that our building

surfaces will be thoroughly sanitized and

cleaned throughout the day and at the end of

the day.

• Safe distancing throughout the building and

available personal protective equipment.

• Procedures for detecting and isolating sick

individuals.

Emotional and Physical Well Being

• Frequent scheduled breaks so that students

are not sitting at desks or in front of

computers for extended periods of time.

• "Mask breaks," snack/hydration breaks and

recess, etc.

Smart Tuition statements for fully enrolled students were recently sent out to our families. If you have not received your statement or have any questions regarding it, please feel free to call the school office.

Joan with her Our Lady of Fatima Statue in the Church Directory 2006.

Joan’s original statue today, displayed in our Rectory

Joan and John Speirs were active parishioners of our

St. Columba parish family. Many may not know that Joan was

the first parishioner to start the visitations of the Our Lady of

Fatima statue in homes on October 4, 1981.

This beautiful tradition has been faithfully and

lovingly carried on by our parishioner Susan D’Agostino.

With John’s passing, back in June, the family has graciously

entrusted Joan’s original statue of Our Lady of Fatima to the

Rectory Office. We thank the Speirs, D’Agostinos and all our

Parish families for their prayers and support of our St. Columba

faith community.
