So – what really is Cleantech? It‘s the striving for an alliance between Technology and Nature, rather than

exploiting the latter like in the first periods of industrialization. The term Cleantech thus embraces all (hightech)

methods, which either reduce the production of harmful emissions or work in a more resource-saving way.

The Cleantech Industry

Overview (2/2)

• Temporarily #2 Investment-Sector in USA in 2006

• Pure-play Cleantech funds (KleinerPerkins, Khosla Ventures, nth power, etc.)

• EUR 1.9 billion invested in Cleantech Ventures in Europe since 2003

• UK and Germany as the most active nations for Cleantech investing

• CVN estimates about 900 to 1100 new venture investments in Europe until 2010 totalling

between EUR 4.8 billion and EUR 10 billion in capital invested

• Emergence of dedicated Cleantech funds (ETF, Zouk, Emerald, Demeter, Capricorn, etc.)

The US are leading the Cleantech Wave

Europe is catching up

Germany could emerge as Cleantech Country #1 in Europe

• #1 worldwide in Solar, Wind, Bio-Diesel, Bio-Gas

• Top Cleantech success stories and exits

• …but limited number of funds with a Cleantech orientation,

• …UK / EU based funds do few deals in D/A/CH

Investment in a Promising Market (1/2)

Positive development of the Cleantech industry

– Continuous market growth due to limited raw materials, structural deficits in the supply of energy, the issue of climate change, etc.

– Increasing market volume of € 60 bn. in 2006 to € 400 bn. in 2030 predicted

– World market share of German companies in the fields of Cleantech up to 30 %

– „German companies already offer solutions for global issues by today.“ Sigmar Gabriel, German minister for the environment

Favourable political conditions

– Acceptance of the „Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz“ (feed-in tariffs for alternative energy over the next 25 years) in Germany, similar laws in many other countries

– Guaranteed compensation for eco-energy (favourable abatement conditions / sales-conditions for eco-energy provider)

– Germany is the leading R&D location of environmental technologies

Investment in a Promising Market (2/2)

The opportunity for Venture Capital in Cleantech

– The development stage is completed in many fields, the stage of commercialisation has begun

– US-Market: $ 3 bn. Invested in the Cleantech industry in the last three years

– Germany is catching up! Aprox. € 450 M. invested in Cleantech companies in 2005

continuous increase anticipated

– The interest of independent fund-managers is rises, but a lack in the focus on Cleantech entails risks due to limited knowledge in that field

– Strong deal-flow: Up to 200 financing requests at leading venture capital companies

– Excellent exit-potential

• Via trade-sales: Leading energy- and technology companies (BP, GE, Shell, Siemens, etc.) focus more and more on Cleantech

• Via IPO: Excellent performances at stock exchanges of Cleantech shares after listing
