The Quiet Place Chapel

Food & Fellowship—Last Sunday featured two events offering food and fellowship. Our Catholic Daughters held a Communion Breakfast featuring Fr. Sean Magaldi as a speaker. In the evening, the Columbiettes and Knights of Columbus hosted a Beer, Wine and Cheese Party.

It was the desire of Fr. James Maltese to construct or renovate a chapel that would be geared for Adoration. The chapel would be a quiet place where people could spend time with God in prayer. Fr. Maltese died in 2016, leaving a donation to be used for this purpose. Fr. Maltese’s wish is now a reality. What used to be the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent Chapel is now The Quiet Place Chapel, located in our Parish Center. Renovation of the chapel included new flooring, spackling and painting, a new altar, tabernacle, statues, Stations of the Cross, candle holders, podium, updating of the confessional and sacristy and more. Adoration will be held in the held on Wednesday, April 10th from 7:30 to 9:00 PM (not April 3rd as reported in last week’s bulletin). We will then resume our First Wednesday Adoration, every first Wednesday of the month from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.

A New Assignment Fr. Sean Magaldi will be moving to a new assignment at the end of June. Bishop John Barres has named him the new Vocations Director for the dio-cese.Please keep Fr. Sean in your prayers as he steps up to this new challenge.

From the Pastor’s Desk As I was preparing for the homily for Mass this Sunday, I was enlightened by these words from a book I am reading entitled “Things Hidden, Scripture as Spirituality,” by Richard Rohr: “God’s love is constant and irrevocable; our part is to be open to it and let it transform us. There is absolutely nothing we can do to make God love us more than God already does, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to make God love us less.” This simple but powerful insight is the background of the Gospel at Mass today that presents us with the account of the prodigal son. What is inspiring to see is not only how the father’s love changed the son but, even more, how the father’s love never wavered. There is no mention of disappointment nor is there even a hint of anger. First the father deals with a son who is purely self centered. This son is so anxious to get on with life without his father that he asks for and is given the inheritance he would have received at his father’s death. We could question why the father accedes to this demand, but that would weaken the point Jesus wants us to understand about God’s forgiveness. Both the prodigal and elder son are self-centered young men. When the younger son realizes what a mistake he made he comes back humble, hopeful and surely full of guilt. His hope is not for forgiveness, but just for a place with his father’s servants. Obviously the father is good to the servants. How overwhelmed this prodigal son had to be when his father ran to meet him as he approached the homestead. There were no words of reproach or rebuke, only the embrace of life-giving love and forgiveness. He had to think, “Is my father really forgiving me? Am I really being taken back as his son? Is it true that I will not be punished and made to feel guilty?” The Sacrament of Confession is God’s gift to welcome us ever more deeply into His life. Can I trust myself to trust God? That is the essence of this parable. God’s forgiveness is pure, transforming us from individuals who feel guilty and unsure into His beloved sons and daughters. More often than not we have the attitude of the elder son in this parable. He gets less press in this parable, but he more often than not reflects how we see ourselves falsely through God’s eyes, a vision that is wrong, disastrous, and oppressive. The elder son sees himself as deserving of his father’s attention and largesse. He is not obedient out of love, but out of self-centered duty that will guarantee a reward. Am I forgiven like the prodigal son because I confess my sins, say my act of contrition, and do my penance? That is only the prologue to what this sacrament of healing is all about. We are forgiven first and foremost because we are God’s beloved children. Over and over again the line from last Sunday’s reading makes this so clear: “While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) God is pleased with our words of sorrow. But do we hear the voice of His love in the words of absolution? “God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has

reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” I am uplifted and awed each time I have the privilege and joy of praying these words over those who come to confession. “May God give you pardon and peace.” Those words of prayer are answered immediately as these words follow: “and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” These words impart the incredulous embrace the prodigal son experienced when he heard his father say: “”Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began.” The old adage “To err is human, to forgive is divine” is so true. The challenge, joy, and privilege we have as forgiven sons and daughters of God is to be forgiving of one another. Every day we pray in the Our Father: “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” It is not until we experience and trust in God’s life-giving forgiveness that we can live out this prayer. Forgiveness taken to heart is transforming. It transforms guilt, fear, and doubt into joy, compassion, understanding, a desire for reconciliation with one another. Last week I quoted the preface to the First Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation. These words from that preface once again highlight the powerful point Jesus makes in today’s Gospel: “For you do not cease to spur us on to possess a more abundant life and, being rich in mercy, you constantly offer pardon and call on sinners to trust in your forgiveness alone. Never did you turn away from us, and, though time and again we have broken your covenant, you have bound the human family to yourself through Jesus your Son, our Redeemer, with a new bond of love so tight that it can never be undone.” The Sacrament of Confession renews and refreshes us with this “bond of love so tight that it can never be undone.” We are always in God’s heart and always on His mind. He is far more than the gentle, humble, forgiving father in this parable. “God’s love is constant and irrevocable; our part is to be open to it and let it transform us. There is absolutely nothing we can do to make God love us more than God already does, and there is absolutely nothing we can do to make God love us less.” The Sacrament of Penance reminds us of how far we are immersed in the love and life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Do I trust myself to trust in God?

Consider contributing to Outreach by donating non-perishable food items in the white bins at the church exits or through financial contributions. Frozen or refrigerated items may be donated if brought to the Outreach Office during office hours, Monday through Friday from 9:15 AM to 3:00 PM. Help Those in Need in our Diocese—There is no organization or body on Long Island that provides the breadth and depth of spiritual and social services to so many individuals and families as the Catholic Church. You can support the work of the Church on Long Island by giving to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Donate Much Needed Baby Items to teen mothers residing in Mercy House.

Regulations for Abstinence and Fasting during Lent All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59, inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. The obligation to do penance and to observe the appointed penitential season is a serious one. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse. A more serious reason is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence.

More information on all the above in this bulletin.

St. Patrick’s

Lenten Blood Drive Thursday, April 4th

from 4:00 to 9:30 PM in Canning Hall

Do something amazing! Save a life! Give blood!

The experience of suffering and of the cross touches all mankind; it touches the family too. How often does the journey become wearisome and difficult! Misunderstandings, conflicts, worry for the future of our children, sickness and problems of every kind. . . At times of trouble, when our families have to face pain and adversity, let us look to Christ’s cross. There we can find the courage and strength to press on; there we can repeat with firm hope the words of Saint Paul: “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Rom 8:35,37). - Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Join us for Stations of the Cross

Friday Nights During Lent at 8:00 PM (With the exception of Friday, March 29th due to our XLT Holy Hour with Ike Ndolo.)

This Lenten Season, our Junior Catholic Daughters and Folk Group will be collecting much needed items for teen mothers and their babies in Mercy House. Mercy House has been providing shelter and comprehensive services to Suffolk County’s homeless teen girls and their babies for 33 years. The goal is to help these young women break the cycles of abuse, poverty and dependence so they can return to their communities and live healthy independent lives. Below is a wish list of items needed by mothers and babies:

Junior Catholic Daughters will be collecting items at the 5:00 PM Saturday and 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM Sunday Masses. Items may also be dropped off at the Learning Center Building (gray modular behind school). Please call Patty or Mary to schedule a drop off at 631-780-6313, until April 15th.

baby toys, clothing sizes 0 to 24 months.

Moms: Deodorant, hair brushes/hair ties, feminine products,

“May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need.” - Pope Francis

Almsgiving in Lent

During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms. Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need—

whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual needs. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days,

please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry and consider sharing your gifts with them. One good way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help feed

people in our community each year through both Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach Centers.

Pray for Our Priests Please remember to keep our priests in your prayers. This week we ask that you pray especially for the following priests from our diocese: March 31st—Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski April 1st—Rev. Bruno Swiatocha & Rev. Robert Scheckenback April 2nd—Rev. Francis McMullen & Rev. Richard Donovan April 3rd—Msgr. John Tutone & Rev. Donald Gannon SJ April 4th—Rev. Jerzy Bres & Rev. Gerard Gordon April 5th—Rev. Daniel Neyoh & Msgr. In this audio talk, Matthew Leonard focuses on the new idea of love proclaimed by Christ and how it gives meaning to human suffering, penance, and ultimately death. Sounds a bit dark, doesn't it? But it's not! By looking at these issues we'll discover the secret to how we can "Rejoice in the Lord always" (Phil 4:4) just like St. Paul, no matter what happens.

Discrimination Against Christians of All Ages Continues

Ohio High School Student Suspended for Sharing Bible Verses: A Lebanon, Ohio high school student said, "On Thursday when I got to school, I saw that there were (gay) pride flags, posters around my school. And I felt the need to write down some Bible verses so I could put them around my school ... around the lockers, the walls." She didn't know she needed permission to post things, "because people do it a lot, putting Post-It notes on people's lockers. So, I just did it." "The next day. I got called to the office and there is a letter that says I have in-school suspension...because of ‘abuse of others, disrespect, rudeness' because I put Bible verses up 'targeting the GSA organization.’ She explained, "I did not know what the GSA (Genders & Sexuality Alliance) was or meant." ... "I asked (the principal) why anytime Jesus or God or anything like that gets brought up at school, it gets taken down straight away. But we can put gay & pride stuff all over the school and not have it taken down and people can talk about it. But when you talk about God or Jesus, you just get put down and you are not allowed to talk about it.” California Orders 84-year-old to Stop Bible Study in Vets Home: The California Department of Veterans Affairs is threatening to evict widow Artis Breau from her California Veterans Home if she continues to hold Bible studies. "For much of the past decade, Artis has volunteered with the chaplaincy program and led Bible studies in the Home," said the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI). Her volunteer status was suspended when one resident said he had trouble sleeping after a conversation with her about heaven and hell. "CalVet's treatment of this widow is shameful," said PJI. "Throughout this process, we have been deeply disturbed not only by the lack of Constitutional guidelines, ineptitude, and lack of due process in the investigation, but even more by the notion that discussing religious views on the eternal state of the soul is somehow elder abuse or emotional abuse." ... "This shocking attack from the State against our client's exercise of religious convictions is deeply disturbing." (wsfa.com,3/14/19;townhall.com,3/14/19;fulcrum7.com,

Children & Family Reflection:

Attention Level 2 Students: For your convenience, copies of the cards on which you write your gospel reflections will be included in the bulletin most Sundays. Feel free to use the form below and to make copies. Your reflection may be dropped into the collection basket as your gift to our parish. (Please provide your first and last name. Only first names will be used in the bulletin.)

Did you know that the St. Patrick’s bulletin is printed at no cost to our parish each week? Not only that, our parish receives a part of the advertising commission. So please frequent the fine establishments that advertise in our bulletin! If your business could use a shot in the arm, consider advertising in the bulletin. Approximately 3,500 people attend Mass at St. Patrick’s each weekend, most of whom live and shop in the Smithtown area. It’s an easy way to reach thousands of area families with information about your business. For information on how to advertise in our bulletin, call Frank Capanzano at 631-987-0064 or 1-800-524-0263.

Our bulletin company, J.S. Paluch is now printing our bulletin in color at no cost to us and with no reduction in our bulletin advertising commission.

Don’t miss the opportunity to advertise your business in full color!

The St. Patrick’s Bulletin: A Great Place to Advertise

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

1. Before Jesus answers the Pharisees, he pauses to give them time to think about what he said. Describe a time when you were given time to rethink before you made the wrong decision. 2. Recall a time when your mistakes were not held against you. 3. Recall a time when you judged someone harshly. Who helped you to see that person in a different light?

Jesus is king to the woman in the story even though she has done something wrong. When have you been kind to someone who has done something wrong.
