    A NEW MORNING

This is going to be the hardest album for me to write about. We made it at a highly difficult and unstabletime for the band and if Im honest, theres a part of me that sometimes thinks maybe we shouldnt havemade it at all. Im not disowning the music, simply pointing out that the reaction to the record wasmortally wounding and led to the spiral of decline and to the inevitable split of the band.

I think with this album we were trying to completely destroy our own myth, to kind of disown our ownlegacy and start again, to tear up the rule book which we had so carefully written for ourselves. Thispressure to re-invent the band eventually led to its implosion as we searched in vain for an escape route.

Its a shame that we couldnt see the work more objectively as some of the songs recorded during thisperiod were real gems but in our mania to disown ourselves, we disowned some of our strengths.

I was determined to approach the whole writing process very differently this time so I rented a smallcottage deep in the Surrey countryside where I could be away from the temptations and distractions ofLondon. Every week Id load up my car with my manual typewriter and bags of food from Tesco andescape to its bucolic isolation. The location was key in determining the hazy, pastoral mood of much thealbum and was the stage on which I played the role of the melancholic loner, writing miniature pieceslike Morning and Oceans on my 4 track, a lifetime away from the fury and bombast of The LondonSuedes public persona. Richard and Neil would send me demos in the post and I would chip away atthem. Songs like the criminally ignored Cheap and the drifting, elegiac Simon were created this way;beautiful fragments of the album that never was.

By the time we came to record the album in Rockfield, the whole direction had been confused as weattempted to brutally graft these gentle, melancholic pieces onto electronica-inspired rhythm tracks. Itdidnt work and we scrapped the album completely.

The summer ended and I relocated back home to my new house on the border of Notting Hill andBayswater, ironically just a stones throw away from the flat where I wrote the lyrics to The Drowners.

With a change in location came another change in mood as we started to deviate from the originalblueprint and write edgy, guitar rock again, conceiving a lot of it in my music room at the top of thehouse looking out over the always inspiring skyline of London. I suppose its telling that what I nowconsider the finest song on the album, Obsessions, is a simple return to what we knew best.

Sadly, what we failed to realise was that half of the great songs from this period we had blithely exiled asb-sides and hidden tracks. Oh well, if ifs and ands were pots and pans....

Knowing how this ends, its difficult to know how to end this. It always seemed like a strangely unfittingway to end the career of a band like The London Suede and I think that this slow fade after A NewMorning made us want to redress this and re-write our history and ultimately, subconsciously led to theband reforming seven years later.

A New Morning, with all its faults and at times because of them, remains an honest and intenselyhuman document.

Picking poppies in the skyDripping as the world went byLicking lollies in the sunMelting like your sugar love, oh

You, you were my oxygenYou, were my winter sunYou were my only oneOh, you, you were my oxygen

Painting pictures in the grassPeeking through the broken glassEating starfruit on the streetBut it never did taste sweet

So I sit and ask the skyAsk it where it all went wrongCos all these people in my lifeTheyve disappeared like oxygenTheyve disappeared like oxygen

    You were my oxygen

And were all refugeesWalking in circlesDragging our feetWiping the windows hoping to please

All refugeesStanding at the traffic lightsThreading through the hostile carsStaring with our almond eyesNot allowed in certain bars

Yes were all refugeesDrifting through doorwaysWalking the streetsSeeking asylum safe from diseaseWere all refugees

Wearing other peoples clothesThreading through parked motorbikesWhere were going no one knowsSubjects of department files

Yes were all refugeesWiping the windowsHoping to pleaseNo one belongs and no one believesYes were all refugees

Yes were all refugeesLiving in piecesDrifting like leavesIn this graffitiIn this disease yes were all refugees

From Madagascar to IndianaFrom out of Hong Kong to the outskirts of LondonOut from Manila to Eastern EuropeTheres cardboard cities drifting west out of the sunOut from the borders to Leeds and BradfordFull static silence on the borders of BahrainFrom downtown Boston to Central GlasgowTheyve had enough down by the banks down by the Seine
