Working Together119th Anniversary Celebration

On June 16th, PWH will celebrate 119 years in the community; we will also recognize our partners who have worked with us to provide services to our clients, as we continue to assist men recovering from alcoholism and substance abuse. Reflecting on the past year, it has presented us with many challenges and difficult decisions. By the time this article is in print, we expect to have closed on the sale of one of our residences. Many of the clients have preferred the agency’s apartments to the residences, but we are hopeful that in the future those residential beds will be transferred into beds in our apartment program. We have also seen a decrease in occupancy because of the assistance provided by the Shelter Plus Care Program.

The sale of the residence and the decrease in occupancy, however, have not impacted the quality of our services. PWH’s goal continues to be to provide the highest quality care possible for our clients. As we continue to review our strategic plan and our options for the future, we will consider collaboration or merger. Looking ahead, we see many possibilities! Our goal is to continue to be a viable agency serving and healing the community. Glen SmithExecutive DirectorPathway Houses of Rochester

P.S.Thank you to our friends for their continued support.

We Look Ahead

Turning the corner on a new year always brings a sense of renewal and optimism for what lies ahead. The same is true for Pathway Houses, as we celebrate 119 years and head into our 120th year of operation. We are proud of our heritage and thankful for our many strengths. Longevity in our service to the Rochester community speaks to both the need for and success of our organization.

There have been many changes to the agency since it started as the People’s Rescue Mission and we know that the agency will continue to evolve. For example, because of the increased demand for apartment style supportive living, we have decided to sell one house at University Avenue. We are meeting with other agencies in the Rochester area to explore ways in which we may partner allowing us to offer a more coordinated continuum of services to our clients. Additionally we are pursuing other forms of funding and exploring ways to tap into local resources aligned to our mission. We also know that an essential ingredient for our success is our people-our staff, our community and most importantly our clients who depend on and represent the outcome of our collective efforts.

So we are optimistic, optimistic about what lies ahead for Pathways and optimistic that our clients will continue to benefit from our services and succeed in moving to a substance free lifestyle within our communities.

In closing, let us reflect on this quote from Helen Keller, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”

Sincere thanks to the Pathways staff, our board, and the Rochester community for your continued support.

As we celebrate our years of service to the community, we continue to strive to work toward our mission. One of empowering individuals to take responsibility for their lives. A letter from U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand(D-NY) recognizing the event reads:

Alumni News

In May the agency held an alumni meeting attended by staff and former clients. The men discussed their current involvements and shared some comments about their experience at Pathway Houses:

Isaac B.-“Pathways was and is a new life, and a whole new beginning.”Freddie B.-“Pathways was an opportunity for me to grow not just in a recovery perspective, but as a man. The support of the team assisted in instilling the missing structure and discipline back to my life.”Ricky M.-“I was able to develop into a responsible, accountable individual, doing what I need to do for myself.”James W.-“Pathways offered me the opportunity for expansion. A graduated level of freedom and responsibility; support and community for expanding development.”Ron W.-“It was a brand new start to a brand new life, one day at a time.”

We wish all of or alumni continued success and look forward to hearing from them, sharing their hope strength and experience. Please contact the administrative office at 232-4674 with your stories.
