CLUB NOTES Thank you all who played and supported the “Yes We Are” Open! We had 102 players with almost half members and half non-mem- bers. The course looked great and Mother Nature finally came through with a beautiful weekend. We received many compliments about everything here at Creekside – food, course, service... I was very proud of my team! As many have already used our new system to get range balls. We now have buckets of balls in the outside service area. You may pick up as many as you need whenever you want. The change in procedure was made for a cou- ple of reasons. First, we want to know who is on the range and when. Second, of course the balls are included in your membership, but with outside play, we can capture some in- come from the vistors that come to play our fine club. So, just a little change in procedure. I’m sure it will just take a little getting used to but should be better for everyone. SAVE THE DATES! The one club in your bag that ac-counts for 40% of your strokes ina round of golf is the one thatmost amateur golfers never haveprofessionally fit to their game.If you enjoy three putting thenstop here the fitting is not foryou. If on the other hand youhate them then a fitting is one ofthe quickest ways to reducethem.

During this months special wewill look at putter head design.Does the way the head isweighted on your current putterhelp or hurt your game? Lengthwhich effects eye position. Whatare you really seeing vs. whatyou think you see. Lastly lie. Isthe putter toe up or down send-ing the ball off line or settingflush assisting you with more on-

line putts.

This months putter evaluation andfitting special is only $20.00which for the month of April willinclude all adjustments needed.

I see fewer putts in your future.

The golf season is upon us and hopefully the goodweather will follow. As I write to you at the end ofMarch we are leaving behind another very wetmonth. I’m hoping that our weather pattern isgoing to change enabling us to increase our mow-ing and maintenance. However, when tempera-

tures begin to increase encouragingthe growth of the grass yet it is toowet to mow, we begin to spraygrowth regulators on the fairways. These products help slow the growthof the grass and suppress the seedheads from annual bluegrass. It maygive the fairways a yellow hue for ashort period of time as it slows thegrowth however, it really encouragesroot growth which creates a health-ier plant able to withstand heat stressin the summer.

As we enter April I would like to discuss a few vari-ous topics as you begin to dust off your clubs andre-engage the golf swing. If you recall two of our more famous coaches in UShistory were Vince Lombardi and John Wooden. They both characterized and demanded the needto follow “The Fundamentals” as they taught theirplayers. I would like to remind you of the “TheFundamentals” golfers participate in with coursemaintenance. 1. Repair ball marks properly. I would like to em-phasize “properly”. When a ball mark is correctlyrepaired it should be almost unnoticeable, not abare spot of dirt. When repaired correctly the ballmark recovery is speeded up significantly, whichmeans a nicer playing surface for everyone.

2. Replace all divots. A divot that is replace willheal within a couple days. They do grow backvery quickly! Please take the time after your shotespecially on par 3’s to replace your divot. Ourcrew will continue to sand seed as needed how-ever, it takes over 2 weeks for the seed to fully ma-ture in good conditions.

3. Keep power carts away from greens. This isjust good golf course etiquette. It definitely helpsreduce compaction and general wear and tear onthe grass.4. Protect the cup. The goal of golf is to get theball into a 4” cup. Please protect the edges of thecup for other golfers by “carefully” replacing thepin back into the cup. Never use your club to geta ball out of a cup.

5. Rake the bunker “properly” and put the rakeback. Again, properly is the key word. After hit-ting your shot out of a bunker you should proceedto rake the location of the shot along with all ofyour foot prints as smoothly as possible. The rakeshould be replaced back in the bunker.

6. Please discard broken tees and cigarettes. Bro-ken tees and cigarette buts don’t biodegrade anddisappear. Please discard them into the garbagecan or tee caddy.

7. Play ready golf. Although this doesn’t haveanything to do with the maintenance of the courseit definitely is a fundamental that needs reminding.

I’m sure that when these great coaches of the pastreiterated the fundamentals it wasn’t the most pop-ular time of practice. However, when these funda-mentals were executed properly it made a greatteam. I believe the same is true with a golf course.By following these fundamentals we can havesmoother greens and a better kept course for allplayers.

Enjoy the season,

JD ClarizioCreekside Golf Club Golf Course Superintendent GCSAA
