Sponsorship rules allow you to apply for travel funding for a conference prior to your acceptance, or even submission of a paper, so if you plan to attend or are thinking about attending an event, you can get provisionally awarded based on whether you receive acceptance to your selected conference. In cases that are gen-uine emergencies (as outline in the application’s guidelines), you may apply for emergency funding by the 20th of every month, although there are less funds allo-cated for emergency applications in general, so it is usually better to make the main cycle deadline if you can. If you have any question, please contact Patrick Daleiden GPSA Vice President/[email protected] and Chair of the Sponsorship Committee or Rebecca Boulton/[email protected], GPSA Manager.

Now that we are a few weeks into school starting, we hope that everyone is settled in. We wanted to bring attention to the lactation rooms on campus that are here to fulfill your needs. There are eight lactation rooms on campus available for all faculty, staff, and students. All rooms are open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm; except the Lied Library location (see Li-brary for hours) and the Rebel Wellness Zone (Monday-Friday 8am-7pm).

The goal is for mothers to be able to pump/feed in a quiet, clean, and private space and to make it easier for moms to continue to express milk after returning to school and/or work.

Locations:

The Center for Social Justice - Houssels House Jean Nidetch Women’s Center - SSC-A, Room 255 Student Recreation and Wellness Center - Rebel Wellness Zone (second floor) Carlson Education Building (CEB) - across from Work Room 321 UNLV/CSUN Preschool Boyd School of Law - BSL, Room 210. Please go to BSL, Room 211 for access to the room Lied Library - Space may be reserved in Lied Library when other, dedicated lactation spaces are not available — for

instance on evenings, weekends, and holidays Greenspun Hall - Students and staff can talk with Greenspun dean’s office staff for access to a lactation space.

Four of the sites (Jean Nidetch Women’s Center SSC-A 255, The Center for Social Justice, UNLV/CSUN Preschool and the Rebel Wellness Zone) have a refrigerator for daily milk storage. In the JNWC Lactation Room, we also have a Medela Lactina Electric Plus Pump for you to use with your own attachments.

UNLV Cares Food Pantry collects donations from the UNLV community to assist students and staff. The idea is to pro-vide a mode of support for members of the UNLV community struggling to afford food through a discreet system that allows Rebels to help one another. Pantry use is only permitted once during an open week unless you are arriving on foot, bike or public transportation. As with previous semesters, if you can't make it to open pantry hours, we can arrange for special accommodations

on an emergency basis (contact information is listed at the bottom of this document). We are continuing to check ID's. We only serve those affiliated with UNLV, so please bring your ID with you. We are a supplementary food pantry which operates on a very limited budget; please adhere to the allotted quantities

which we have put in place to ensure our ability to continue serving the students, staff and faculty of UNLV. We are counting on campus generosity to restock our shelves. Please drop off canned goods and nonperishable foods in donation boxes located at: Lied Library, Student Union, and the Student Wellness and Recreation Center. Please contact us to arrange any donation that the boxes may not accommodate. The UNLV Cares Food Pantry is located at the UNLV Paradise Campus - 851 E. Tropicana Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89119. The pantry is located in the PAR6 building, which is in the back of the Paradise Campus. A map been included on the back of this page. *****FEBRUARY 2017 OPEN PANTRY HOURS***** Monday, February 6 - 10:00 am - 2:30 pm Friday, February 10 - 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm Thursday, February 23 - 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm Friday, February 24 - 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm Future UNLV Cares Food Pantry distribution dates will be posted soon. As a PhD student and graduate assistant, I have been privileged to sit on several search committees organized by different departments. During many of these proceedings, potential candidates initially introduce them-selves, share their history and backgrounds, and equally important, they present their theories and academic philosophies in their respected fields. Following this part of the interview, the educator—in most cases—demonstrates how they usually approach the classroom space and performs and activity in front of their audi-ence. The beauty of this process is, first and foremost, the educational aspect: Many of us if not most hope or expect to be in that situation in the near future—for some, a bit later; and equally important, it gives the stu-dent—and maybe the observing professors—an idea of what level of rigor or thoroughness, is expected of aca-demics. If one ever has an opportunity to sit on a search committee, in order to participate in the academic cul-ture, take part in the process of becoming a Tier One university, or just to witness part of the process to be-come tenured, take a break in your schedule and enjoy it. See your department for upcoming searches.

UNLV’s self-described “Community Garden” is an initiative designed for you, the people. Per the UNLV website, the Community Garden is intended to “create a sense of community, learning and sustainability among students, faculty and staff through the common goal of producing 100 percent organic, natural harvests.” The soil will be tilled by students and faculty alike and plots are distributed on first come first serve basis. If you have ever woken from a dream of dirt stained palms plucking bulbous-fleshy tomatoes off the vine, then longed to return to sleep, this may be for you.

The Community Garden isn’t new, although many are hearing of it for the first time. It existed in years past, incon-sistent management internal politics tainted its development; it was cast aside. Until Elissa Lafranconi inquired about it near her graduation. During her time as a student at UNLV Elissa volunteered at the Community Garden and felt strongly about its positive value. So much so, she created a petition, garnered signatures, that led to meeting with Uni-versity President Jessup. The university leadership recognized her passion for the project so they offered her the oppor-tunity to run it. This Rebel with a cause brought something worthwhile back to the UNLV community.

The near future will bring an associated monthly farmers market, bringing together different departments on campus with third party vendors and educators. There are plans for a monthly culinary event that is sure to highlight the garden-to-table message. These efforts will earn money, which funnels back into the program itself and the UNLV community. Environmentally and economically sustainable is a model we, as students of our generation, are be grasping for. The stage is set for conversations about environmental issues, the role of food producers, culinary creativity, and so much more. All we have to do is show up, and lend a hand.

Graduate & Professional Student Research Forum - April 8, 2017

The Graduate and Professional Student Research Forum is an annual event for students across campus to come together and share their research with fellow students and faculty. Students can present their research either as a poster or in an oral presentation. This provides an opportunity for students to practice presenting for future conferences in a professional setting. The Forum is open to all graduate and professional students at UNLV. This year the GPSA has al-located $160,000 to fund students for research and confer-ence travel. Any graduate and/or professional student who

has received GPSA funding for the 2016-2017 year are required to present at the Fo-rum. Awards for outstanding presentations are announced at the end of the event. Faculty are also encouraged to attend to support their students research and to see other research being conducted campus-wide.

This year’s Graduate and Professional Student Research Forum will be held on April 8th on the second floor of the Student Union Building.

To register or to get more information about the event visit the GPSA’s website at http://gpsa.unlv.edu/forum/.

Share your research with the campus —- the deadline to register is March 4, 2017.
