Because they don’t think so much. They just do it, and see what happens. If it doesn’t work out, they try again.

Decision-making is tough because uncertainty is inevitable. The more you think and want to avoid it, the more you are going to be scared and not do it. Don’t fall into the trap of studying a good idea until it becomes bad! Maybe things that need to be decided should not be discussed. Forget about

being 100% sure to start doing things!Today’s business world is evolving faster than ever before. The new cool kid on the block is ‘disruption’. It

takes the world by storm primarily brought about by technological advancements, creating new rules, or simply becoming the new name of the game. And those who can’t adapt fast enough, will end up trying to catch up or possibly it’s ‘Game Over’ for them.

According to the Founder of the Institute of Management Development World Competitiveness Centre, Emeritus Professor Stéphane Garelli, having the mindset of competitiveness is essential to ensure that you stay in the game.

The mindset one has is fundamental and is what sets competent people apart from being competitive. Competent people exist in every company, but to unlock the element of competitiveness, their mindsets and value systems have to be right and properly managed, if not they will end up nowhere.

Professor Garelli shed light, with the business executives and leaders present at the Singapore Management Festival (SMF), on inspirational real-life stories to illustrate how this mindset can enable leaders today to stay in the game and build a successful business.

1. ‘The One Who Insists on Perfect Clearness Before He Decides NEVER Decides’Uncertainties are simply part of the game.If you are going to wait for 100% certainty,you will never make the move. Most peopledon’t dare to take that step forward,and end up not doing anything. This is thereason why entrepreneurs are so good.

rational, there may be a chance that someone else has already done it. How are you different? Logic takes you from Point A to Point B. But imagination will take you anywhere. Think about the big success stories of IKEA. Founded in the 1940s, they came up with a revolutionary idea to get customers to buy wooden planks in their warehouses, so that they could go home and fix their furniture themselves. This was a crazy business model but they made it.

Similarly, when McDonald’s first started in the 1940s, they got their customers to queue in front of their kitchens with little trays to get their food and asking them to eat with their fingers! It was absurd and disruptive at that time but it worked! Though imagination comes with risk, risk is actually good for you! Because in life, you cannot avoid risk, you can only manage it. The least amount of risk you can take is to take risk. So never say no to a good idea.

4. “If You Want to Lead People, You Have to Enter Their World.”Lastly, the distance between leaders andtheir followers also plays an importantrole when it comes to staying competitive.Without understanding the people thathave chosen to put their faith in you tobe led by you, you cannot fully utilise andnurture these followers. Just being goodat what you do is not enough. You have tointeract with the world around you.

Power distance is the acceptance of unequal distribution of power. In a workplace environment that believes in having high power distance, the hierarchy structure may sometimes become unhealthy and oppressive. A leader who is willing to increase the proximity between them and their followers can better understand the individuals around them who may believe in the same vision they have. This way, leaders can better help to promote the growth of their followers.

2. ‘Success Is Dangerous’Companies that have succeeded in the past tend to want to copy their successes over and over again. But emulation is too safe a route to take and will more often than not backfire on those who opt for it. In a world that is constantly evolving and innovating, emulating past successes is akin to applying old technologies and strategies in a new competitive world. This is a straight-through route to failure, caused by a salient mismatch of solutions to problems.

We did witness these in Sony and Nokia with the ubiquitous Sony Walkman and the ever-reliable, almost invulnerable Nokia cellphones. Eventually, as the economy evolved to become what it is now, both once-formidable companies which were too immersed in their past successes missed the evolution. They were swiftly overthrown by their new competitors, some of which entered the industries even later than both did. So, success can be dangerous.

3. “Imagination Will Take You Everywhere.” If your business model is logical and

SIM PD partners local company Pure Good to transform the halal industry through professional learning

SIM Professional Development (SIM PD) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on November 17, 2018 to establish a strategic partnership with Pure Good

Management Pte Ltd to build leadership competencies for the global halal industry through management programmes, sharing of best practices and networking.

Pure Good provides an integrated supply chain services for halal products and facilitates the entrance of halal certified products from SMEs into the regional and international markets.

Under the agreement, both parties will offer opportunities for activities and programmes, such as learning, coaching, mentoring and market development to foster a collaborative relationship. They will also co-curate and market workshops in the areas of leadership development, personal mastery as well as industry compliance and standards.

The agreement was signed between Mr Ronald Tan, Executive Director of Singapore Institute of Management and Mr Zuraimi Jumaat, Director, Halal Compliance and International Strategic Alliance, Pure Good Management Pte Ltd. It was witnessed by His Excellency Dr Mohamed Omar Abdullah Balfaqeeh, Ambassador of United Arab Emirates to Singapore and other guests at the start of an international forum at the 19th edition of Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) or The Malay and Islamic World Convention held at the Max Atria Singapore Expo.

Held over three days, the convention was attended by over 300 delegates from DMDI member countries including Brunei, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Cambodia and South Africa. SIM PD participated in the trade exhibition organised in conjunction with the convention.

Emulating past successes is akin to applying old technologies

and strategies in a new competitive world. This is a

straight-through route to failure, caused by a salient mismatch of

solutions to problems.

Are you afraid of the disruptive technology? Well, all you need is a mindset change!

Today’s business world is changing and evolving faster than ever before. The new cool kid on the block is ‘disruption’. It takes the world by storm primarily brought about by technological advancements, creating new rules, or simply becoming the new name of the game. And those who can’t adapt fast enough, will end up trying to catch up or possibly it’s ‘Game Over’ for them.

So what can business leaders do? According to the Founder of the Institute of Management Development World Competitiveness Centre, Emeritus Professor Stephane Garelli, having the mindset of competitiveness is essential to ensure that you stay in the game.

So what does a competitive mindset really mean? The mindset one has is fundamental and is what sets competent people apart from being competitive. Competent people exist in every company, but to unlock the element of competitiveness, their mindsets and value systems have to be right and properly managed, if not they will end up nowhere.

How can we achieve a competitive mindset then? Professor Garelli shed light

We did witness these in Sony and Nokia with the ubiquitous Sony Walkman and the ever-reliable, almost invulnerable Nokia cellphones. Eventually, as the economy evolved to become what it is now, both once-formidable companies which were too immersed in their past successes missed the evolution. Result? They were swiftly overthrown by their new competitors, some of which entered the industries even later than both did. So, success can be dangerous.

3. “Imagination Will Take You Everywhere.”If your business model is logical andrational, there may be a chance thatsomeone else has already done it. Howare you different? Logic takes you fromPoint A to Point B. But imagination will takeyou anywhere. Think about the big successstories of IKEA. Founded in the 1940s, theycame up with a revolutionary idea to getcustomers to buy wooden planks in theirwarehouses, so that they could go homeand fix their furniture themselves. This wasa crazy business model but they made it.

Similarly, when McDonald’s first started in the 1940s, they got their customers to queue in front of their kitchens with little trays to get their food and asking them to eat with their fingers! It was absurd and disruptive at that time but it worked! Though imagination comes with risk, risk is actually good for you! Because in life, you cannot avoid risk, you can only manage it. The least amount of risk you can take is to

1. ‘The One Who Insists on Perfect Clearness Before He Decides NEVER Decides’Uncertainties are simply part of the game.If you are going to wait for 100% certainty,you will never make the move. Most people don’t dare to take that step forward,and end up not doing anything. This is thereason why entrepreneurs are so good.Because they don’t think so much. Theyjust do it, and see what happen. If it doesn’t work out, they do it again.

Decision-making is tough because uncertainty is inevitable. The more you think and want to avoid it, the more you

take risk. So never say no to a good idea.

4. “If You Want to Lead People, You Have to Enter Their World.”Lastly, the distance between leaders andtheir followers also plays an importantrole when it comes to staying competitive.Without understanding the people thathave chosen to put their faith in you tobe led by you, you cannot fully utilise andnurture these followers. Just being goodat what you do is not enough. You have tointeract with the world around you.

Power distance is the acceptance of unequal distribution of power. In a workplace environment that believes in having high power distance, the hierarchy structure may sometimes become unhealthy and oppressive. A leader who is willing to increase the proximity between them and their followers can better understand the individuals around them who may believe in the same vision they have. This way, leaders can better help to promote the growth of their followers.
