James Malmberg, Orchestra ConductorA graduate of the UBC School of Music, James Malmberg enjoys a career of teaching, performing and conducting. He is a faculty member of the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra and has spent his summers teaching at the Yukon Summer Music Festival, the UBC Summer Music Institute, and the Edmonton Suzuki Institute. He is the Artistic Director of the Valhalla Suzuki Institute in New Denver BC. James has adjudicated at festivals in Langley,

Powell River, Sechelt, and the Kootenays. He has performed with the National Youth Orchestra, Lions Gate Sinfonia, the Orca String Quartet, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Island Symphony and the Kamloops and Okanagan Symphonies. Since graduating from UBC he has continued his studies in Suzuki Pedagogy in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Edmonton. He was appointed conductor of the Richmond Orchestra in 2007 and teaches violin at his studios in Tsawwassen and Richmond.

William Lu, PianoWilliam is 13 years old. He began to study piano at the age of 5 and currently is a student of Dr. Victor Shevtsov. William is a very talented young musician and, amazingly for his age, is an experienced performer. His brilliant technique, understanding of different music styles and expressive playing never leave the audience indifferent. William has won numerous awards, scholarships and prestigious prizes in various festivals and competitions. Notable achievements include: Richmond Festival:

Scholarship in Beethoven Challenge class; Trophy for the Most Promising Pianist in all piano divisions. Kiwanis Festival: Nomination to Provincial level of BC Festival of Arts. BCRMTA Awards for the highest marks in Grade 10 and ARCT RCM exams. Second Prize and a Scholarship at CMC National Final 2013 in Sherbrooke. William participated in three Young Stars Gala Concerts in Gateway Theatre.

Tom McPherson, Chorus AccompanistTom McPherson has been the accompanist for Richmond Chorus since 2002. For nearly as long, he has served as pianist for the North Shore Unitarian Church in West Vancouver, and since 2012 has accompanied Saturna Singers on their beautiful and remote island. He teaches piano and theory to students of all ages at his studio in Kitsilano, frequently modifying content to suit his students’ unique needs and interests. Wearing his “other hat”, Tom serves as a consulting astrologer,

helping clients see their innate potential while providing meaning to their current and upcoming cycles. In March 2014, Tom was awarded the DFAstrolS credential from London’s Faculty Of Astrological Studies — an achievement recognized worldwide as one of astrology’s most prestigious awards. Tom is a graduate of the Eastman School Of Music, the Royal Conservatory Of Music, and the University Of Toronto. He can be reached through his websites: VancouverAstrology.com and TomMcPherson.ca.

Brigid Coult, Chorus ConductorBrigid Coult trained and worked in England until coming to Canada in 1982. She has been directing Richmond Chorus since 1994. Currently she is Director of Music at St. Mary’s Kerrisdale Anglican Church, and she has also served on diocesan and national church committees. She has sung with the award‐winning women’s choir, ELEKTRA, and still sings occasionally at Christ Church Cathedral with the Compline Choir. Ms. Coult was President of the

BC Choral Federation (BCCF) for 13 years, and is currently its Project Manager; she has served with the Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) as National Youth Choir liaison and as President, and is currently a moderator for ChoralNet. She was involved in the organization of the World Symposium on Choral Music (III) in 1993, the World of Children’s Choirs in 2001, and the recent ACCC/BCCF ChorPodium conference in 2006. She teaches voice and piano locally, and has served as an adjudicator and choral clinician for festivals throughout B.C.

~ President’s Message ~

The magic of the movies can take us from the streets of New York to the far reaches of outer space. We can admire the courage of the enslaved men and women on the Amistad or be entertained by the animated world of Walt Disney. And in every movie our understanding of the story is enhanced by the soundtrack, often leaving a lasting impression. Blue Skies might conjure up Fred Astaire’s amazing dancing, or you may be reminded, with Gabriel’s Oboe, of Father Gabriel’s selflessness in the jungles of South America. The Richmond Orchestra and Chorus hopes tonight’s music of Hollywood will bring back many memories of films you have enjoyed. The Orchestra and Chorus are very pleased to have William Lu join us in this endeavour. We are also honored to have Rebecca Hass as guest host. We welcome the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation as our Community Partner for tonight’s concert and thank its many volunteers and donors who contribute to this very important organization.
