On behalf of The San Diego River Park Foundation, welcome to avery special evening oftribute to San Diego's own Joan Embery.

Joan means a great deal to our organization. As a volunteer memberof our Board of Directors and as an advocate, Joan shares ourpassion for the San Diego River. You may not know that some ofJoan's earliest experiences with wildlife and the outdoors were righton the River. She is one ofthe River's best champions.

One of the things we love about Joan is her personal drive to shareher love for nature and to inspire others. Whether it is wildlife in herbackyard or around the world, Joan is indeed one of nature's verybest friends.

We are so grateful that you are able to share with us in thiscelebration of Joan Embery, a remarkable treasure for ourcommunity.

About Joan Embery and theEmbery Institute for Wildlife Conservation ~

Few people in the world are as dedicated to the preservation ofwildlife and the environment as Joan Embery.

For the majority of her life, she hasworked with animals, championingthe need for preservation andthe protection of their rapidlydiminishing habitats.

In an effort to broaden the reach ofher rnessaqe, Joan and the EmberyInstitute for Wildlife Conservationspread the word about the needfor conservation by educating andmotivating the public to develop agreater understanding.

In Joan's words, we are challenged to determine the fate ofanimal life on our planet and the delicate balance of naturalresources. Decisions we make today will determine the health ofour world and the future of all its inhabitants.

The Embery Institute for Wildlife Conservation promotesawareness of endangered animals and their shrinkinghabitats. It aids veterinarians' efforts to conservehealthy wildlife both in the u.s. and around the world.The Institute allows Joan to teach others about wildlifeconservation and is dedicated to connecting people withwildlife and conservation issues.

Joan believes we have the ability to define our future qualityof life and the fate of those without a voice. Her passion is topreserve our natural world and its incredible beauty and diversity.Working toqether, we can help ensure a healthy planet for bothhumans and animals.

The San Diego River Discovery Centerat Grant Park

The San Diego River Discovery Center at Grant Park is an exciting newproject ofthe San Diego River Park Foundation. Situated on ~7 acres ofriver-fronting property in Mission Valley, one of San Diego's most urbancommunities, the project will feature Southern California's PremiereRiver Education Center within a community park. It will be a regionalgathering place with a neighborhood feel- a place designed for peoplebut always with the region's namesake river in mind.

Planned project elements include:Trails Outdoor Learning CirclesClassrooms AmphitheaterRiver Laboratory Exhibit SpaceObservation Deck Retail to Serve Park UsersFestival Area GazeboSustainable Design PublicArt

This project is being made possible by the extraordinary generosity ofthe Grant Family who is donating this ~7 acre property to the San DiegoRiver Park Foundation. This beautiful piece of land had been in theirfamily for the last aoo years. In 2005, the River Park Foundation wasapproached by the family, who wanted to do something special withtheir gem of a property. They were interested in creating a place wherepeople and the River would come together and where children couldplay and experience the wonders of nature. The final concept plans forthis vision will be unveiled tonight.
