THE CHALLENGE IS ON! Class of 1965 Raises the Stakes! #

All of us are aware of the difficulties facing students and teachers in public schools today. The media is filled with data about decreases in funding for education and state and national budget issues. It is abundantly clear that public education needs private philanthropic support if it is to compete successfully with the growing number of private institutions and to cope with the challenges of diminished State sup-port. #LAUSD has no way to disburse donated funds to an individual school. In 1985, the Uni High Education Foundation was established to address that issue. All funds that come to the UHEF go directly to Uni. None of it goes through the District. #Members of the ARTESIANS and PELEANS, the Classes of 1965, have brought a challenge to all their classmates: mark the 50th anniversary of graduation with a significant class gift. They believe that their classes can reach a goal of $1,000,000! To kick off the reunion fundraising drive, one class member has already pledged $50,000! This is an exciting campaign. The Class of 1965 had about 1,000 members, and the committee is seeking to enlist more ’65 classmates to make the effort a complete success. Please link to www.unihi65.com to start your active support. #Certainly, the goal set by the class of ’65 is high, but the time is ripe and the community is ready. For many years, UHEF has raised funds primarily through membership and the newsletter. This ambitious new campaign will initiate the model for on-going support through reunion giving. This is a challenge to all classes celebrating reunions, particularly upcoming Golden Anniversary reunions. As each of you plans to celebrate your reunion, include giving back to Uni. This way class reunions can not only be fun, but also become a more meaningful event. #Your experience at Uni was more than racing up the steps to get to class on time before the bell rang. Your education at Uni laid the groundwork for lifelong success. Help carry on the tradition of great public education that University High School has provided for all of its graduates. Meet the challenge in your own way, but meet the challenge.

Annual All-Alumni Event Morphs to the Links in 2014 #

The UHEF has sponsored an annual all-alumni picnic and car show at the end of September for many years. For those who came to the events it was fun seeing old friends and meeting some of the wonderful students who are at Uni today. Currently, however, Uni is under construction all over campus. For this reason, Uni cannot safely host the all-alumni event on campus this year. #The UHEF has been very happy to have this annual event. With the modernization and upgrades occurring on campus, we hope to plan future events to bring us all together. With this in mind, we are pleased to announce the inaugural Golf Tournament on April 14, 2014. Join Principal Davidson, staff, students, coaches, parents, and alumni to tee off for Uni. Check the Uni website (www.universitywildcats.org). An e-mail announcement will also be forthcoming in late Fall.

This past year the UHEF made the following allocations to support the University High School com-munity, totaling $32,007 plus newsletter production and mailing.

★ The College Advisor - $17,100 to cover health insurance. The LAUSD agreed to pay her salary as a professional expert, not a contract employee, and would not cover benefits. We are delighted that we could help so many of Uni’s students. Fortunately, her position became full-time for the new school year so we will not have to cover her benefits in the coming year.

★ Counselor’s Office - $4,776 for 2 years Naviance, a college and career readiness software provider that partners with high schools and other K–12 institutions to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools.

Eric Davidson, the Principal of University High School.

I spent the brief summer break reflecting on the progress the school has made over the past five years. Our Academic Performance Index has risen 112 points. This past year Uni garnered praise from the visiting WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), the accrediting commission for California schools. The committee recognized our students as being among the nicest young people they have seen, and LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy sent Uni a letter of commendation. This summer, we were notified that Uni received a 6-year accreditation with a 3-year revisit. As we begin the 2013-14 school year, Uni will have 11 new teachers to carry on this tradition of excellence. Our graduating seniors have gone on to the best four-year schools in the country, in-cluding Harvard, Yale, Penn, Brown, UCLA, Michigan, and LMU. Our teaching staff con-tinues to gain honors for excellence in teaching. Our class Valedictorian Lilian Peng was recognized as one of 147 Presidential Scholars. Clearly, Uni is maintaining the academic reputation of the “Warrior” years. One of the gratifying elements of being a principal is the generosity of alumni. This year, Scott Kivel, student body president of the graduating class ’67, contacted me. He has donated $50,000.00 to Uni. There were 2 stipulations: one, students would determine how money would be spent; and, two, the donation honors Dr. Warren L. Steinberg, Uni Asst. Principal in the years that Scott was a student. The students decided to build a pressbox for athletic events and purchased an auxiliary refrigerator for the new gym. At Uni, we constantly seek programs that connect students to the school and commu-nity. Now, the athletic program has a new gym, outdoor basketball court and tennis facility all of which help. A new tartan turf track and field will begin construction in January. Alumni support of this project is sorely needed to ensure our student athletes compete on the best possible turf. The arts program at the school has been extensively slashed over the past four years. That has not diminished the hopes and dreams of our talented students. We continue to present top quality musical and theatrical productions that can be even better with your support. A newly constructed state of the art digital recording studio is the centerpiece of the program. Through the nearly ninety years of University High School there has never been a more important time to give back to the school that prepares its students to follow in the footsteps of our esteemed alumni who have carried forward the values that are intrinsic to University High School. 2014 will be the best year yet. Go Warriors! Go Wildcats!

On May 21, 2013, LAUSD Board member Steve Zimmer presided over a ribbon-cutting cer-emony celebrating the completion of several ma-jor construction projects on campus: the Magrud-er Music Complex, the New Gym, New Tennis Courts and a New Parent Center! The event was held on the beautiful new Westgate Tennis Courts and after speeches Principal Eric Davidson and Board Member Zimmer played a friendly set of tennis. Principal Davidson prevailed! #! The major construction projects were many years in process. The seismic-mitigation project, initiated in 1995 by LAUSD following the Northridge Earthquake, resulted in the immediate closing of the Music Instruction Rooms and ultimately the West gym building. The athletic programs were moved into the New Gym after completion in 2011, but the Music Rooms were red-tagged and the programs became somewhat peripatetic. Thanks to the efforts and persistence of Arthur Shane, Chairman of the Performing Arts department, Uni was awarded $1.5 million in funding by the California Department of Education from the Career Techni-cal Education Facilities Program, matching the District’s construction allocation. The grant allowed the completion and outfitting of the stunning new high-tech instructional space. In addition to music theory, instrumental and ensemble instruction and vocal performance, the new space provides keyboard labs and equipment enabling students to study and learn on state-of-the-art music pro-duction equipment. #Next up for completion is the new track. We’re looking forward to the next ribbon-cutting ceremony!

A UNI FIRST: PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR LILLIAN PENG Washington D.C. Honors Class of 2013

Valedictorian Lillian Peng With a history of producing outstanding graduates, Uni now adds another gold star to its

success list: one of the Nation’s highest academic achievement honors has been awarded to class Valedictorian Lillian Peng. She joined a group of 141 graduating seniors, selected from a nation-wide group of about 2600 candidates, at a ceremony in Washington D.C. Not only were

the Scholars recognized at a White House Ceremony on June 16 2013, but also during the week they were celebrated at muse-ums, monuments and offices in D.C. In an article that Lillian wrote for Uni’s Wildcat newspaper she said: “While I am indeed proud of my academic achievements, I

am even prouder to say that I am more then just a stereotype —that straight-A shy Chinese girl infatuated with science. Thanks to Uni, I have been able to grow in so many other ways: as an athlete, as a friend, as a leader through Cross Country, Soccer, Academic Decathlon, Red Cross club and Environmental club.” Lillian truly is a well-rounded person, and she selected Uni as her high school. She will be going to UCLA in the Fall. Presidential Scholars were also asked to name their most influential teacher to come to the awards ceremony. Lillian chose her history teacher, Dr. Debo-rah Robbins who was also honored at the event. In

UHEF ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS Each year the UHEF happily awards annual scholarships to college-bound seniors. The recipi-

ents are selected by the Counseling staff. Other awards were given, but these are the high-lights of Senior Awards night.

Two $1000.00 awards, for Outstanding Community Service during their high school career, are given directly by the Foundation and funded by YOUR donations. This year, TYLER JACK-SON-ZENO volunteered for 663 hours at the Santa Monica Family YMCA, as a counselor in train-ing. He will be going to Santa Monica College in September. JOSE ERNESTO LOPEZ, devoted 928 hours at Stoner Park Recreation Center as a staffer for 5 & 6 yr. olds. He will be going to Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

No one appreciated the financial struggles of today’s students more than the late SHARON MEDNICK who served as the college counselor from 1995 to 2003. Thanks to the generous $10,000.00 bequest from her estate, and the continuing annual donations from alumni, the UHEF continues bestowing the $1000 Sharon Mednick Scholarship to a student who demonstrates an interest in pursuing a career in education. This year, The award has gone to SUSANNA KIM. Su-sanna is going to Boston University and intends to get an Elementary School Credential. She plans on teaching either Kindergarten or 1st Grade.

Established four years ago and supported by former PTA president Melanie Rome, The Uni-versity High School Character Counts Award for $500.00 has been given to Wildcat Newspaper editor ELLI WEINSTOCK. Elli will be going to Hofstra University.

Although the UHEF has nothing to do with the other awards and scholarships to graduating seniors, it is noteworthy that the Senior Awards Ceremony recognized three Posse Scholars who will be going to the University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University and Kalamazoo College and a Questbridge Scholar who will attend the University of Chicago. Senior ANDREW ELLIOT re-ceived the UC Regents Scholarship for UCLA, the university’s most prestigious award. These are all full four-year scholarships.

Finally, the generous THELMA L. CULVERSON W’56 continues her support for Uni students and UCLA. SIERRA WILEY, class leader, member of Girls’ Varsity Volleyball and Track teams, 2012 representative to Girls’ State, is the recipient of the 16th TLC Award a, full four-year scholar-ship to UCLA.

Your support of the UHEF makes these scholarships possible. Please consider donating to these scholarships when you return your UHEF membership. The smiles on the faces of these se-niors truly light up the room, and we look forward to supporting more Uni High graduates.

Alumni Summer Production of Rent dazzles audience

Note: Former Uni Drama teacher Jack Mitchell who currently serves as the Secondary Arts Consultant, California Department of Education, brought Uni alum together for a production of Rent on July 19 and 20. Modest assistance from UHEF and a dedicated cast supported the production. For a backstage peek at the collaboration, witness the dialogue between Mitchell and drama Alum, Uni graduate Alex Grabarchuk ‘05 below. Mitchell: We all know that theatre has the capacity to entertain, instruct, and enrich the lives of both performers and audience members. Since leaving Uni in 2007, I am reminded daily of all that I have learned in and through the theatre. To spend time again with my former students, now friends, and unwitting teachers and to create a performance piece that might draw other Alums back to Uni seemed like a win all the way around. Grabarchuk: When I first started bugging Mr. Mitchell, about getting together and doing an alumni show, I was half-kidding. I missed the atmosphere of Stivelman Theater, the amazing creative energy of my drama peers, and the profound guidance of Mitch himself. With the insistence and talents of another Uni theater alum, Arian Khaefi (’01), we wore Mitch down to start making Rent real. Fliers were out to alumni who had worked with Mitch in the past, and we’d audition via YouTube. The rehearsal period could take no more than 2 weeks. Mitch would direct. Arian and I would co-mu-sic-direct. Mitchell: We decided on RENT because it is about holding on to relationships at the riskiest times in our lives. The production was itself, a risk that carried with it capacity for reward (as most do). It was the best of what reunions have to offer; an opportunity to reflect on the past, reconnect in a special moment, and to create and take away new memories and “lessons” to sustain us until next we meet again, and to have a load of fun in the process. Some highlights of the “behind the scenes” process can be seen in this com-memorative video put together by alumna April Warren (’99): http://tinyurl.-com/unihighdoesRENT!

Ken Price W’53 is a Big Deal! Nationally and internationally recognized as one of Ameri-ca’s most significant contemporary sculptors, Price has made a powerful mark in the art world. Currently, a Price exhibit is at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and last year LACMA held an important retrospective that drew large crowds. Price graduated from University High School in 1953 where he served as a cartoonist for the school newspaper in 1952-1953. We are fairly sure that Price also designed endpapers for the yearbook.*

Price knew from the beginning that he would be an artist. He began drawing, often producing books and cartoons in childhood, and while still a student at Uni, he signed up for classes in ceramics at Santa Monica City college. After graduation from high school, formal study included time at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and a degree at USC. An enthusiastic surfer who explored the Pacific coast, Price frequently ventured south to Tijuana where he was drawn to curio stores that fed a lifelong interest in Mexican pottery and folk art. Before he left Los Angeles, Price studied with renowned ceramic sculp-tor, Peter Voulkos at Otis Art Institute. Somewhat a rebel throughout his life and especially in his early years as an artist, Price moved deliberately away from Voulkos’ powerful influence to study at Alfred University in upstate New York where he experi-mented with his hallmark colorful glazes while he received an MFA in Ceramics.

Returning to Los Angeles, Price found an artistic home at the Ferus Gallery by 1960. He became a fixture in what grew to be an enormously influential nexus of the art world along with fellow artists Robert Irwin, Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, John Altoon, Larry Bell, and John McCracken. Los Angeles became not just a center of the national art scene but the cen-ter from the 60’s forward, and Ken Price played a vital role in the transformation.

In interviews, Price often referred to the impact of growing up in Los Angeles. Like many young men of the 50’s, he was fasci-nated by LA’s car culture and the fabrication shops that made it possible to customize virtually anything. The Warrior cartoon above was one of several that he drew at Uni with cars as the focus. Price found it natural to add color to his sculptures in an almost play-ful way that made his work stand out amidst more conventional work of the 60’s. Always a craftsman and an artist, Price said: “A craftsman knows what he is going to make...an artist doesn’t know what he’s go-ing to make or what the finished product is going to look like.”

Price did not live to witness the enor-mously popular tributes at LACMA or the Met. In February of 2012, he died of cancer in Taos, New Mexico, where he had lived with his family and kept a studio since the 70’s. His good friend Frank Gehry designed both of the exhibits which have drawn raves from all ends of the spectrum—critics famil-iar with his work and art lovers who have viewed the stunning retrospective for the first time.

We are grateful to many sources for the information in the above. Among them: Frank Lloyd Gallery website, the New Yorker, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. All of the cartoons are taken from the Winter 1953 Warrior archive at Uni, and the cartoon panels are in the 1953 Chieftain.* Given the style of the credited Warrior cartoons, we are reasonably sure that the ’53 Chieftain cartoon strips were also done by Price. # If any of you have information regarding this Uni history, please share it in your class notes.

THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST NEWSLETTER!! #The Uni High Education Foundation (UHEF) has been raising funds to supplement funding in support of the instructional program at Uni-versity High School since 1985. A primary way we do this is through the newsletter and your generous support. #We send our annual Newsletter via “snail mail” to over 14,000 alumni and friends of Uni. It may be that a number of our addresses are not current, and possibly a lot of paper goes into the circular file. It costs the UHEF about $11,000 annually between printing and postage costs to mail to everyone. The money we raise is sorely needed to support Uni’s instructional program, our basic mission, and even a small percentage of waste hurts. #Many of you receiving our newsletter support UHEF and Uni with your generous donations and are loyal members of UHEF. Indeed, many of you are Lifetime Members having donated $250 or much more. We thank you most sincerely.

# #However, there are those from whom we have had no response at#all. Therefore, the UHEF Board has decided to send the annual Newsletter to all Lifetime Members and only to those who donate $10 or more for an annual Membership. We must have a current address to know that you are interested in receiving the newsletter.##Annual membership is only $10 per year! That covers the cost of printing and mailing. Other levels of giving are most welcome, as in-dicated on the membership form and the enclosed envelope. Please join UHEF and help Uni give today’s kids the same great education and experience we all had.##If we don’t hear back from you, we will surmise that your address in our database is inaccurate or you are no longer interested in receiv-ing the Newsletter, and to save money and paper, we’ll remove you from our mailing list.

1939 TAHITIANS/MIDSHIPMEN AURORA RIVAS - still here at New Horizons and enjoy-ing retirement at age 90. I'd still like to hear from any of my old Unihi friends. ROBERT HAGENBAUGH is now 91 years old. He had 26 years in the Air Force and Reserve, 29 years with the Los Angeles Police Department and has been re-tired for 35 years here in St. George Utah. We are now having the Senior Olympics. We are sad to report the passing of TONY VALDIVIA. After graduating Uni Tony went to UCLA, and during WWII served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise when it was hit by kamikaze fire. He was justifiably proud of his service. He loved golf, was a runner of four marathons and a member of Tony’s Tigers. He organized each year’s reunion of Tahitians and Midshipmen as well as other classes and was a supporter of the UHEF since its inception. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, who became an honorary Warrior. He will be sorely missed. In Memoriam: JOHN YAEGER, TONY VALDIVIA, FLORENCE "FLOSSIE" CLEVERLY #

1952 - MARINERS/PARISIANS JERRY LAWRENCE expressed the same frustration that was echoed by many: “I always look forward to the annual car show-picnic and almost always make it, and usually bring my Cougar. Usually the only one I see there that I remember is JOSE UANGA and I enjoy talking with him. So why did I receive this on Monday, October 1, 2012? JUDITH CLAYTON HOP-KINS retired to St. Charles, IL, about 40 miles west of Chicago, in 2004, after a career in academic medicine and clinical research, which morphed into almost 15 years in technology development. The latter is based in Baltimore, a great city with proximity to great destina-tions and attractions, and wonderful travel opportunities to much more. Chicago has everything, but it requires much energy, tolerance for crowds, traffic and $$$ to see what I had in Baltimore within an hour's drive (or less by train). Life in this western suburb is easy, excit-ing, enriched by wonderful music and theater, without even requiring the trip into the Big City. I enjoy living here, although less since my son and his family moved out 1000 miles away! I should have asked for a guaran-tee when I retired here! The occasional visits to West LA find the old neighborhoods, including UCLA where I spent many years, almost unrecognizable. Still it is grat-ifying to see a few old landmarks. I hope to get back to UniHi one of these days when I can plan a trip during one of the get-together events. ADRIENNE SIMON FORST - my children all graduated from Uni; 1978,
