EMV or Chip Cards

Members with new accounts or those who have expir ing cards beg inning Apr il 1 will receive the new EMV or chip cards The new car d continues to have a magnetic str ipe on the back but what is new is a m ini-chip on the front of the card - hence t he nickname chip card

EMV cards improve secur ity aga inst fraud compared to magnetic str ipe cards that relied on signature ver if ication and the authentication of the card by merchants and thei r em ployees In most cases merchants were not performing the ver ification so the ability of cr im inals to manufactu re fake cards has become an issue the last several years The new EMV card will offer increased protection for those tr ansactions where a card is presented by the inclusion of the chip as it is embedded with add itional encryption Merchants that do not have pointbullofbullsale terminals to verify t he chip will become liable for these transactions Today your fi nancial institution bears t he responsibility for these losses

7 Secrets to Pain-Free Tax Filing

April 15 is a special day on the calendar - but probably not one youre celebrating Were talking ofcourse about Tax Day 2015s tax season has come and gone and it was quite a doozy So were here tospread the word about easy tax filintips we picked up Whether youre afirst-t ime filer or an experienced taxpayer use these seven tricks to smoothly sail through tax deadline day

1 Get Organized Easy tax fil ing is all about having the right documentation The moment you receive your first form get a folder or container to keep them together and secure Get an unknown form Look it up The more you know about the way taxes work the better youll be at finding refunds so it pays to be curious

2 Stay Ahead of the Game Dont procrastinate The longer you wait to file your taxes the less t ime youll have to resolve any issues you run into before Tax Day

3 Know Your Status As todays tax forms are recognizing more and di fferent kinds of living arrangements be sure to choose the right filing status People often m isunderstand the term Head of Household To fi le under this status you must have a qualifying dependent l iving in your home

4 Avoid Family Claim Conflicts Communication is key Students talk with your parents before you file to see if they ar e claiming you as a dependent This is an exemption that can only appear on one tax return Create an open d ialogue about each of your tax situations to determine the smartest way for everyone to file

5 Choose the Right Filing Method for You Youve organized and communicated so now its t ime to file Ther e are pros and cons to each method of filing but Its all about your pr eference Emiddot fi ling your taxes is accurate and speedy but may pose a higher audit or security r isk because of typos or possible identity theft While most taxes can be done electronically some complicated tax situations may call for paper filing Additionally if youre a first-t ime filer you may feel more comfortable going to see a tax pr eparer in person

6 Dont Overlook Deductions Make sure youre not forgetting anything Here are some common deductions that get overlooked bull State and local taxes bull Ch ild and dependent car e credit bull Job-search expenses bull Earned income tax credit bull Char itable contr ibutions paid th rough payroll deductions

7 FIie a n Extension if You Need To Filing for an IRS extension is free when you file an extension by the April 15 deadline This gives you more time if you bull Have any m issing or inaccurate information bull Will be out of town dur ing tax season bull Simply run out of t ime
