January 8th, 2018—Classes Resume!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and that you were able
to find time to enjoy family and relax. The four weeks between Thanksgiving
and Winter Break always pass quickly due to the amount of curriculum being
taught and the various community events and celebrations occurring at our
amazing school.
I would like to begin by thanking all those parents who have already attended
parent/teacher conferences this year. Conferences are important as they al-
low teaching staff to discuss with parents the academic progress of their child
and ways that we can build the connection between learning at school and
home. It truly takes us all working together as a team to create a positive learn-
ing environment for our students. Please remember that our staff is available to
speak with parents throughout the year, and we encourage you to reach out
to us at any time. Our staff at Lawton Elementary continues to be committed
to high levels of learning for each and every student. It is important that we
work together as a team to provide the best learning environment possible
and maintain high expectations at all times. Please remember that Mrs. Todd
and I also have an open door for parents to answer questions, hear your feed-
back, or assist in addressing any concerns.
As we are in the midst of this holiday season, I encourage all of you to give the
gift of time to the ones you love. It’s so very easy to get caught up in finding
that perfect gift, when the time we spend and memories that we make to-
gether is what will truly matter from year to year. I am very grateful for the time
you allow me to spend with your children each and every day.
One Team, One Mission!

Snapshot and 5 Essentials
Surveys
Beginning January 23rd,
parents, students in grades 4
-12 and school staff will
have the opportunity to
take part in the Snapshot
Survey. The results of this sur-
vey will showcase what
makes each of our school’s unique and will be used

card that will be called the Snapshot Report. Your
input and comments are important and will play a
key role in spotlighting innovation and student
achievements.
In addition to the Snapshot Survey, students will once
again have the opportunity to participate in the 5Es-
sentials Survey. This opportunity will allow students in
grades 4-12 to share their thoughts on the important
elements of their school and classroom experiences.
The Snapshot and 5Essentials Surveys will be conduct-
ed January 23 – February 23, 2018.Participation in the
surveys provides valuable information on our school
and helps to guide school improvement. Your identi-
ty and survey responses are kept completely confi-
dential and will never be connected to you or your
child.
The Snapshot and 5Essentials Surveys will be adminis-
tered online. On January 23rd, parents will receive
the link to the Snapshot Survey. The survey link will al-
so be available on the SCPS web site. Please mark
your calendars and plan to participate in this oppor-
tunity to provide your input.

(LESA)
Cox Conserves Heroes Award Thank you to all who voted for me to win the Cox Conserves Heroes award! I
am donating $5,000 for LESA, and will find out soon if I won an additional $5,000! The money will be used to
help sustain LESA, and will also be saved to help replace the boardwalk next year.
Vegetable garden We need organic garden soil! If you can donate a bag or two, please drop it off at ei-
ther office with “Attention: Jen Ferrell”. Thank you!
After a delayed start due to Hurricane Irma, the garden is doing great! We hope to harvest peppers, nastur-
tium, tomatoes, kale, and lots of herbs before Winter Break. The broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, carrots,
radishes, and beans are growing quickly, and hydroponics lettuce is being started this month.
Chicken Garden Thank you Mrs. Beveridge’s class for planting our first “Chicken Garden”! Each child plant-
ed lettuce, sorrell, or red cabbage that will help feed our LESA chickens. They then took a LESA tour to learn
about worms, composting, bats, vegetable gardening, and butterflies. After the tour, the children went to the
pavilion to make a beautiful drawing about what they are thankful for.
Butterfly Garden Volunteer Day Saturday, December 9th from 9:30-11:30am. The weeds have gone wild! It’s
time for a community weeding day. We will weed the area, then cover it with fresh mulch donated from Tree
Monkeys. If you can help, contact [email protected] We also need donations of milkweed, pentas,
blanket flower, and other butterfly plants.
Eco Adventures Cub Club finished up the semester with lots of LESA fun! They painted rocks for borders, met
the chickens, learned about worms and worm composting, played an animal game, and had treats in the
LESA pavilion.
Lake Jessup is a heavily traveled
street. We cannot have cars
blocking the right of way. Please obey the lawful posted AM & PM No-Turn times and enter the PLC Carline in the morning and in the
afternoon from Smith Street. To
reach Smith Street from Lake
Jessup Avenue, turn right on ei-
ther Murcott Drive or Carib Lane.
Thank you for continuing to be
aware of our bike riders and
walkers who may need to cross
the street in front of you to reach
the sidewalk along Lake Jessup
Avenue.
Thank you for your continued
cooperation and patience.

Lawton is excited to have i-Ready for our students
this year! i-Ready connects data to individualized
instruction in reading and math. In order for i-
Ready to be effective students must spend 46
minutes each week in both reading and math.
We would appreciate your support in allowing
your child to work in this program at home. The i-
Ready week runs from Monday-Sunday. Please
have your child check their progress to make sure
they have 46 minutes in both reading and math
by Sunday.
KINDERGARTEN
We are looking forward to an exciting December in kin-
dergarten. Our imaginations will soar as we travel around
the world to learn the names and traditions of various De-
cember holidays. Ho-Ho-Ho what do ya know- our letters
this month are Hh and Oo!! Our sight words will be all, look,
is, her, out, and be. Please continue to review all of the
sight words with your child. Being able to recognize each
sight word will not only help develop your child’s reading;
it will help them become a more confident reader. In
math we are learning about two-dimensional and three-
dimensional shapes; as well as their attributes. Our month
will conclude with a Holiday Party. The children will rotate
throughout the kindergarten classrooms participating in
different festive activities. More information about the Holi-
day Party will be sent out soon. The kindergarten teachers
would like to thank you for your continued support! Have
a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!
1ST GRADE
Fantastic First Grade
The first grade students will be learning a lot in December!
In reading, the students will be learning to compare and
contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in
stories. They’ll also use context clues to determine the
meaning of unknown words and phrases that they may
come upon while reading. In writing, we’ll be focusing on
narrative writing; how to write a story that has a series of
events in an appropriate order with a sense of closure. The
students are continuing to strengthen their understanding
of the relationship between addition and subtraction in
math. In social studies, the boys and girls have enjoyed
learning about how times have changed by comparing
life now with that of colonial times. Then, we’ll be switch-
ing back to science to learn about force and motion.
What a busy month!
2ND GRADE
Second Grade Happenings:
We are in the home stretch of 2017, and second grade
is sliding into home plate with plenty of holiday activi-
ties. We know your children will enjoy sharing them with
you as we celebrate the wonders of December.
We sure hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
This month we are continuing to learn many new skills
and are reviewing concepts as well. Our main reading
topic will be comparing and contrasting non-fiction
texts, through the use Native American history.
Please make sure your child is reading at home for
twenty minutes each day, in addition to working on
memorizing addition and subtraction facts. Talk with
your child about which strategies work best for them
while attaining fluency in facts through twenty. We also
encourage the students to work on iReady at home for
thirty minutes per week in both math and reading (and
this includes the weekend). Also, watch out for field trip
forms coming home in January as we will be enjoying
a fun-filled trip to Fort Christmas in February. The sec-
ond grade team sure wishes all of our families a won-
derful holiday season, and many exciting things to
come in the New Year!
3RD GRADE
WOW!!! Can you believe it is already December??
Third grade has been so busy that it just blew by! We
are working on text structures and text features in our
reading block. It is amazing how the children are able
3RD CONTINUED
to work in cooperative groups and discuss the different
structures- solution/problem, description, cause/effect,
sequence, and compare/contrast. When your child is
reading informational text, ask them if they are able to
identify any of these structures. In math we continue to
work on multiplication strategies. The children should be
getting close to knowing all of their multiplication facts.
We know that when the children know their facts that
word problems and other types of math activities are
not as challenging and they are more successful. Chil-
dren can be making their own multiplication cards at
home, buy them at the dollar store, or even find a math
website that will incorporate multiplication. We also
need to be getting on I-Ready reading and math at
least 46 minutes for each subject on a weekly basis.
Each classroom works very hard on trying to meet those
minutes at school for the most part, however, we do
need your help as well at home. The weekly time frame
for getting in the minutes is Monday-Sunday. Thank you
so much for helping us out as we are learning this pro-
gram ourselves! Our third grade holiday party is on De-
cember 20th. Please be on the lookout for emails, flyers
or telephone calls on how you can help your child’s
holiday party be a success!!! 4TH GRADE
Our 4th graders really had a great time during the
Thanksgiving Feast. Thank you for all of the delicious
food and for taking time to stay and eat! In math, we
are finishing our unit on division. We have been working
hard on factors, multiples, prime and composite num-
bers, and different strategies for dividing. We will be
starting our geometry unit soon and know these kids will
hit it out of the park. In science, we have been focusing
on different kinds of energies and are looking forward to
our next unit on the force and motion. In ELA, we are so
excited to be attending our St. Augustine field trip on
December 6 th and see history in action. We are wrap-
ping up our mythology unit and will be learning about
theme with poetry and drama. In grammar, we will be
learning about plural and irregular nouns. As the holi-
days approach, we would like to take the time to wish
everyone a Happy Holiday! 5TH GRADE
Fifth graders are still going strong as we move into
2018! Currently we are working on opinion writing as
well as reasons and evidence in ELA. In Science the
students are studying force and motion as well as pre-
paring to move on to Solar System concepts. In math,
the classes are learning all things decimals! This includes
all four operations as well as word problems requiring
these types of computations. The FOCUS on Safety pro-
gram is in full swing. Please talk with your child about
what they are learning with Officer David. We continue
to encourage our fifth graders to complete 46 minutes
of iReady in both Math and Reading each
week. Please let classroom teachers know if there is
issue with your child completing it each week. Lastly,
please make sure to have
your child turn in the OHS field
trip form. We will be attend-
ing a practice of their Holiday
Showcase on December 8th.
ART CLUB
Greetings from the Art Studio! We will be having
Art Club for 3rd Graders in January. Info will be
coming home soon with your student.
Help! The art studio is in need of a few items you
may have at home and would be willing to do-
nate: slightly used coloring books, Q-tips and
newspaper.
CROSS COUNTRY
Attention all Lawton Cross
Country runners! Our first
cross country meet of the
season will be Saturday,
December 2nd, at Winter
Springs High School. Plan to
arrive by 8:00am and meet by the Lawton flag for
warm-up and walking the course. Lawton, along
with Partin and Carillon, will host the next cross coun-
try meet on Saturday, December 9th, at Hagerty
High School.
If you are interested in volunteering to help at the
Lawton cross country race, please fill out the
emailed Google Doc, or contact Mrs. Wagganer at
[email protected]. All volunteers must be
registered dividends. Go Panthers!
ROBOTICS
Lawton’s Lego robotics teams are
up and running! Hydrogators and
Water Bots are hard at work with
programming and creating their
robots in an effort to complete
the designated challenges. Both
teams are also researching their real world prob-
lems regarding water and working on some possi-
ble solutions for the world’s issues. We are excited
for our January tournament and can’t wait to test
our skills!
ECO PANTHER CLUB
In November, the Eco Panthers Club made cool
up-cycled art for our new LESA Sound Garden! In
December they will start the hy-
droponics garden, add to the
chicken garden and vegetable
garden, and make nature orna-
ments.
CHORUS NEWS
Winter Musical
"Who will come up with the
best plan for helping a strand-
ed partridge? The Four Calling
Birds? The Twelve Drummers
Drumming? Will the Cow's idea
be successful?
Come find out Tuesday evening, December 7 at
6:30pm as our 4th & 5th grade Lawton Chorus
present the musical "Party in a Pear Tree". Our
Chorus will also present two morning shows, Thurs-
day, Dec. 7 and one morning show, Friday, Dec.
8.
"Let's get Party down!" The musicals will be held in
the Little Theater.
ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
Mrs. Miller’s Odyssey Team:
“Your Name Here" is a team of 3rd, 4th, and 5th
graders who are excited to tackle problems and
think creatively! We are working on "Triathlon Trials"
for our long-term problem, and will be building a car
that can navigate and complete sports challenges.
During our weekly practices, we've had fun solving
problems like how to build a 10 foot bridge out of
unlikely materials using only one finger per hand or
imagining what our dogs would say if they could talk
- just a hint, they really want your food.
Mrs. Kee’s Odyssey Team:
Our team, the Smarties, is ecstatic to start working on
our long-term problem, Emoji, Speak for Yourself! The
team has been hard at work learning to build spon-
taneous contraptions to hold weights and keep a
soda can suspended from a fixed point. They are
also getting creative with extemporaneous speak-
ing!
Mrs. Sladek’s Team:
The Magical Savages are eventually going to work
on inventing an interstellar hangout spot. But so far,
they’ve mainly been getting to know each other
and learning to have a more focused group to ac-
complish tasks. Over time, students will build group
cohesion and develop their spontaneous building
and verbal skills.
Mrs. Maddox’s Team:
Mrs. Maddox's Master Questioners are officially going
to be swash-buckling buccaneers! What we mean is
that we have chosen our long-term problem where
we will create a "Mockumentary" on the classic story
of Treasure Island! As we work on spontaneous prob-
lems during our meetings, we are getting to know
each other and the special talents that each mem-
ber brings to the group. We are looking forward to a
great time in Odyssey together this year!
This time of year, there tend to be a lot of countdowns. How many more school days until Winter Break? How many shopping days left until Christmas? And then of course, we count down the seconds until midnight as we ring in the new year. A quick google search is likely to find the answer at any given time. You can even set up a countdown clock - there is an app for that! How about adding another
countdown? How many days until parents can have a night out while the kids are entertained with a fun evening with friends? Amidst all of the hustle and bustle of the season, why not take advantage of an evening to have a quiet dinner, see a movie, check off some things on your to-do list, or just relax? Sign up for the Parent’s Night Out Polar Express PJ Party on December 8th. It’s only a few days away!
