A note from your Pastor…

I don’t think it will come as a surprise to any of you that I consider reaching out, teaching and welcoming children to be one of the most important things in my ministry and one of the most important things that we as a faith community do.

We’ve been trying out different ways to help parents and young toddlers come to worship by offering a space for them. This ‘PrayStation’ is now at the back of the worship space with a play yard surround and specially chosen quiet toys. Parents can be nearby and more easily walk out with an especially noisy or cranky young one if need be to avoid distracting others.

But I think there is more I can do as the pastor to our youngest members. When I was a seminary intern, I developed something for children from Birth-3 years that I

called …..Little Church. And I’d like to offer here at OSLC. Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon (after nap and before supper), small children and

their parents and I will gather in the sanctuary. There will be small sized seating.

I will read a Bible story from a children’s Bible. There will be opportunities to remember our baptisms at the font. We will sing simple songs about faith. Learn simple prayers. I hope to teach faith words in American Sign Language. There will be communion for those who receive.

I’ll be sending out invitations but please let anyone you know with small children about this.

It’s a way for our youngest to learn about church, God, Jesus, and faith and to get familiar with the sanctuary, the pastor and all that we do as people of faith.

We know that the first three years of a child’s life are critical for learning…. So this is the best time to begin to keep the promises we make in baptism…

to bring them to the Lord’s house, the Lord’s supper and to read to them from the Bible and to teach them how to be people of faith.

Come and see! Fourth Sundays at 4:00pm. Sunday Sept. 23rd at 4pm! Plan on about 30 minutes.

P.S. In case you didn’t hear little Emerie K a few weeks ago; I asked what the word church meant…and she said….God loves you!

That’s why we do what we do, sisters and brothers in Christ!

Every blessing, Pastor Jan

YOUR OUTREACH TEAM MEMBERS ARE:

Maria Bouche, Ron Kuehl, Pastor Jan, and Dan and Jenny Williams

“...I was naked and you gave me clothing..” Matthew 25:35 NRSV

From the bottom of our hearts we express gratitude for those of you willing and able to

donate clothing to the Community back to School Fair this year. “Christmas in July” is

important to identified low-income families because they are then able to start the school

year off right as they endeavor to learn all they can.

Your generous donations of clothing items and gift cards enable children to do just that.

THANK YOU for loving a child you do not know. THANK YOU for being Matthew 25

people. THANK YOU for the effort to enable a child to look and feel their best, which is

critical to development for learning,

If you were unable to give for this but still wish to provide for children in the community:

Please look for an announcement/collection bin in October in the Narthex. The Outreach

Team will be facilitating offerings of new socks, underwear, and sweatpants/leggings for

children at Washington and Read Schools. Why only these two schools?: Members of our

community here at Our Savior’s associated with Washington and Read have come to us in

hopes that we can and will provide. You are always welcome to express any Oshkosh area

need and your team will consider what the church can do to help.

…at Our Saviors!

Stephen Ministry is starting! This Caring Ministry is an amazing opportunity to grow your listening skills and share your gifts. Stephen Ministry is a confidential one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in

congregations that use the Stephen Ministry Series system.

Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen

Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who

are hurting.

We will begin training Stephen Ministers on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 beginning September 18th.

If you are interested in becoming a Stephen Minister please contact Linda Tedlie at 920-410-0745 / [email protected] or Pastor Jan so we are sure to order your materials. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions! Linda Tedlie Cell: 920.410.0745 or Email [email protected]

Hallelujah! I give thanks to GOD with everything I’ve got— Wherever good people gather, and in the congregation. GOD’s works are so great, worth a lifetime of study—endless enjoyment! Splendor and beauty mark God’s craft; God’s generosity never gives out. God’s miracles are the memorial— This GOD of Grace, this GOD of Love. Psalm 106:1-3 (The Message)

The Women of Our Savior’s invite you to join us in learning about and working for the Kingdom…and MIRACLES…of God! Join a Bible Study group, a Lutheran World Relief effort,( including Quilting), a food drive, and much more! We welcome you to partner with us. Here’s a great way to start: Fall Retreat to Feature Triennial Speaker!

We are looking forward to the FALL RETREAT of the Women of the ELCA/East Central Synod of Wisconsin on September 21-22, 2018 at Imago Dei Village near Clintonville. The main speaker will be Pastor Angela Khabeb whom many of you heard preach at the closing worship service at Triennial, and at the Spring Event in Oshkosh last April. She is a spirited and joy filled woman of faith who will light up our retreat!

The theme of this year’s retreat is “Take Up Your Cross and Walk God’s Justice.” There will be two Bible studies for us on Micah 6. There will be lots of fun things to do during the free time: create a woven cross, create greeting cards used to encourage our servicemen, an in-kind project will be school kits, so bring enough items to fill one bag. (The bags are being prepared for us through a local prison.) And, if you have a favorite cross, we ask you to bring it along to display & share with everyone throughout the retreat. On Friday evening, we will have a Vespers/Campfire worship service. Pastor Angela will lead a communion worship service on Saturday.

A retreat tradition has been the Silent Auction. Please bring an item that can be put out on the Silent Auction table during the retreat. The money raised from this fun event is used to pay for the scholarships for next year’s retreat. (This is for 1

st time

attendees.) There is money currently available for scholarships for the 2018 retreat. If you’d like, you can also bring a favorite snack or treat to share between activities. Please fill out an application when you send in your registration form. Both forms can be found in this newsletter. Reformation Jeopardy was such a hit last year that you may see the game again this year. (HINT: read the Unicef version of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.) Hoping to see many of you at this fun event!

Lutheran World Relief School Kits Are NEEDED NOW!! Did you know that there are families living in such poverty around the world that they can't afford to buy necessary school supplies? As a result, many children do not have the chance to get an education – a right guaranteed to them under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and one which we take for granted. It has been said that the best anti-poverty program is good public education. Watch for sales in July and help kids go to school! Place in Narthex Basket of Promise, or in Fellowship Hall. Thanks. Items needed:

FOUR 70 sheet notebooks wide or college-ruled paper, Approx. 8 x 10 ½ (no loose leaf paper) ONE 30 centimeter ruler or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on other side. ONE Pencil sharpener ONE Pair of blunt scissors FIVE Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers FIVE Black or Blue ballpoint pens (NO GEL INK) ONE Box of 16 or 24 Crayon ONE 2 ½” Eraser

2018 WOMEN OF OUR SAVIOR’S “WELCOME PACKET” : Check it out…share it with any friend, or visitor, or someone who might like to know and be invited into all the work and fellowship of the Women of Our Savior’s. The packet includes welcoming cover letter, current Mission budget, handbook, and more! Available in the Narthex.

The next Women of Our Savior’s(WoOS) committee meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please feel free to attend!! The meeting will include planning an educational event, as well as a new “Date Night” social.

This month I'd like to highlight our large print section in the library. We have many great choices available in large print to choose from. A couple in particular that I would like you to look at are:

Montana Homecoming by Jillian Hart

This book is centered around a female character, Brooke McKaslin, who has lived away from her family for years. She comes home to support her half-sister. While at home, hiding secrets, she meets the neighbor and his lovable dog. While neither Brooke nor her neighbor, Liam, are looking for love they find each other. The main character is torn between telling her secrets, but secrets have a way of coming out on their own at the worst possible times.

This author paints such a vivid picture as she’s writing her story that you can’t help but laugh out loud and want to cry for the characters in the story. This book is also part of a series (The McKaslin Clan) and the author does a great job at including characters from other books.

Building a Perfect Match by Arlene James

This unique love story stars an ambitious lady, Petra Chatam, who is in charge of a historic hotel renovation. She dreams of becoming a hotel manager one day and hopes her ability to control this renovation will help. Well, she couldn’t predict that the carpenter, Dale, would have ideas of his own. While working together they realize they do agree on something, the things that really matter: love, faith and family. And with the help of some love minded aunts who don’t mind interfering, they soon learn that building a life together is harder than expected and takes patience among other things.

Both of these great reads are found in the library's large print section, along with many others to choose from. Happy Reading! --Leah Locke

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Cookbook

Thank you to all who helped with the cookbook in celebration of

the 150th anniversary of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church! Whether

you contributed recipes, or entered your own recipes or offered

your help in other ways, Thank You! The book will contain 401

recipes.

I have to tell you that while I was entering recipes or proofing

them, I was eager to start cooking! And…we will have a wide

variety of foods to cook!

Two things I learned: we Lutheran women cannot run a household without a 9x13 pan and

our oven must heat to 350 degrees. If we don’t have those two things, I don’t think we

could cook!

The books should be delivered the first part of October, well in time for

holiday gift giving. They should cost about $10. Debbie Kamark has

agreed to sell them at the Farmers’ market in November. Get your gift

list together because this is a great cookbook!

Thank you again for all your help!

Worship Leader Schedule

Please Note: We are making some procedural changes because it is difficult for some of our assistants to climb up and down the stairs without sturdy rails. Communion assistants (including Reader) should come to the front of the altar rails after the Lord’s prayer and wait. Do not come up to the altar. The pastor and acolyte will bring the plate of bread and the two chalices down to you. After the congregation has been served, we will serve each other, and the musician, at the front of the altar rails.
