From the Treasurer: From the Treasurer: From the Treasurer: From the Treasurer: The report this month is a mix of reasonably good numbers and other numbers that show the continuing challenges that we face as a congregation. With the help from the Foundation we are in a better position with our cash flow than we were at this time last year. This happened with the management of expenses and the fact that the capital expendi-tures we have undertaken the last several years has left the church building in better shape so we have had a year so far that has had less big expense requirements. With that said there has been a conscious effort also to contain as much as possible expenses across the board by the finance committee and the staff. The efforts by the staff are noticeable in the numbers. The challenges we have for the rest of the year are attainable. The council and finance committee are committed to do all we can to make the Foundation gifts of $120,000 which we have received last us through the end of the year. This means that we need to continue containing expenses and a challenge to the congregation to continue your generous giving and if possible to increase that giving even by a small amount, If we all do that all our challenges and goals will be met. Prayerfully submitted, Wayne Ammentorp Treasurer

Fall is upon us. A time for the harvest, crisp autumn nights, and, most likely, bad football. It is also a time to reflect upon all of the good things that God has be-stowed upon us. As you do so, we ask that you consider a donation to the Edison Park Lutheran Foundation to allow us to continue our mission to help support, sustain and grow this church. If you cannot give today, please remember that you can always make provisions in your estate planning to contribute to the Foundation. We have directors who are available to discuss how those donations can be made which may decrease or eliminate tax consequences to your estate.

Since 1965 donations to the Edison Park Lutheran Foun-dation have helped sustain the life of Edison Park Luther-an Church. Since it was established, over $2,000.000 have been gifted to EPLC to sustain and grow its minis-try. While there have been significant donations made throughout the history of the Foundation, EVERY gift matters.

Please ask a Foundation Director if you would like to know more. Directors are: Dale Ammentorp, Joe Bartel, Barry Bleeker, Gary Duszak, Kurt Gustafson, Monika Hemm, Rick Janci, Wayne Oberschelp, Alice Rybak, Klay Schmeisser, Mark Dupke and Paul Speciale. Help us con-tinue to sow the seeds which will continue to produce great harvests.

Dear Friends, In the last couple weeks, I’ve found myself thinking more, and talking more, about heaven…I’m sure it’s probably because we’ve had three dear folks in hospice, and as we’ve visited, prayed and shared the sacrament togeth-er, our conversations often involve a discussion of what Heaven might be like. As we realize the end of our earthly life is drawing near, our eyes begin to look to-ward our heavenly home and the promises God has giv-en us. Many of you know that I recently moved back to my childhood home. I’ve been working on restoring the home for over 5 years. There were many challenges along the way, and sometimes I wondered if it would ever really get finished and I’d be able to move in. In many ways it seemed like an impossible goal. But once I moved in, I knew I was “home.” And an interesting thing happened. The other house that I had enjoyed for 23 years suddenly lost its appeal and felt empty. And I be-gan to think about our heavenly home. In this life we face many trials, but God has promised us something greater than we can ever imagine. And when we get there, we’ll know “we’re home.” Trust that God keeps his promises.

I am proud to announce that I was the recipient of a “Dream A Little Dream” Award again this year. The Chi-cagoland Lutheran Educational Fund asks teachers throughout Chicago to submit essays on what types of items might make their teaching wishes come true. Sev-eral educators from this pool of Lutheran Schools are chosen and presented with awards at the Annual Teach-er Recognition Dinner held in the spring. I will be pur-chasing STEM learning kits for the classroom with the award.

In October we will discuss Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter which is the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962...and is rekin-dled in Hollywood fifty years later.

Feed My Starving Children Intergenerational Service Event @ FMSC - Schaumburg, IL

1072 National Parkway Schaumburg, IL 11:30 - 1:30

(Meet at church at 10:30 to carpool to the event.) We have 25 openings for this service event to package food to distribute to God’s starving children who are hungry in both body and spirit. The video on the FMSC website starts with this stagger-ing statistic: “Today, more the 6,200 children will die around the world due to hunger related causes:” How does FMSC help? The process is simple: Donations are given by people to fund the meal ingredi-ents. Volunteers hand-pack the meals. Meals are then donated to FMSC food partners around the world, where children are fed and lives are saved! This is a perfect opportunity for individuals and families to come together and make a difference in the lives of hungry children. Children ages 5 and up are welcome to attend. (Children under 5 are not allowed in the pack-ing room.) All children 18 and under must be accompa-nied by an adult.

Please sign-up as soon as possible at the Welcome Table for this service opportunity. The names of attendees need to be sent to FMSC prior to the event. We look forward to having a full contingent of eager volunteers willing to help out on the 9th. (Although a donation is not expected, you might consid-er donating the cost of a restaurant meal to FMSC. Donations can be brought to the event or given to the Hospitality Table before the 9th, if you’re unable to at-tend, but would like to offer your support.)

*SECOND OPPORTUNITY* *SECOND OPPORTUNITY* *SECOND OPPORTUNITY* *SECOND OPPORTUNITY* Cards for Servicemen and Servicewomen

Recently our men and women in the military are experi-encing some depression due to uncertainty in the world conditions facing them. We would like all EPLC members to prepare a card of comfort and thought for our men and women who are serving us. Suggestions: The card could be store bought or hand-made. Tell them you are a member of Edison Park Lutheran Church and express your thoughts of comfort toward them. Then place your card in a sealed envelope and write “US Service Member” on the front of it. Deliver the card to EPLC Welcome Desk by September 10th. The cards will then be delivered to the USO at O'Hare Airport by Veteran’s Task Force members. Our service members are in our prayers always. You can be assured that your card will go a long way towards easing their depression. THANK YOU for your continued generosity and thought-fulness in reaching out to others!

Holy Family School Supplies/Bucks for Holy Family School Supplies/Bucks for Holy Family School Supplies/Bucks for Holy Family School Supplies/Bucks for Book Collections Takes a 21st Century Book Collections Takes a 21st Century Book Collections Takes a 21st Century Book Collections Takes a 21st Century TurnTurnTurnTurn The end of July has traditionally been a time when EPLC has collected school supplies for Holy Family School for several years. As sales on school supplies begin appear-ing in newspaper flyers, you may want to pick-up a few items that always appear in the supply list such as cray-ons, markers, one-subject notebooks, 2-pocket folders, pens and pencils. The past couple of years, we have also supported a grade level purchase for much needed text-books. (Last year, we helped the primary department purchase reading materials.) We have an audacious goal to aim for as we reach the children of Holy Family School. We need YOU! We hope to raise enough for 37 Chromebooks for 8th graders, and staff. The cost per Chromebook is $281.46/ea. Mark your gift Holy Family. With God, all things are possible. Let’s reach this goal of $10,414.02 for our partner in ministry since the mid-1980s.

A great cause, for a great school that changes countless lives in our city. Thanks!

Service Project to Assist The Night Service Project to Assist The Night Service Project to Assist The Night Service Project to Assist The Night MinistryMinistryMinistryMinistry On Sunday, October 22nd, we will travel to the Humboldt Park Community from 4:00-6:00p along with the Night Ministry to offer a meal, warm smile, and greeting/conversation to those in need. The Night Minis-try’s Health Outreach bus is also available to provide health care while volunteers provide the meal and a hu-man connection. Shoppers are needed to purchase items and bake for those meals. Please take a sticky note(s) from the board in Nordblad Hall to help out with this. All items should be returned by Wednesday, October 18th. We will need 6-8 volunteers to make hot dogs, wrap them in foil, and put together 150 sack dinners. You should meet in the kitchen at 1:45p on Sunday, October 22nd. Finally, a group of 4-6 adults are needed to travel to the Humboldt Park Community to serve the meal on October 22nd and should meet at church at 3:15p. Thanks very much for your support of the Night Ministry and for living, loving and serving as Jesus did. (Look for our annual stocking stuffer collection in November)
