Friends and Trail users, in 2015 we witnessed our Katy Trail usage continue to grow with new residential and commercial development adjacent to the Trail. This new traffic also brings concerns over safety issues. Also, additional traffic has created more wear and tear on the Trail.
The Friends of the Katy Trail Board has recognized the concerns of our growing pains. Mid-year a Vision Committee Planning Team was assembled made up of board members, Trail users, and stakeholders along the trail. They were charged with enhancing the Katy Trail brand to create a safer and more inviting trail; amplifying the diverse landscapes; expanding the Trail’s amenities and programming, and fully integrating the Trail into the community. I am happy to report that the team has accomplished that directive and MORE! You should begin witnessing some of their work by late 2016.
The Katy Trail is not only one of Dallas’ greatest recreational amenities but one of Dallas’ greatest economic drivers. The Friends of the Katy Trail is proud to be contracted with the City of Dallas to manage, maintain, and oversee the Trail. We encourage and expect continued growth along the Trail.
Your past support has been greatly appreciated. We continue to monitor future growth and prepare for the increased responsibilities that come with it. We want to keep the Katy Trail a wonderful one of a kind linear park for all to enjoy. I hope we can expect your support to continue and grow with us in the future. I look forward to seeing you on the Trail SOON!

how you can help
about theKatyTrail
The Katy Trail is a beautifully maintained, community-
supported recreational pathway nestled right in the
heart of Dallas. The City of Dallas owns the land,
but it is private donations that make the Katy Trail
beautiful. Friends of the Katy Trail works year-round
to keep the Trail in peak condition. We maintain
and landscape the paths, provide lighting, signage,
benches and fountains, hire safety patrols, and pay
all utility expenses. Without Friends, there would be
no Katy Trail. And without donations from members,
corporate sponsorships, and the annual fundraisers,
the Trail would go nowhere.
Make sure your membership is current.Participate in our fundraisers like the Michelob Ultra Katy 5K.Volunteer either on the Katy Trail or at one of our events. Join our volunteer list via our website or contact our office.Stay in the know. Sign up for our e-news via our website and be sure to follow us on social media.
Between light repairs and electricity expenses, Friends of the Katy Trail spent $23,935 to keep the Katy Trail well lit in the evenings and early morning.
To ensure the Katy Trail stays safe, we employ off-duty Dallas Police Bike Officers to ride the Trail during peak hours. In 2015 we spent $57,000 on security patrols.
Even the little things add up. Dog waste bags cost Friends of the Katy Trail almost $3,000 each year. A price we are happy to pay if that means
everyone is cleaning up after their dog!
Our water bill was over $8,000 in 2015.
Landscaping costs is one of our larger expenses totaling $91,333. This includes new plants along Katy Trail and daily care and maintenance.
