P R H Wake me up Lord so that the evil of racism finds no home within me. Keep watch over my heart Lord and remove from me any barriers to your grace. Fill my spirit Lord so that I may give services of justice and peace. Clear my mind Lord and use it for your glory. And finally, remind me Lord that you said, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.” Amen.

All parishioners should have received their envelope packets for St. Oscar Romero Parish. If you have not received them by now, that may mean that you are not registered in the parish. If you want to join the parish, please email Patty at [email protected] or register online at romeroparish.org.

Also email Patty if you received two envelope packets as that may mean you are registered at two church sites and that needs to be corrected. If you have moved recently, please make sure your envelopes have the correct address.

Finally, please make checks payable to St. Oscar Romero Parish. Thank you for your generosity.

H M A FRATERNITY OF PRIESTS ALTERNATIVE

TO HEALING MASSES Dear brothers and sisters, Many have expressed their desire (and perhaps a need)

for the return of Healing Masses sponsored by the Fraternity of Priests. We've prayed, discerned and discussed how we might meet your needs, and for us to live the gifts we have received through the Holy Spirit.

To this end, we have (at this time) decided to pray for "Words of Knowledge" each Wednesday following our Holy Hour and Adoration. This is akin to when the priests prayed prior to a Healing Mass, asking for insight as to God's plans to touch His people for that night and beyond. What we will miss is the personal contact that often times reveals the fire of the Holy Spirit coming upon and working through us.

On your part, active participation is necessary. The first need from you is faith that God hears your prayers and will answer for your betterment. The second is, if possible, prayer anytime between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Words of Knowledge we receive will be disseminated through emails of individuals we had gathered at prior Healing Masses, emails sent to us, and on the Pittsburgh-Greensburg Fraternity of Priests Facebook page. In time, we may include a YouTube viewing with priests reading the Words of Knowledge. We ask that you share this information with others throughout the diocese for their benefit. And when you receive a healing -- please inform us so all can share in God's goodness.

Finally, you may ask for special prayer intentions -- such as a healing of cancer -- by contacting one of the priests listed below, using our diocesan emails, by Tuesday evening of each week. When doing this please be as specific as possible, including at least a first name of the person needing healing. "A special intention" or "an end to the coronavirus" are not specific intentions.

Please pray for us as we do for you. Members of the Fraternity of Priests [email protected], [email protected],

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Back in June, a good friend sent me a video of

something amazing. It seems an Amish farmer wanted to move his large pole barn to another place on his property. So, does he call in a moving company with heavy equipment? No! Instead he calls on about 300 of his closest friends, and they together actually lift the skeleton of the massive structure and walk it to the new location!

Viewed from a distance, the men’s black clad legs are seen standing out from the bottom of the red building as they walk in unison following the directions of a leader. It’s as if the building becomes a mammoth centipede! The video is worth downloading. For one thing, you will see the importance of “lending a hand” to a friend in need.

“Lending a hand” is precisely what Our Lord does in this week’s chosen Gospel passage. A storm at sea is raging. Jesus has left His prayer place on the mountain and suddenly appears walking on the waves! When Peter catches sight of Him, He jumps out of the crowded boat onto the water and he takes a few tentative steps toward His Master. But all of a sudden, logic kicks in; awareness steps up, and Peter loses his confidence and begins to sink. Only when Jesus lends a hand to lift his friend up does the crisis end. (I often picture Jesus with a smile on His handsome Face, maybe even with an added chuckle, as color returns to Peter’s scared face as he stands solidly again.

Of course, it is the perfect opportunity for Our Lord to remind Peter that his faith needs a little updating. Some added depth. More strengthening private prayer.

Naturally, the Holy Spirit wants us to ask ourselves some probing questions as He presents this well-known gospel scene. When life puts us in some “rough water” we know who we can depend on. Such “stormy seas” will come to nearly all of us at one time or another. So, do we turn to God when it happens, or do we rely only on our

instinct for self-preservation? Or the cleverly concocted myth of self-reliance that we eschews help? That Amish farmer knew better with his problem.

Without belaboring the obvious, I trust that we have all learned a lot about ourselves and our dependency upon each other during these months of the pandemic, with the probability of more months to come. Hopefully, you and I as believers have stepped up our reliance on God. We know in a brand new way that some problems are too much for our finite fiber to cope with, much less to solve. We need a helping hand. God’s is the best.

Maybe you don’t have 300 friends to call on to help solve your problem. But you do have One better than those by far. He once said: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.” He never reneges on a promise, and is always there to lend His most powerful Hand. After all, “problems are only opportunities with thorns on them.” ( Hugh Miller, Scottish scientist, d.1856.) God love you and give you His peace!

Reading I: I Kings 19: 9a, 11-13a The Lord orders Elijah to act as His servant. Then the

Lord teaches the prophet that He comes in a “tiny whisper,” and not in the expected ways of wind, earthquake and fire that Elijah might expect.

Reading II: Romans 9: 1-5 Paul laments that the Jews, his own brothers and

kinsmen, have not accepted Jesus as the Messiah. Therefore, they have not entered into the new Covenant with Christ.

The Gospel: Matthew 14: 22-33 Jesus’ solitary prayer models something for us,

namely taking time out for silent solitary prayer each day. Then we hear of Jesus’ famous walk on the water, prompting an impulsive Peter to jump in to greet his Lord, only to weaken through doubt. Jesus offers him a helping hand with a smile.

SCAM ALERT

If you receive a text or email apparently from a member of the staff, often claiming to come from Father Carmen, asking for you to reply, or to send gift cards, but the phone number doesn’t match that staff member’s phone number on the back of the bulletin, it is a scam. Block that number and delete that text and email. You will know it’s not from Father Carmen if it is signed something like: “...Rev. Carmen D’Amico”. He doesn’t sign texts that way and he won’t ask you for gift cards.

C S D C 19 Until we return to normal collections at all Masses,

these are two options for you to consider to support your parish during these unprecedented times: 1. There will be a basket placed somewhere on or near the

altar during Masses in which to place envelopes. 2. You can either mail or drop off your envelopes in the

mail slot at any of the parish offices. 3. If you have online banking you can send your

contribution using your bank’s bill pay option. Give the bank the church name and address and the bank will send the payment directly to the church.

If you have any questions, please contact the administrative office at 724-745-6560. We are very grateful for your generous support. Please know of our continued prayers for you and for your loved ones.

The Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce hosts a Farmers Market in the St. Patrick Church parking lot from 3 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday through September 1. Call Lonnie at 724-745-1812 for information.
