A Permanent Quadrat in Wind-thrown Red Beech Forest,

EgJinton Valley, Fiordland.

A. F. MARK AND G. T. S. BAYLIS

Botany Department. University of Otago

(Received 27 September 1971)

We record the establishment in December. 1969. of a permanent quadrat in an area of red beech forest that was almost completely wind-thrown by a severe storm which swept southern New Zealand during late October. 1968.

On a permanently marked 20 X 50 m plot adjacent to the Milford Sound highway at Mirror Lake. the surviving vegetation. chiefly herbs. shrubs and young stems of red and silver beech. has been recorded for each of 40 subplots. Locations of beech poles (stems 3 m tall to 10 cm d.b.h.) and occasional surviving trees were plotted.

The information has been deposited at Fiordland National Park Headquarters. Te Anau and in the library of this department to be available for anyone wishing to follow the secondary succession.
