WHAT AREPESTICIDES?
2
Pesticides….• -icide
• = TO KILL!
3 4
Natural? Synthetic?
Are pesticides natural?
5
Pesticides can be….
• ORGANIC - OMRI
• SYNTHETIC
• NATURAL
• COMMERCIAL
• CONSUMER
• Restricted Use (RUP)
• Over The Counter
(OTC)
• Ready To Use (RTU)
• All are intended to be harmful
• ALL require Caution!
• Let’s Reduce our Risks!

Easy to become complacent about pesticides…
• It’s sold in stores it must be safe.
7
Easy to become complacent about pesticides…
• Ready to Use = Safe
8
Easy to become complacent about pesticides…
• If I can use it on green grass, I can use it on green beans.. NO!
9
Easy to become complacent about pesticides…
• ”Been doing this for years”
• “Heard it all before…”• “this is just common
sense”
10
Easy to become complacent about pesticides…
• Out of Time

1) Identify the Problem Correctly Anyone

3) Chemical Options if Necessary
18
Chemical Options Require
1. Select proper product
2. Wear proper protection
3. Apply responsibly in
accordance with label
4. THE LABEL IS THE LAW-
read it carefully

BUT WE KNOW…
Sometimes Chemical Controls are Necessary

READ LABEL: Label is Law“It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with it’s labeling”
Use that’s “inconsistent with the label” may result in penalties under state or federal law

5
“INCONSISTENT” with the label
You cannot:•Use on a site that is not on the label•Use higher rates•Use at more frequent intervals•Ignore directionsDisregard protective equipment

THE LABELTHINGS TO LOOK FOR
32
HOST and PEST
33
What’s Missing?
34
LABEL: Make sure it’s the proper product
• “My neighbor told me to get roundup for that weed…”
• SOOO which one are you gonna pick?

LOOK FOR:
Active Ingredients
Active ingredient(s) (AI) compound that controls pests
Inert ingredients (Other) often not specified
surfactants
wetting agents
water and/or petroleum
filler

FORMULATIONS

More formulation considerations
HERBICIDES:
- Contact versus Systemic- CONTACT = burn down. Only
kills green tissue that contacts chemical
- SYSTEMIC= transport. Goes from root to shoot.
- SELECTIVE = affects only certain plant types
- BROAD SPECTRUM = NON-SELECTIVE

LABEL: Signal Words•Label Signal Words correspond to four toxicity categories•Most sensitive route of entry determines the Signal Word on the pesticide label•Immediate “poisoning” or harm•Acute toxicity symptoms show up in 24-48 hours or less
DANGERLD ≤50 mg/kg
I. Highly Toxic
WARNINGLD 50-500 mg/kg
II.ModeratelyToxic
CAUTIONLD 500-5000 mg/kg
III. Slightly Toxic
CAUTIONLD >5000 mg/kg
IV.PracticallyNon-toxic

WHO YA GONNA CALL!????
Check Label BEFORE the emergency.
Can’t read if you get it in your eye.
Have a copy of label that can be presented to doctor in event of emergency
