The Railway Age dawned in India on 16th. April 1853, when the first train ran from Bombay to Thana, a distance of 21 miles(33.81 Km.)
The first proposals for construction of railways in India were presented in 1844 to East India Company in London.
Indian Railway is an Indian state-owned enterprise, owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the world's largest railway networks comprising 115,000 km of track over a route of 65,436 km and 7,172 stations.
INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN RAILWAYS

PROBLEMS WITH THE INDIAN RAILWAYS
The main problems with the Indian railways are :
Irresponsibility of people. It starts with the fault of the people only. Corruption. The money invested for the development of railways is eaten by the corrupt people . Delayed trains. The lesser the time spent in trains , the less will be the production of garbage. Non- pro active employees. The employees on the station don’t pay attention to what the people are doing. Poor infrastructure. The design of railway coaches is very old and not modified according to the needs of the people.Poor garbage maintenance system.Traditional methods are used ,not scientific.Use of traditional toilets .Indian railways use old methods of waste disposal in this 21st Century .

HUMAN EXCRETAL PROBLEMS The seemingly innocent actions of the Railways contaminate the
environment and promote unsanitary conditions, the very small strides made in sanitation & community health, magnify the propensity to spread diseases including Dengue and Chikungunya, the threat of which is very devastating for the whole country. The action of the Indian Railways in dumping human excreta and sewerage into the open environment is patently illegal and a direct infringement of the right to life of the People of India .

After the waste is flushed from the toilet, it gets
fragmented in very small particles and mixed with the atmosphere, and contributing to the air pollution and proving harmful for the biosphere.
If the persons faecal matter is infected one, then the persons who are inhaling the air are bound to get infected with disease like diarrhoea, Cholera, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, other water borne diseases and parasitic infections

POLLUTION FROM GOODS TRAIN
Environmental problems mainly arise during handling and transportation of pollution intensive commodities such as coal, iron ore, cement, fertilisers, petroleum etc. Fugitive emission, emissions of gases or vapours from pressurised equipment due to leaks and various other unintended or irregular releases of gases, is also caused by these commodities. So far, no standard instructions regarding packing and transporting of different kinds of goods have been detailed by the Railways in their codes and manuals. The Central Pollution Control Board was also found wanting as it issued no specific guidelines on this

A government panel report said that human waste from open-discharge toilets used by passengers is damaging tracks and associated infrastructure.
Many passengers ignore requests to not use toilets when trains halt. Apart from the unbearable stench it creates, the practice leads to clogging of rail lines at busy stations.
The passengers throw away wastes like plastic bottles, carry bags, wrappers, disposable cups and plates through the windows of the moving trains.

Probable Solutions To These Problems
The measures that can be taken by Indians are :
Use of bio toilets in trains.

Use of vaccum toilets

We should follow the four R principle for maintenance of waste.
The 4 R’s Principle

Recycling Of Waste Material

Giving of two , garbage collector bags with the tickets so that people would throw in those bags. Cleaning system and garbage disposal system should be provided on railway platforms.
Some holy pictures and some teachings from holy books would be helpful in maintaining the cleanliness of the trains.
Strict laws should be made to punish the people who will throw waste at unwanted places.
Other possible solutions
![Page 23: A pilot project for indian railways](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032513/55d25641bb61eb98638b4659/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Fast moving trains ,less time of stoppage on platforms , time management for trains.
A team of active members should be employed .
Rewards and awards should be given to motivate the pro-active team.
Outsourcing of housekeeping services – Hiring some private companies for
maintaining cleanliness in trains.

Some informative/instructive boards should be pasted on railway platforms and inside coaches to spread awareness.
Informative Boards

Garbage bins should be kept in every coach and also at the platforms.

Indian railways are the lifeline of India. Being the largest employer of the world, it carries lakhs of people in a single day. The cleanliness and hygiene of railways means providing a safe environment for lakhs of commuters. If some simple steps and efforts are taken up by the government as well as the people themselves, even the Indian Railways can become one the cleanest and safest means of transport in the world.
