Wise Words of the Month:

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

-Mahatma Gandhi

The redevelopment of Cherrywood village to a super centre is currently underway as we plan to make the site a central hub for our clients and residents Community Access Programs.

The redevelopment includes a number of changes such as a petting zoo containing a variety of farm animals, swimming pool, secret sensory garden, a new undercover bbq area, liberty swing and a range of activities such as putt putt, bike tracks, outdoor giant chess- snakes and ladders & more.

Although it is still only early stages the village already has a lot of hype and excitement built up, attracting interest from a number of volunteers eager to lend a hand as well as Coca Cola and Bunnings offering $10,000 in products so far.

Third Group Of Residents Make Their Move

This week eight out of ten residents Colleen, Jean, Peter, Mark, Stephen, Michael, Kenneth and John moved into their group home in Penrith.

Everyone was eagerly finishing the final part of packing at Cherrywood including bidding farewell to the other residents while keenly waiting for the removalist, then enjoyed setting up their furniture and providing tours to everyone who turned up to help out.

All eight residents can’t wait for the last two to move in next week!

On Saturday 10th September the carers from Accommodation were treated to a River Cruise, on the Nepean Belle.

The boat cruised up and down the River enjoying a scrumptious 3 course meal including pumpkin soup, lamb shanks and panna cotta!

This was a great time to get to know our residents families in an informal environment. The cruise was enjoyed by all, with special mention going to the delicious food.

During the cruise family members pointed out places of interest and other new adventures Afford can explore in the future.

We would like to thank all the carers who came along and made it a night to remember!

Getting to Know Steve And Casey

concerned what lay beyond school for Nathan. Steve decided to dedicate his career to provide a better quality world for people with disability joining Civic Disability Services as CFO and after a year becoming CEO, a role he held for 3 years transforming the performance of the organization. Afford approached Steve to consider joining Afford as CEO which he did in March 2015. In 18 months our performance has been dramatically transformed and we are now financially strong and NDIS ready. The financial transformation over the last 18 months has made it possible to open great new programs such as Club Afford and Afford Carers’ which provides a number of social outings for our clients and carers respectively. Also, Afford Getaways offers great holidays to places all over the world such as Disneyland and the Gold Coast, as well as expanding other services all over Sydney. Steve is also looking at turning the Cherrywood centre into a super site when all clients move into their new group homes which will include a petting zoo, sensory garden, pool and much more. Further, it has now been possible to invest in properties for 3 new Day Program sites in the last 2 months. Afford’s investment in the new Group Homes is $8mil and we have paid off the loans to fund these houses over the past year. This is just the start of what’s to come as Steve aims to help people with disability achieve extraordinary things!

Casey has worked all through the disability sector starting out as a Lifestyle Assistant, during which she helped a range of clients achieve extraordinary things. One of many examples include a client with minimal social skills and high behavioral problems confined behavioral problems confined to a lifestyle centre throughout the duration of their day. Casey believed this client could contribute greatly within their local community with the right support.

Casey took it upon herself to help this client achieve their goal of independence by teaching them how to catch public transport including reading timetables and numerous trips into busy Sydney areas. The client is now very active within their community, participating in social programs such as bowling and nice group outings to the park. The client’s parents couldn’t contain their tears of joy after seeing their child now actively smiling and participating in social outings, which they “owe all to Casey’s support”.

Now as the Executive Manager of Client Services, Casey aims to teach this philosophy to all and maximise independence for all our residents’ lives.

With 2 close family members with intellectual disabilities, Steve joined the disability sector with a mission to enhance the lives and supports of people with disability. Steve is also the carer for his parents with his dad suffering from dementia.Seeing his nephew quite well supported through his childhood by the Dept. of Education, Steve’s family were always
