RATIONALE FOR EMPLOYINGA POINTS SYSTEMAwarding points to PYRAMID GROUPS can help:
▲ keep control of the children;
▲ add motivation to tasks;
▲ add an extra layer of excitement to the club;
▲ show the children that you value them and what
they bring to PYRAMID ROCK.
PITFALLS TO AVOIDDangers of running a points system are that:
▲ points have too high a profile;
▲ competition become more important than
participation;
▲ children feel deflated if they do not ‘win’.
Carefully employed, the awarding of group points
can make a positive contribution to your holiday
club.
WHAT TO AWARD POINTS FORAward points for:
▲ Remembering memory verses
▲ Attendance
▲ Bringing a friend
▲ Bouncing Benjamin (eg most outrageous dance
of the day!)
▲ Joseph mega-game (eg five points per picture
they remember)
▲ Games and craft activities
▲ Captain Ketchup’s bin contributions
▲ For following instructions!
It is better not to give points for things that are
based on academic ability or Bible knowledge. In
that way the receiving of points is achievable by
all.
WHEN HAS A GROUP ‘WON’?
END OF EACH DAYThe points only count for one day and the
members of the winning group are given a small
prize each at the end of the session. Children are
immediately rewarded and different groups can win
each day! With careful points awarding, you should
be able to have at least five groups as daily
winners over the week!
END OF THE WEEKThe points are counted up over the week and one
team is declared the winner at the end of the final
session. However, there is no immediate reward
and only one group can count themselves as
winners!
You could employ a mixture of both of course!
POSSIBLE PRIZES▲ Sweets (an immediate favourite with children,
but they don’t last long!);
▲ Other small presents eg erasers, pencils etc
(available from Christian bookshops);
▲ PYRAMID ROCK goodies (see CPO
merchandise);
▲ More substantial prizes like Christian books,
Bibles etc.
AN INTERESTINGALTERNATIVEYou could award each child individual points. At
the end of the week, they end up with an individual
point’s total. The points then effectively become
tokens and the children can trade these in for a
selection of suitable Christian books and
mementoes of the week. Alongside this, individual
points are added to get a group total. The group
total is just for fun and no prizes are awarded for it.
This idea does work well!
CONCLUSIONEach club is different and will have its own specific
needs and eccentricities! However, an appropriate
level of fun competition could help make
PYRAMID ROCK even more exciting than it would
be anyway!
