C4D has developed a framework for incorporating research data metadata into CERIF, enabling research

organisations and researchers to more easily discover and utilise existing and future research datasets. A subject-

specific demonstrator in the area of marine sciences has been developed and verified at the three partner HEIs. It is

built upon the existing IRIOS platform, which itself extends the Universities for the North East Information System (UNIS).

Contributed to the extension of CERIF to support research data metadata

Worked with providers of systems including Pure and ePrints to ensure

that the developed metadata standards are available to as wide a range

of institutions as possible

Extended IRIOS to support:-

Storage of metadata via manual entry or CERIF import

Search metadata via ad-hoc queries or saved parameters

Link metadata to related grants

Export metadata to CERIF for use in CERIF-compliant systems

All UK Research Councils expect significant datasets deriving from their research to be preserved, alongside sufficient metadata to

enable the data to be understood and discovered. Three Councils (NERC, ESRC, MRC) recommend

specific metadata discovery standards.
