The world lost a great husband,
father, teacher, coach, and man on
July 29th. Ben was a man of integrity
and example that touched so many
people over the course of his life. His
endeavors as a coach and teacher
left a lasting legacy in the lives of
many. As we begin the process of
healing it is important to honor the
legacy of Coach McIvor. His family
deserves a share of the many great
memories that we share with Ben. If
you have a specific memory or story
that stands out about Coach McIvor
we ask that you write it down for the
family. This can be about an important
speech he shared, prank he played,
insight or advice he provided, a funny
story he was a part of, or a time he pro-
vided a helping hand. Please write down
a memory and send it to
[email protected]. The stories
will be complied and provided to the
McIvor family.
On August 21st Mrs. Green's homeroom went out
to the basketball court to view the par-
tial solar eclipse. We used solar viewing glasses
and took turns looking at the Sun and discussed
the motion of the Sun, Earth, and Moon during
a solar eclipse.
Students and staff
were treated to a
natural, if cloudy, light
show on August 21
when the US got to
view a total solar
eclipse.

For some of the teachers and staff, this may
seem like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
While partial eclipses happen frequently, an
eclipse of this nature is rare. The most recent
of this kind was February 26, 1979.
We will not have to wait quite as long
for the next one, however. The next
total solar eclipse visible in the Unit-
ed States will be occur on April 8,
2024.
The Glendale High Golf team is once again the largest in the district. Be-
cause Coach Stafford does not cut players, all who try out make the team. A
golf team usually consists of 5 players. Therefore most coaches cut their
roster down to 6 or 7 golfers. Coach Stafford prefers to have all who try out
on the team so they can experience team, friendship, competition and a fun
time. The more students who come out for golf, the more fun it is as a team.
And, the more friends you get to make. Another reason for the awesome
turnout, year after year, is the current players talking about how much fun
they had being on the team. A concern new players have is always about
the equipment needed to play golf. No worries, we supply everything a
player would need to play this great game. Coach Stafford also assures stu-
dents that they don't have to know anything about golf because he promises
to make you a better player.
From Your School Counselors:
Seniors are busy already! Parents of seniors got the
jump on how to pay for college before school be-
gan. Presenters from Glendale Community College
reviewed the financial aid process and will follow up with
several financial aid events this fall. All seniors will be
completing the FAFSA (Free Application
for Federal Student Aid) with their parents on campus,
with expert help! Keep an eye out for a mailing home
with dates and times. The FAFSA can provide up to
$6000 for students to continue their education after
graduation! This funding is in the form a Pell Grant and
is never paid back. Please plan to attend an event to
get all of your questions answered and to complete the
application.
Seniors and juniors participated in conferences in Sep-
tember with their counselors to review their high school
credits, transcripts, and diploma requirements. Seniors
were giving information about applying to colleges and
universities and juniors chose classes for senior
year. In addition, juniors spent time reviewing possible
careers and schools using AZCIS, Arizona Career Infor-
mation System. We would love to share these re-
sources with parents as well in one of the following
ways:

AFTER
SCHOOL:
CLUBS
AND MORE
日本語はべんきょしましよう! This year the Comic and Anime Club is learning Japanese from Mrs. Crooks, a freshman English teacher who is also certi-fied in Japanese and studied Japa-nese abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Osaka, Japan. The club meets on the first and third Thursday of the month. The first half of the meeting is a Japanese lesson, and the second half is spent watching Anime or reading comic books.
The first two Japanese lessons have focused on learning hiragana, the most basic type of Japanese characters, plus some greetings and basic vocabulary. Students are having a blast learning how to write Japanese charac-ters and pronounce new words. Our next lessons will focus on reading and writing all hiragana characters and learning new vocab-ulary and expressions.
Why Japanese? Most Anime is produced in Japan and the characters speak Japanese. The club usually watches Anime dubbed in English, but some of the students like it better in Japanese. (with subtitles). GHS Comic & Anime club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month in room 214 right after school.
