2 CARDINAL MATTERS Fall 2011

Dear Members of the Cardinal Newman School Community,

As the 2011–2012 school year—the 50th anniversary of the CardinalNewman School—begins, it is wonderful to have the opportunity tocommunicate with our many alumni and friends. I feel this yearholds great promise and has the potential to be one of the best yearsyet for the CN community. Our enrollment is strong—in spite of the difficult economy—and we continue to move forward in our efforts to bring quality Catholic education to theyoung women and men of the greater Columbia community.

In my five years as Principal of Cardinal Newman School, it has become very evident tome that we have much to celebrate. When a graduating class earns almost $5 million inmerit-based scholarships, it is a real testimonial to their alma mater. Likewise, during2010–2011, our students collectively gave over 13,000 hours of service to the greaterColumbia community. They are living examples of the Cardinal Newman School belief thatwe are all God’s children and therefore responsible for each other.

The value of a Cardinal Newman education is further evidenced through its manysuccessful alumni. In early October, we had the opportunity to induct the initial membersinto the Cardinal Newman Alumni Hall of Fame. The women and men that were awardedthis distinction distinguished themselves in a variety of ways and have made a real differencein our world as they daily lived and continue to live out the mission of Cardinal NewmanSchool. They stand as wonderful examples for our students! We hope you will join us incongratulating them on their accomplishments as we present them to you in this issue ofMATTERS.

None of these wonderful accomplishments would be possible if not for the strong andloyal support that you—the parents, alumni and friends of Cardinal Newman School—provide. It is a symbol of your belief in the mission of our school and all who are a part ofit, and I promise that all of us at Cardinal Newman School will continue to work diligentlyto ensure that CN continues to grow and prosper in that mission and tradition.

On behalf of our students, our faculty and our staff, I thank you for helping CardinalNewman School to be the best that it can be! We are truly blessed!

In our Lord’s Peace,

Jacqualine KasprowskiPrincipal

4 CARDINAL MATTERS Fall 2011

Before the trip to France, we counted down thedays on Mr. Perry’s white board, starting at someridiculous number like “172 days until France.”When we (Haley McDougle, Sean Nottoli, JakeWilson, Kae Eppink, Farris Jones, Andrea Martin,Rebecca Brown, Alexa Barnes, P.A. Raad, Mr. Perry, and I) finally all met at the airport, I felt like I waswalking on air. A few of us had never even left thecountry before, and we all tried to remain calmwhile waiting for what felt like forever in theairport. Once we were on the flight over, we alltried to sit quietly; sitting still for eight hours ishard to ask of a group of teens and a Frenchteacher who is just as excited as them to be goingon the trip.

Once in France, we saw everything that we could, which I’ve heard (and feel) is never enough. P.A. andJake quickly became known for haggling withvendors who were outside of Paris’ great landmarks

(The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Versailles to name a few). The city itself is beautiful, almost overwhelmingly so,and almost every native spoke English, which was arelief to those of us whose French was not verystrong. Jetlag was quickly remedied with a much-needed night’s sleep, and we left Paris for the coastalcity of Biarritz, which is located on the AtlanticOcean at the foothills of the Pyrenees. The trip wasfive hours on the TGV (Europe’s fastest train), and wecaught up on the sleep we missed from waking up atfive to catch the train.

Once we arrived, most of us fell in love withBiarritz. It was wonderfully warm, and the beachenthralled us… or maybe that was the ice cream.People were kind, helpful and tried their best todecipher what we were attempting to tell them.We then went to Lourdes, where the Virgin Marywas sighted eighteen times. The town is overrunwith shops selling containers for holy water andother religious paraphernalia. At the Cathedral, priests, Bishops, and Cardinals processed into andout of the sanctuary. Alongside the Cathedral, thereare fountains where holy water from the Lourdesspring is funneled, and people wash themselves,

drink the water, or bottle it for later use.Carcassonne, the medieval walled city was our

next stop. Copious sweet shops and hole-in-the-wallstores lined the narrow cobblestone streets. We had agreat time in the city until rain forced us back to ourhotel. Next, we visited a 2,000 year-old Romancoliseum and a temple to the goddess Diana in thecity of Nîmes and the Point-du Gard aqueduct, which was built by the Romans in 20 AD.Everything there was simply beautiful to behold.Avignon, where the Popes were housed for over onehundred years, was next on our trip. Here, the icecream was so good that we had to go back forseconds. Of course, the Palace of the Popes wasbreathtaking, and the surrounding area had all sortsof shops to peruse if one did not feel like waiting inline. We then went to the beach city of Nice on theMediterranean Sea, where the beach is stone. Whilethere, we scooted over for a day of fun in Monaco(including seeing where Princess Grace is buried),visited a perfumery, and ate even more ice cream.

In those ten days, we saw a foreign country, learned more about a language, appreciated adifferent culture, and magically managed to eat icecream every day but did not gain a pound becauseof all the walking we did. We returned hometired, happy, and sad all at once. Little things willstick with us. For example, our tour guide alwayssaid “One two three SCHMILE” when taking ourpicture. At first, we did not know whether or nothe was serious, which just made the whole ordealfunny. It was my first experience outside of thecountry, and I had the time of my life.

12 CARDINAL MATTERS Fall 2011

“You can make a difference in one life—in a lot oflives. We live in the greatest country in the world, and a lot of problems could be solved if morepeople would reach out and serve.” This was oneof the many meaningful and inspiring commentsUSC Head Baseball Coach, Ray Tanner, shared at arecent speaking engagement for the Alpha ThetaOrganization (a non-denominational, student-ledreligious group) at Cardinal Newman.

Coach Tanner opened by telling the story aboutwhen he was a twenty-seven year old coach—one ofthe youngest coaches in Division I at the time- buthe said he “just wasn’t happy.” “My energies werenot being used in the right way. I was not serving, and I didn’t have the right purpose.” Tanner creditedhis wife, Karen, with teaching him the importance ofgiving back and for getting him on the “right path.”He said he began getting actively involved in hiscommunity, and he thought he was doing all that hecould. Once again, Karen pushed him further andsaid, “It wasn’t enough.” As a result, The RayTanner Foundation was formed in 2005.

The mission of the Foundation is to supportorganizations for seriously ill children, thehomeless and other charitablecauses. The Foundation has nooverhead, so ”every penny weraise goes back into thecommunity.” Last year alone, theFoundation raised approximately$48,000. Already this year, over$51,000 has been raised andawarded to The SC Center forFathers and Families, the FamilyShelter, Children Unlimited,Canoeing for Kids, St. Vincent dePaul Society, the CooperativeMinistries, Palmetto Health Children’s

Hospital and Palmetto Health’s Foundation Journey ofCourage Bead Program, among others. Once again, the Tanners are pushing to give more. They want tobuild a very special stadium.

Through the Foundation and the sale of arecently written book, Carolina Baseball—PressureMakes Diamonds, Coach Tanner and Karen areraising funds to build a Miracle Field, which is aflat, painted stadium that allows handicappedchildren to play the game of baseball. The book, written by David Miller and Ron Kule, tells thehistory of Carolina Baseball all the way through

the 2nd National Championship. “Winning is important, and we

have had good fortune,” Tanner said.“But the work we do through theFoundation is more rewarding. You,too, have an obligation to serve yourcommunity. Grow other people toreach out and make the communitybetter.” Coach Tanner is doing justthat.

For more information aboutThe Ray Tanner Foundation or toorder Carolina Baseball—PressureMakes Diamonds, log on totheraytanner foundation.org.

Reach Out and Serve

Other Notable Comments bythe Coach:“Love yourself, who you are and what you do.”“Be who you are and be comfortable.”“Find balance...get outside the tunnel and enjoy thejourney.”

“Together we all accomplish more.”“People make mistakes. Learn from them.”“Character—it is the single most importantcharacteristic I look for when recruiting players.”“We all have hurdles. The key is how fast you get upand leap over them.”

SCHOLARSHIPS

“Happiness is found along the way, not at theend of the road,” was a statement written byBobbi Rossi before her tragic death in 1984.Rossi’s family honors her passion for living—one that was “blazed with spirit, zeal andenergy” by awarding the Bobbi Rossi MemorialScholarship to a Cardinal Newman SchoolSenior each year. Mary Katherine Hall, daughter of Kevin and Jamie Hall, was awardedThe Class of 2012 Bobbi Rossi MemorialScholarship on September 12, 2011. Fortwenty-seven consecutive years, The RossiFoundation has awarded this scholarship to adeserving senior—one who possesses not onlythe dedication and spirit of Bobbi Rossi—butalso the desire to touch the lives of his/herclassmates and the community.

Hall is Student Body President, a member ofthe National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl Team,Key Club, Spanish Club, Pep Club, AlphaTheta, and the Catholic Commission. She alsoserves as President of the WINGS MentoringProgram, a program designed to mentor newstudents. In addition, Hall plays CN Varsityand South Carolina United Club Soccer. Shehas dedicated countless hours of communityservice to such organizations as, St. JosephCatholic Church, Home Works and Les PetiteTerpiscore (a service based high schoolsorority), just to name a few.

“Our family was thrilled to award this year’sscholarship to Mary Katherine,” said Terri Boyle(‘80), Rossi’s sister. “She is an amazing younglady! She is a positive and powerful presence atCardinal Newman and in her community.”“We are so proud of Mary Katherine,” saidJacqualine Kasprowski, Principal. “Sheembodies everything we strive to help ourstudents achieve: Academic Excellence.Spiritual Excellence. Athletic Excellence.”

Columbia was home to Rossi most of her shortlife. She attended Saint Joseph School, graduated from Cardinal Newman School in1982 and excelled her third year in nursing atthe University of South Carolina. Rossi’ssudden death in September 1984 led the Rossifamily to establish The Bobbi Rossi MemorialScholarship as a way of perpetuating herpowerful presence in the community.

Rossi embodied a harmonious balance ofcharacter, heart, faith and purpose—all ofwhich she orchestrated with vitality andintegrity. She was actively involved in studentgovernment, athletics and extracurricularorganizations while at Cardinal Newman. Uponentering college, Rossi dedicated her future tohealing others via a career in nursing andexemplified sincerity and tenderness in herendeavor. She found that in addition tomaintaining a sound emotional and spiritualself, one must also maintain a sound physicalself. She believed it was important to honor andrespect one’s body and she served as a collegephysical fitness instructor. Rossi joined theKappa Delta sorority while at USC, a groupthat fittingly hailed her the “Sunshine Girl” forbringing radiance and warmth to everyone sheencountered.

Cardinal Newman Girls’Volleyball Teams raisemoney for cancer researchBY CHRISTINA LEE KNAUSSThe Catholic Miscellany

COLUMBIA—The girls’ volleyball teams fromCardinal Newman School and Hammond Academywere definitely in the pink during a recent rivalry game.

Outfitted in rose-colored jerseys, the squads facedoff in a gymnasium awash in decorations in manyshades of pink. The colors were a tribute dubbed DigPink held to raise awareness and collect donations forbreast cancer research.

The evening honored the late Janice Duke, whodied of the disease in 2003.

Duke was the founder of the volleyball program atHammond, where she coached from 1978-1983. Shewas also the mother of Candi Watson, CardinalNewman’s assistant volleyball coach.

Watson’s husband Bob is head volleyball coach, andboth are Cardinal Newman graduates. She said her tiesto both schools made the evening especially poignant.

“It was pretty overwhelming and I was veryhumbled by how many people knew my mom, and Ican appreciate what a great influence and role modelshe was,” Watson said. “This evening was excitingbecause the kids were so excited about it, and it’simportant to do anything we can to spread awarenessabout breast cancer.”

During a moment of silent prayer, members of thecrowd who have been affected by breast cancer wereasked to stand. About half of the 250 people presentrose to their feet.

Dig Pink is part of a new program called CardinalNewman Cares, started by Jeff DiBattisto, the athleticdirector. It requires each athletic team to complete aservice project, beyond the service hours alreadyrequired for every student.

Those who play multiple sports are required totake part in a project with each team.

“Student athletes are role models in thecommunity and fortunate to have what they have, soit’s important that they give back,” DiBattisto said.

“This program is an extension of what they already do,and it shows we’re preparing them to be lifelongservice givers.”

Each team can do its own project, or the teamsfrom each sport (B-squad, junior varsity and varsity)can work together.

Dig Pink was the second Cardinal Newman Caresevent.

Earlier, the swim team spent half a day cleaningthe grounds and taking care of animals at the ColumbiaAnimal Shelter on Shop Road.

DiBattisto said the athletes have been positiveabout the newprogram so far.

Abby Rutz, 18, asenior on the varsityvolleyball team, suggested the Dig Pinkproject after hearingabout similar events atother schools.

Rutz was one offour girls who spokeabout breast cancerfacts during a programheld between thejunior varsity andvarsity games.

“I was veryemotional while I wasreading during the program, seeing a lot of people whohave family members and friends who were diagnosedwith breast cancer,” she said. “It was emotional to seehow all the people came, how everyone participatedand came together. I think we made a lot of difference.”

The teams collected $1,300 for the PalmettoRichland Cancer Foundation.

CN wishes to thank The Catholic Miscellany, The Columbia Star, The State,WACH, WLTX and WIS for their coverage.

CARDINALS CARE

Swim Team Helps theColumbia Animal ShelterOn Saturday, September 9th, the Swim Team helped out at theColumbia Animal Shelter. Activities included walking the dogs, playing with the cats/kittens in the various cat rooms, helping withthe farm animals at the “Funny Farm,” and picking up glass/debrisfrom the barnyard area.

On October 28th, the Cross Country Team visited The Waterford Retirement Community to spend time withthe residents. They decorated pumpkins for Halloween, danced a few line dances, did some face painting, and just sat, chatted and enjoyed each other's company. Everyone enjoyed his/her time, and several of thestudents plan on returning to the community for service hour opportunities in the future.

Cardinals Care is a new community service program initiated by CardinalNewman Athletics Director, Jeff DiBattisto. Every athletic team is requiredto perform a service project together to help our community. This requirementis in addition to the individual service hours already required by the School.

IT ALL STARTED AT A CARDINAL NEWMAN SCHOOL TALENTSHOW BACK IN 2008. Just before playing “Shake “ for the first time, brothers Patrick (’12) and Kelly (’10) Morris talked about forming a band.

Little did they know then, they would release their so-far unnamed first CD inthe summer of 2012. It will feature tunes that highlight their rich Latin, Soul,Blues and Rockabilly influences.

Recording their first seven songs out of a bedroom in their home, theMobros feel like making music just comes “naturally.” “We have always hadaccess to this spacious, unfinished room in our house, and that is where wemake everything happen,” said Kelly. “We usually play a couple of hourstogether and a lot of times till late night, figuring out what songs to put on ourset-list for upcoming show’s and writing new material.”

The Mobros tout the creative genius of local musicians, and say they provide inspiration for their music.“There are a surprising number of amazing musicians at The Camden and Columbia Fine Arts Centers and TheCamden Blues Festival,” noted Patrick. Billy Shepard is one of those musicians. Shepard is a member of TheUpton Trio and has been the choir director at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Camden. The Mobrosgrew up listening to Shepard’s classical, gospel, and jazz performances in church. They claim Shepard inspiredthem in so many ways. They have even joined him and played, realizing that each experience added depth totheir own music and showmanship. The Mobros’ music has also been influenced by The Gipsy Kings, BuenaVista Social Club, Al Green, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Ray Charles,Django and” thousands upon thousands more.”

The Mobros’ talent doesn’t end with music; they are designing the cover of their CD as well. They creditCamden photographer, Robbie Wright, for his work on the project. They want the cover to reflect their style, sound and background. Despite a recent offer to perform and record with Spartanburg's Marshall Tucker Band, they also plan to launch their first CD without the help of a record label or management company.

If you want to learn “mo,” check out their facebook and Youtube pages, or visit their websitewww.mobros.net. Scan the code below with your Smartphone to hear a tune or catch the Mobros live onJanuary 20 at The Five Points Pub.

Kelly Morris is a Music Major at TheUniversity of South Carolina and Patrick is asenior at CN.

ALUMNUS RELEASES BOOK ON DECEMBER 15Chuck Walsh (‘77) is releasing his book, A Month of Tomorrows on December 15. It will be available inbookstores, and on Amazon.com and barnes&noble.com for both ebook and hard copy purchases.

Here’s a brief synopsis:WWII hero Samuel Gable has weeks to live. Eighty-six years old, his body ravaged by cancer, he’s full of unrest for reasons thathave nothing to do with the horrid disease. He has secrets to divulge, and local writer Pete Swift agrees to document what heassumes are a few tales of war. As Samuel recalls perilous days spent in the jungles of the South Pacific, however, Pete begins to livevicariously through Samuel’s stories. A kinship grows as the saga moves from the deadly battlefield to one of the great love storiesof all time, as Samuel recalls his love affair with Callie, the dark-haired beauty he fell in love with in the Blue Ridge Mountains ofTennessee before being shipped off to war. As Samuel's final days unfold, it is Pete who ultimately brings Samuel the internal resthe's been seeking. In doing so, Pete comes to realize that Samuel likewise brings to a close the internal unrest that had grown deepwithin Pete.
