1 From the Pastor’s Desk: Dear people, Some of you were an active part of an on-going conversation that began back in January. We called the sessions "Making a Good Church Better" - - - and together we learned, listened and labored toward finding words around this amazing calling to which we have been called. One of the questions asked was "What do we do?" And the answer we gave to this question is We connect people to God and support one another through Jesus' message of love, discipleship, and transformation So how does this happen? Certainly in steps, careful marching steps moving forward as the "twenty mile marches" we explored during our time together. Some of those steps are familiar, only becoming bigger and better. An example is the Back2School Bash. Some of these steps are new, including tasking a group of people to hold us accountable to moving forward. If we are to be a part of the transformation of the world, the ushers of Christ's kingdom here on earth, then we are called to something so magnificent that it is beyond our words to describe. But words we will use to call us more and more to action, both personally and as the body of Christ. We are the connection for others to come into a committed relationship to Jesus Christ. We are the conduit by which this will happen for some in our community whose hearts God is already preparing for their own personal next steps into discipleship. From the Pastor’s Desk: Dear people, Some of you were an active part of an on-going conversation that began back in January. We called the sessions "Making a Good Church Better" - - - and together we learned, listened and labored toward finding words around this amazing calling to which we have been called. One of the questions asked was "What do we do?" And the answer we gave to this question is We connect people to God

and support one another

through Jesus' message of

love, discipleship, and transformation

So how does this happen?

This week I would like to share a very interesting article on youth drug and alcohol abuse in the US. Young people are involved in drug and alcohol use at an alarming rate. Often youth that struggle with these issues go unnoticed. I have included half of the article and the rest can be found at Youthworker.com. I would love to know what you think [email protected] .

Fall 2013

I am completing our planning for the 2012-2013 school year. We will have our fall parent meeting on Sun-day, September 1st after the late service. I am asking parents of youth to attend.

Youth News

New Center to Study Causes of Teen Substance Abuse

Despite decades of prevention efforts, adolescents continue to drink and use drugs at alarming rates, often with deadly results. Nearly half of U.S. students have used an illicit drug by 12th grade, and each year alcohol-related incidents kill about 5,000 young people and send nearly 200,000 to the emergency room, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Duke University's Center for Child and Family Policy hopes to demystify this problem with the aid of a five-year, $6.7 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The grant will fund the new Center for the Study of Adolescent Risk and Resilience (C-StARR), which will focus on the biolo-gy and behavior behind teen drinking and drug use.

Rick Hoyle, professor of psychology and neuroscience and an associate director of the Center for Child and Family Policy, will lead the effort. "Marijuana and alcohol use are not going down, so clearly we need new data on what causes people to use," Hoyle said. "That will give us clues on how to intervene in ways that encourage them not to use." http://www.youthworker.com/youth-ministry-resources-ideas/youth-culture-news/11694510/

WONDERFUL WEDNESDAYS RETURNS!

Wonderful Wednesdays begin on Wednesday, September 4th. All children aged 3(by August 31,2013) - 6th grade are invited to come to BLAST(Being Disciples, Loving God's Children, Acknowledging our Lord, Sharing the Word, Telling Others) from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. We have games, crafts, mission activities, singing, and a lesson based on the previous Sunday School lesson. Hand bells (known as the Ding a lings) begin September 25th at 6:10 p.m. for 1st-6th graders.

STUDENT PRAYER PARTNER OPPORTUNITY

It is our tradition to place the names of the children/youth on the chancel rail at the beginning of each school year. We will do that this year on Sunday, August 25th at both ser-vices. This year we are adding college students to our list. During the closing hymn that morning, you can come up and get a card. The name on your list will be your prayer part-ner for the school year. Please feel free to make contact with that person to let them know you are praying for them.

Pink cards will have the names of youth/college students and yellow cards will have the name of children.

PROMOTION SUNDAY

The children will be participating in Pro-motion Sunday from 9:45-10:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 25th in the Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will be served from 9:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and then certifi-cates and awards will be presented at 10:00 a.m. Children should report to their current Sunday School classrooms at 9:15 a.m. that morning. The congregation is invited to join the children and their families for this spe-cial event. If anyone can bring refresh-ments for this, please contact Christy Earl.

Congratulations to 3rd graders Alyssa Ingram, Destiny Braden, and Kate Scrip who will receive their bibles from the church on August 25th.

SAFE SANCTUARIES MEETING

All parents of children/youth, workers with children/youth, church leaders, and other congrega-tion members are strongly encour-aged to attend a meeting after the 10:30 service on Sunday, August 25th in the McDonough Fellowship classroom.

We will discuss our updated safe sanctuary policies.

ATTENTION KROGER SHOPPERS…. Now, you can earn money for the church just by shopping at Kroger. How, you ask? Simple, buy a Kroger card from Becky Lovelace. They are $5 and there is already $5 loaded on the card. All you have to do is recharge the card before you shop. Your gift card can be used for anything, including fuel and prescriptions, in Kroger stores with the exception of services. Services include: Money Orders, Western Union, Lottery Tickets, Hunting/Fishing Li-cense and Ticket Master. You cannot buy Kroger gift cards with a gift card.

A card purchased in a store CANNOT be linked to your organization. We earn 4% on monies reloaded to the card and we have made $893.65 through June. Thank you to our Andrew Price Kroger Shoppers!! Becky can be reached at [email protected] or 615-681-3663 or just send a check for $5 to her at 108 Rolling Mill Rd. Old Hickory, TN 37138 with your address and she will mail the card back to you. .

From Page 1 As this fall draws nearer look at your life for where God is leading. If your discipleship is an area where God expects you to be more intentional then check out ways to develop that discipleship muscle through ministry, mission and study here. Need ideas? Check out the fall listings for classes, get involved in a Sunday School group if you don't already have one, and offer your time and energy for one or more of the projects you read about here or in the bulletin. And get ready. God is working already, preparing the way for us to be the disciples we are called to be to "...connect people to God and support one another through Jesus' message of love, discipleship, and transfor-mation." Yay!!! Shalom, +Melisa

Men’s Club Meeting Set

HELP WANTED: Habitat for Humanity Faith Built 2013

Andrew Price has been invited again this year to participate in the Methodist Faith Build for Habitat for Hu-manity. The build will begin in late September; we have been scheduled for the October 6th workday. The day will begin at 7:30 and conclude by 3PM. At least seven more volunteers are needed to form our team. All volunteers must sign a waiver. Our work will include helping complete the outside structure of the house such as sid-ing, gutters, etc. Ladder work will be required for some tasks. If you are unable to par-ticipate in the building activities, you may help by bringing breakfast, snacks or bottled water for approximately 35 people. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact this year’s coordinator, Dawn Dale, at 616-804-7835 or [email protected]. Special thanks to those who have already signed up! Martin, Chuck, Buck and Tiffany!

52 Prayers

God who created us beings of heart and soul and mind, we remember again those who seek to expand their minds and gain knowledge for living and those who teach and help them learn. We pray for the students, teachers and staffs of the public schools in our area, praying for Hickman, Pennington and McGavock Elementary schools, Donelson Middle School, McGavock High School, Tennessee School for the Blind and the Law Enforcement Training Academy. We pray also for Donelson Christian Academy and Holy Rosary Academy.

Since schools, teachers and students need all the help they can find, we pray, “HELP THEM! HELP THEM! HELP THEM!” Amen.
