Thank you Donald Booze, for taking care of the
FUMC building maintenance for so many years.
You selflessly do so many things around the buildings and grounds to keep FUMC functioning and operational. Your time, dedication and expertise does not go unnoticed. We all greatly appreciate your efforts. The stellar condition of the FUMC property and facilities are a testament of your hard work and tireless giving.
Most recently, your efforts were integral in securing the Calvin Austin property for FUMC. A work that will benefit this church and its members for years to come.
You are a blessing to FUMC and our hope is that you know how much you are appreciated.

How Will We Respond?
A Message from our District Superintendent
What will the discernment of the 864 elected delegates, gathered from around the globe, be during the February 23-26 called General Conference?
How will we as disciples of Jesus, members of the United Methodist Church, clergy and lay leaders in local congregations respond to the actions of the called General Conference?
In January I:
Worshipped with Parrish Chapel UMC and Cave Spring UMC
Conducted one called Charge Conference
Held annual consultations with 31 district clergy
Participated in the Bishop’s Way Forward Work Group meeting
Participated in the January Cabinet Meeting
Attended the Messy Church presentation to the SEJ Leadership Conference
Participated in District Committee on Ordained Ministry which focused on annual interviews with li-censed pastors
Attended the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry meeting which interviewed candidates for ordina-tion; participated in the BOM Advisory Committee meeting
Consulted with laity and clergy in person, by phone, and through email
I don’t yet know the answers.
As I worshiped with the Board of Ordained Ministry in the chapel at Roslyn Retreat Center in Richmond (pictured here) and saw the awe-inspiring reflection of the beautiful sanctuary ceiling through the window glass into the surrounding darkness, I was reminded of Paul’s words to the church in Corinth:
Now we see a reflection in a mirror; then we will see face-to-face. Now
I know partially, but then I will know completely in the same way that I
have been completely known. (1 Corinthians 13:12 CEB)
There is much we don’t know. There is much work ahead of us once the Called General Conference of 2019 completes its work on February 26. No matter the actions taken there we will be called to live out our disci-pleship daily in a world broken by sin and hurt, disease and disillusionment, poverty and pride, hate and envy. Will we reflect Christ’s light into the darkness?
With hope and peace,
Kathleen

Celebrate UMW's 150 Years taken from District Newsletter
United Methodist Women (UMW): Faith-Hope-Love In Action
UMW began in 1869 when 8 women in Boston decided to learn about women’s health and education needs in India from missionary wives traveling in India. They raised $300 to send two women—one, a missionary and one, a female doctor—to India. UMW now has over 800,000 members throughout the World, raised 20 million dollars last year to fund and assist in missions designed to spread the word of God and assist women, children and youth in over 100 countries, hundreds of missions in the US and local missions in Roanoke such as Kids Soar and Alta Mons and other parts of VA, such as The Wesley Center in Portsmouth and Henry Fork in Rocky Mount. March 23 is our 150 Birthday. Please acknowledge this in some way in your units/churches. Celebrate Missions!
District UMW Spiritual Life Retreat, will be Saturday, April 13 at Crockett Springs UMC and Alta Mons. Save the date!

March Worship Schedule
Journey with John’s Gospel
In March, we are entering into a significant Christian season of Lent. We are
invited to participate in Jesus’ life and ministry in Kairos/divine time. This year we
are going to journey with Jesus in John’s gospel. John’s gospel describes individu-
als’ encountering Jesus, growing in him, and remaining in him. Faith is a journey
with Jesus: Come and See – Choose to Believe or not to Believe – Remain and Grow
in Jesus.
Looking back to our faith journey, we had someone who introduced Jesus to us or invited us to him.
We responded to their invitation, came to Jesus, and have grown in him by worship, prayers, Bible Studies,
small groups, caring, fellowship, and service to the church and the world. During Lent, I hope that we will
grow in faith through the gospel of John. I would like to invite you to open your hearts to divine time and
be a part of the individual stories in the fourth gospel.
Let’s follow Jesus as Nicodemus, Lazarus, Mary, Martha, a Samaritan woman, Peter, or a crowd in
the divine time of kairos. We can be Nicodemus who wants to know Jesus more, but is afraid to
acknowledge Jesus as savior publicly. We can be Lazarus who experiences life while walking through a dark
valley of death. We may thirst living water badly like a Samaritan woman. It may be we who denies Jesus
in daily lives out of fear and later repent bitterly. We can be a witness to follow Jesus to the cross and
watch Jesus’ suffering there.
Faith is a journey. Faith should grow until we get to perfect love to give all for the glory of God.
Faith should grow until we love God with all our hearts, minds, and souls and love our neighbors as our-
selves without judgment. During lent, I pray that we grow together in faith when we make a journey with
John’s gospel. May the Lord bless our Lenten journey so that we can encounter the living Jesus and grow in
faith and love.
